“We have passed through the eye of the needle!” my father was fond of saying. And indeed we had. Now, after four years and four months of German occupation, we had survived. Neither morality nor faith had anything to do with our survival but survive we did. Money, sex and luck all had a hand in it. Germany, the most powerful nation in Europe, had decreed that all Jews were to be exterminated, not only the adults but especially the children. Once the children had been murdered, the “Jewish Question” would have been resolved once and for all. The Allied armies had finally swept through Belgium and liberated us after we had spent twenty-seven months in hiding. Our parents, Hilaire and Frieda Rosenberg went about trying to resume some semblance of family life; my sister Ruth and I would be going back to school after nearly three years of interrupted studies. It would take years for me to fathom the enormity of what we had been through, to understand why we did survive. Our parents were gamblers and people they knew through the Casinos hid us. Hilaire made large amounts of money in black-market dealings with the Germans so we could pay for the cupidity of those who would hide us. Frieda had an affair with an SS officer who warned us when we had to go into hiding. After attending the 1991 Conference of Hidden Children in New York City I knew that this unusual story of survival had to be written. Thus began a journey to a second liberation, an understanding that although they had been less than perfect parents, Hilaire and Frieda did all they humanly could do to ensure the survival of this nucleus of our family.

From a bluff overlooking Mobile Bay, Caroline Colson reflects on a troubling and disturbing summer, filled with rumors of war. Although threats and rumors about the Yankees and secession from the Union continue to plague her village, Caroline still believes she lives too far south to be touched by war. Unfortunately, she could not be more wrong. When their young son dies in a tragic accident, Carolines husband, Cameron, is lost within the darkness of overwhelming grief and blames a young slave named Edmund for the death. The boy is sent away from the house and from his mother, Bertha, a household slave, after the accident. The boy soon goes missing, which sends Bertha down a heartbreaking path to search for him, examine her life, and question her self-worth. Meanwhile, Caroline is left to battle her own grief and deal with Cameron, who has transformed into an angry, bitter man. As war begins, Cameron, a respected maritime lawyer and patriot, boards the CSS Alabama where his fate awaits. Too Far South tells the story of a Southern Alabama familys determination to survive the Civil War despite the blockade of Mobile Bay. The anxiety and apprehension of an invasion by the Federal fleet to encounter Confederate Forces in a battle for Mobile Bay, affected all.

In the bestselling tradition of Frank Delaney, Colleen McCullough, and Maeve Binchy comes a poignant historical family saga set against the Famine. In a hidden Ireland where fishermen and tenant farmers find solace in their ancient faith, songs, stories, and communal celebrations, young Honora Keeley and Michael Kelly wed and start a family. Because they and their countrymen must sell both their catch and their crops to pay exorbitant rents, potatoes have become their only staple food. But when blight destroys the potatoes three times in four years, a callous government and uncaring landlords turn a natural disaster into The Great Starvation that will kill one million. Honora and Michael vow their children will live. The family joins two million other Irish refugees--victims saving themselves--in the emigration from Ireland. Danger and hardship await them in America. Honora, her unconventional sister Mv°ire, and their seven sons help transform Chicago from a frontier town to the "City of the Century." The boys go on to fight in the Civil War and enlist in the cause of Ireland's freedom. Spanning six generations and filled with joy, sadness, and heroism, Galway Bay sheds brilliant light on the ancestors of today's forty-four million Irish Americans--and is a universal story you will never forget.

The exploration and settling of the Western frontier, the inflammatory but inspiring events of the Civil War, and the tragedy, drama, and victorious effort exemplified in World War II are the three focal points of this anthology. Several stories are loosely based on actual happenings: Home So Far Away, Amerikaner, and Lost. Each story in varying ways focuses on and portrays the resiliency of the human spirit when individuals are confronted with life-threatening situations. It is our hope as readers that we can discover within ourselves traits that would inspire us to act heroically if thrust into similar circumstances. This focus is found in all stories but predominantly in the cornerstone title Out of the Darkness, a two-part WWII narrative whose main character, Niko, sets an example for us all. The reader should know that every main protagonist in each story is based on real human beings that the author has interviewed and come to know as friends and subsequently deduced that these persons could in all likelihood do what their fictional characters achieved.
