SOME TALK OF ALEXANDERROGER GRINSTEADTo LeahCHAPTER Ihad become such a common sight, such a part of the English rural scene, that the villagers merely gave a brief glancedown the long, steep hill and then went on with their business.Perhaps a few girls with memories thrilled, or a lonely wifesighed, but only in secret. In peaceful days, perhaps, all thesepeople had glanced in the same way at charabancs, a herd ofcows, or cyclists. It drizzled. The distant murmur grew distinctive, then definable as faintvoices raised in song . . . Singing hi, hi, yippy, ippy hi. .,5SSubdued rumbles became footsteps of marching men, dull, dragging . . . left, right. . . left, right, . . .On they came, slowly, painfully, but ever on. Now the firstsolid moving yellowish block had spaces in it, atoms, humanforms, tiny at first until steel helmets could be clearly distinguished as the haze of steam which drifted above clearedSoon it was seen that these human forms were tall and welldrilled and, in spite of the loads they bore and their fatigue, carried themselves with the grace of mannequins.Left, right left, right. In the further distance there were more blocks about to assumehuman shape, and further still mere smudges, diminishing into apoint as fine as a needle down the long, steep hillShell be wearin silk pyjamas when she comes ...In spite of individual voices that croaked like tired frogs, somehow, all together, they contrived to blend into a kind of harmony.Suddenly the singing ceased, leaving only the beat of hobnailed boots.Martin Roule perspired gently. His battledress collar, stickyand rough, filed away at a pimple, a recent and painful acquisition Curiously enough, it was not at all warm. Indeed, thesun, elusive always in December, had become such a rarity thatvarious Piggery9 intellectuals had begun to doubt its existence. To speak plainly, it was a cold, drizzling day.Sergeant Catcham, dripping and weary, but still conscious of aload of responsibility felt only by those fortunate or cunningenough to have acquired three stripes, once again rallied hisplatoon with an originality unsurpassed by any but a sergeant inthe Brigade of Guards.Left, right left, right.Gelda, with all the obstinacy of a Liverpool man, continued todo it the Liverpool way.Your army left, GeldaThe sergeant, who had been limping behind unobserved, wasnow transformed suddenly into six feet of highly critical andferocious brawn. A man out of step jarred upon him as a discorddistresses a musician. It outraged his tidy, disciplined instinct. Why do you think Im calling the time out for you? Want meto burst a lung or something?Muttering darkly that he wanted him to burst something muchless internal than a lung, Gelda shuffled into step. If Martinshonest sweat flowed gently, his own, quite as honest, gushed intorrents.Only warm, like5 he breathed, in accents which recalleddockyards and the masts of ships. Some life this is. Every timethe old tabs hit the deck they feels Hke roasted spuds bursting outof my boots.

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, http://www.uni-jena.de/ (Institut für Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: Seminar Point of View, 13 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: “Coppard wrote a handful of the best short stories of the English language and [...] contributed significantly to the movement of the short story from being a truncated novel to acquiring its own form”. (Frank Edmund Smith) Alfred Edgar Coppard’s short stories surely have proven worth a closer examination, and that is why I undertake to delve into one his late works, Some Talk of Alexander, written in 1937. The focus of my work is on the story’s perception, namely on its focalization in general and on the means used to present the main character the way the reader may perceive him.

Alexander the Great of Macedon was no stranger to controversy in his own time. Conqueror of the Greek states, of Egypt and of the Persian Empire as well as many of the principalities of the Indus Valley, he nevertheless became revered as well as vilified. Was he simply a destroyer of the ancient civilizations and religions of these regions, or was he a hero of the Persian dynasties and of Islam? The conflicting views that were taken of him in the Middle East in his own time and the centuries that followed are still reflected in the tensions that exist between east and west today. The story of Alexander became the subject of legend in the medieval west, but was perhaps even more pervasive in the east. The Alexander Romance was translated into Syriac in the sixth century and may have become current in Persia as early as the third century AD. From these beginnings it reached into the Persian national epic, the Shahnameh, into Jewish traditions, and into the Quran and subsequent Arab romance. The papers in this volume all have the aim of deepening our understanding of this complex development. If we can understand better why Alexander is such an important figure in both east and west, we shall be a little closer to understanding what unites two often antipathetic worlds. This volume collects the papers delivered at the conference of the same title held at the University of Exeter from July 26-29 2010. More than half the papers were by invited speakers and were designed to provide a systematic view of the subject; the remainder were selected for their ability to carry research forward in an integrated way.

Persians written by Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones and has been published by Hachette UK this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-12 with History categories.

A stunning portrait of the magnificent splendor and enduring legacy of ancient Persia The Achaemenid Persian kings ruled over the largest empire of antiquity, stretching from Libya to the steppes of Asia and from Ethiopia to Pakistan. From the palace-city of Persepolis, Cyrus the Great, Darius, Xerxes, and their heirs reigned supreme for centuries until the conquests of Alexander of Macedon brought the empire to a swift and unexpected end in the late 330s BCE. In Persians, historian Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones tells the epic story of this dynasty and the world it ruled. Drawing on Iranian inscriptions, cuneiform tablets, art, and archaeology, he shows how the Achaemenid Persian Empire was the world’s first superpower—one built, despite its imperial ambition, on cooperation and tolerance. This is the definitive history of the Achaemenid dynasty and its legacies in modern-day Iran, a book that completely reshapes our understanding of the ancient world.
