While there is no doubt that an abundance of newly enacted education policies abounds across the state and across the nation, more fundamental questions remain. What is the nature of these reforms? What do they hope to accomplish? How successful have they been? In this book, we attempt to provide some answers to these questions by examining a major set of education policy reforms undertaken in Michigan and across the country over the past 20 or more years. These innovations include finance reform, state assessment of student performance, a series of school accountability measures, charter schools, schools of choice, and, for Detroit, a bevy of oft-conflicting policies and reform efforts that have belabored but seldom helped its public schools. In the pages that follow, we examine the decidedly mixed outcomes and effects of this large array of reform policies and programs. Each chapter addresses a specific policy area, outlining reform activity across the nation with an emphasis on Michigan's efforts as well as on one or two states that led these changes.

This highly acclaimed volume in the Defending Public Schools series is now available in paperback from Teachers College Press. It is a practical, necessary addition to the work of administrators, teachers, policymakers, and parents as they negotiate the difficult path of how to best teach and educate today’s children and youth. Educational standards and assessment practices are the engine driving the historic changes public schools are experiencing today. This book provides readers with the foundation for a more holistic understanding of the nature and limits of standards-based educational reforms and, in particular, the ways in which current assessment practices influence the experiences of students, teachers, administrators, and parents. This dynamic collection of essays presents an overview of the origins and development of standards-based educational reform and assessment, a description of the standards-based educational reform (SBER) movement’s essential elements, and a critical analysis of the means and ends of what is perhaps the most important reform effort U.S. schools have ever experienced.

Comprehensive Regional Reform written by Guihua Liu and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-09-25 with Education categories.

This book ambitiously presents the current directions and goals of the Chinese idea of modernization in education. Searching for a neutral way to understand educational reform and policy-making in the midst of many different theories in the field, the authors combine the theories of ecology, regional studies, and educational philosophy to focus on the hot topics relating to the current problems in Chinese education. In addition to the theory of education, it offers an interdisciplinary approach to educational policy and administration, including perspectives from history, evaluation and (big) data processing, modernization, planning-making, curriculum and teaching, element analysis etc. within or beyond the limits of education. This book is a valuable resource for policy-makers and administrators as well as teachers and students majoring in education or related fields. It is also beneficial to those interested in interdisciplinary approaches to educational theory studies and regional studies in education, and practitioners in schools and higher education institutes as well as anyone wanting insights into Chinese education from the perspective of regional studies.

The Uses Of Culture written by Cameron McCarthy and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-10 with Education categories.

The Uses of Culture, a collection of nine of Cameron McCarthy's most provocative essays, explores the issues of race, educational reform and cultural politics. This volume looks at the limitations of the cultural exceptionalism which underwrite current curriculum projects such as Afrocentrism, Multiculturalism and Eurocentrism. Drawing upon a variety of literatures as well as popular culture, McCarthy contends that any single ruling identity at the core of a curriculum will be restricting. He offers as a solution a curriculum reform based on the complex, cultural linkages and associations that exist among all human groups, which acknowledge their many sources of knowledge.
