Cet ouvrage traite de l’éducation des enfants atteints de handicaps physiques : sourds et déficients auditifs, aveugles et amblyopes, infirmes moteurs. Chacune de ces formes fait l’objet d’un chapitre qui expose les problèmes et l’essentiel des techniques développées par les pédagogies spécialisées. Pour les enfants sourds de naissance le problème principal est l’accès à la langue, aux connaissances dont elle est la clef, à la communication avec l’entourage. Cette dernière est assurée par la méthode orale (démutisation, lecture sur les lèvres) dont les difficultés sont analysées. Les techniques d’amplification auditive facilitent ces apprentissages ; elles sont particulièrement utiles aux enfants atteints de déficits partiels. L’enseignement des aveugles comporte l’apprentissage de moyens qui permettent lecture et écriture et surtout la transmission de connaissances et de savoir-faire normalement assurés par la vue. Pour les infirmes moteurs, l’enseignement est subordonné à la fréquentation de l’école pour laquelle diverses solutions ont été proposées. Deux chapitres traitent des problèmes généraux que soulèvent l’existence des handicaps et l’éducation spécialisée : spécificité des handicaps physiques, définition des buts généraux de l’éducation, adaptation de ces buts à la gravité et à la date d’apparition du handicap. La grave question de la ségrégation des enfants handicapés par l’éducation en établissements spécialisés est discutée, de même que les moyens proposés pour y remédier. L’importance de l’éducation précoce, les moyens qui permettent de la réaliser, la collaboration avec les parents, la formation des maîtres sont également traités, de même que la place à donner, d’une façon générale, à l’information et l’éducation du public qui conditionnent l’intégration de l’individu handicapé dans la société.
