It is one of Josef Joachim’s great merits, not only to have introduced the following sonatas of Johann Sebastian Bach into the Concert-Hall, but also to have made them loved by the great public. They were almost unknown before Joachim played them with his grand art of interpretation, and brought out all the beauties of this magnificent music. Some parts of these sonatas had been played in public by certain violinists before Joachim’s time, but as the spirit and the technique of these works were quite strange to the performers, the interpretation made a ridiculous impression on the audience. Any success was made quite impossible on account of the want of knowledge in the performers. Then came Joachim and his rendering was a revelation. How be played, and interpreted these sonatas is so well-known, that it is not necessary to mention it. When I completed my studies at the Berliner Hochschule under Joachim’s direction, the study of these sonatas formed one of the most important parts of his teaching. Joachim used the very excellent edition by Ferdinand David, based on Bach’s manuscript, to be found in the Royal Library in Berlin. All the same Joachim changed a great deal in this edition, with regard to the manner of playing, bowing, fingering and marks of interpretation, and I kept to all the alterations made by him. I very often had the opportunity of hearing Joachim play these works at concerts as well as during his classes, and so I was able to observe the fineness of his interpretation down to the smallest detail. As I am publishing the standard works of violin literature in connection with my own teaching, it was a special pleasure to me to revise these Sonatas — which I consider one of the most important works written for the violin — in such a manner, that no doubt may be left as to the best and easiest way of mastering the great and unusual difficulties which they contain. I hope to show by this to all young violin-artists, to whom the study of the following sonatas cannot be too strongly recommended — a sure way to a really perfect and beautiful rendering of the same.

The work for Solo Violin BWV 1001-1006 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) originally titled (Sei Solo - a violino senza basso accompagnato), was published long after his death in 1802 by Nikolaus Simrock in Bonn (Germany), however, fortunately the sources that are preserved today are those of the autograph manuscript itself and in good condition. Even though the work is well written, there are texts and annotations in which it is uncertain to know exactly where they begin or end. Though, to clarify this, other handwritten copies have been used, but when deriving directly or indirectly from the original autograph, the comparison is not relevant to correct errors and discrepancies. This version tries to transmit in a close or faithful way the intention of the composer for the benefit of the performer, since The Six Sonatas and Partitas reflect Bach's ability as a performer and composer. Only someone involved with the violin as a performer could know its possibilities and limitations so well, they demonstrate a level of technical and musical mastery that previous composers had not approached and they remain one of the peaks of violin literature. Musical spelling errors and rhythmic inaccuracies have been corrected, also, some annotations or solutions in brackets have been added, considered by the editor.La obra para Violín Solo BWV 1001-1006 de Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) titulada originalmente (Sei Solo - a violino senza basso accompagnato), fue publicada mucho después de su muerte en 1802 por Nikolaus Simrock en Bonn (Alemania), sin embargo, por fortuna las fuentes que se conservan en la actualidad son las del propio manuscrito autógrafo y en buen estado, se encuentra archivada en la Biblioteca Estatal de Berlín (Mus. Sra. Bach P 967). A pesar que la obra está bien escrita, existen textos y anotaciones en que es incierto saber con exactitud dónde comienzan o terminan. No obstante, para esclarecer esto, se han recurrido a otras copias manuscritas, pero al derivar directa o indirectamente del autógrafo original carece de relevancia la comparación para corregir errores y discrepancias. Esta versión trata de transmitir de manera cercana o fiel la intención del compositor para beneficio del ejecutante, pues Las Seis Sonatas y Partitas reflejan la habilidad de Bach como intérprete y compositor. Sólo alguien involucrado con el violín como intérprete podría conocer tan bien sus posibilidades y limitaciones, demuestran un nivel de maestría técnica y musical al que no se habían acercado los compositores anteriores y, de hecho, siguen siendo una de las cumbres de la literatura del violín. Se han corregido errores ortográficos musicales e inexactitudes rítmicas, además, se agregaron algunas anotaciones o soluciones entre corchetes consideradas por el editor.

Sra. Bach P 967). The urtext version presented for Viola was only adapted, edited, and transcribed by Roisber Narvaez. Transposing in an interval of a perfect 5th descended was essential for the adaptation of the viola, for that reason, C-clef prevail the most part of the time as possible to facilitate the study and reading of the player, except those acute sections where it needs to use the G-clef. This printed version tries to capture and reproduce the original intention of the Baroque composer as faithfully as possible and without adding or changing the musical content, however, some spelling and rhythmic errors have been corrected throughout the work to facilitate the interpretation of the viola player. Some suggestions by the editor have been placed in square brackets.La obra para Violín Solo BWV 1001-1006 de Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) titulada originalmente (Sei Solo - a violino senza basso accompagnato), fue publicada mucho después de su muerte en 1802 por Nikolaus Simrock en Bonn (Alemania), por fortuna, las fuentes que se conservan en la actualidad son las del propio manuscrito autógrafo y en buen estado, se encuentra archivada en la Biblioteca Estatal de Berlín (Mus. Sra. Bach P 967). La versión urtext presentada para Viola solo fue adaptada, editada y transcrita por Roisber Narvaez. Transportar en un intervalo de 5ta justa hacia abajo fue indispensable para la adaptación a la viola, por tal motivo, la clave de do prevalece la mayor parte del tiempo como sea posible para facilitar el estudio y lectura del ejecutante, salvo aquellas secciones agudas donde es preciso utilizar la clave de sol. Esta versión impresa intenta capturar y reproducir la intención original del compositor barroco lo más fiel que sea posible y sin añadir o cambiar el contenido musical, sin embargo, se han corregido algunos errores ortográficos y rítmicos a lo largo de la obra para facilitar la interpretación al ejecutante de viola. Se han colocado entre corchetes algunas sugerencias por el editor.
