The demand for communication networks has increased dramatically in the last few years, creating a need for an intermediate network that operates over a metropolitan area at comparatively high data rates with simple protocols. With some characteristics of local area networks and wide area networks, the metropolitan area network (MAN) technology reflects the best features of both. The motivations for MAN technology include o interconnection of LANs o high-speed services o integrated services. MANs can be used in the following areas: LAN interconnection Filetransfer Distributed processing Remote services Remote login Metropolitan Area Networks provides an introduction to the key concepts of MANs in an easily understood style. Organized into five chapters, this unique book acts as an excellent reference for a beginner as well as for the veteran in the field. Topics include: Introductory and background information about MANs Interworking devices, MAN topologies, and key issues Various popular protocols proposed for MANs Modeling and performance analysis of common MAN topologies Emerging MAN-related technologies such as BISDN, ATM networks, frame relay, cell relay, SONET, and SMDS For a broad understanding of this expanding subject, Metropolitan Area Networks serves as the singular standard in the field.

The hottest issue in telecom today is how to solve the Metro Area bandwidth bottleneck--with SONET being the solution tha appeals to most telecom companies. But to compete against Ethernet, SONET will need plenty of fine-tuning. This book will help service providers compare their options and fully understand what is really necessary to give current SONET installations "next generation" capabilities. * Shows how to achieve new-generation features with enhanced SONET and other optical architectures * Compares SONET's features and services with rival Ethernet-based offerings * Offers design approaches and business models for real-world deployments * Covers GMPLS generalized MPLS), a red-hot switching technology for wavelength services In 2001 the telecom industry spent money on solving the Metro Area bandwidth bottleneck. SONET appeals to the telcos because it is widely deployed, reliable, robust, and scalable. But it will need multiple changes and enhancements to compete against the emerging rivil--Ethernet.

Metropolitan Area WDM Networks: An AWG Based Approach provides a comprehensive and technically detailed overview of the latest metropolitan area WDM network experimental systems, architectures, and access protocols. Its main focus is on the novel star WDM networks based on a wavelength-selective Arrayed-Waveguide Grating (AWG). Network researchers, engineers, professionals, and graduate students will benefit from the thorough overview and gain an in-depth understanding of current and next-generation metro WDM networks. The AWG based metro star WDM network is discussed at length and extensively investigated by means of stochastic analyses and simulations. The book provides: *an up-to-date overview of ring and star metro WDM networks and access protocols, *in-depth performance comparison studies of AWG based multihop vs. single-hop WDM networks and AWG vs. Passive Star Coupler based single-hop WDM networks, *a thorough description of the AWG based network and node architectures and access protocols, *a novel highly-efficient approach to provide survivability for star WDM networks, *extensive analytical results for both unicast and multicast variable-size packet traffic and bandwidth on demand, *supplementary simulation results, including packet header trace files.

Gigabit Ethernet has been deployed in the metro space, providing low cost, easily managed bandwidth for intensive applications like video, storage, and ASPs. 10 Gigabit Ethernet (IEEE 802.3a) will make the use of Ethernet in the Metro area even more attractive. IDC projects that GigE revenues in the U.S., marked at $155 million in 2001, will grow at 36.7% per year over the next five years, to $741 million in 2006.

Qos Based Wavelength Routing In Multi Service Wdm Networks written by Admela Jukan and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Computers categories.

The need to establish wavelength-routed connections in a service-differentiated fash ion is becoming increasingly important due to a variety of candidate client networks (e. g. IP, SDH/SONET, ATM) and the requirements for Quality-of-Service (QoS) de livery within transport layers. Up until now, the criteria for optical network design and operation have usually been considered independently of the higher-layer client signals (users), i. e. without taking into account particular requirements or constraints originating from the users' differentiation. Wavelength routing for multi-service net works with performance guarantees, however, will have to do with much more than finding a path and allocating wavelengths. The optimisation of wavelength-routed paths will have to take into account a number of user requirements and network con straints, while keeping the resource utilisation and blocking probability as low as pos sible. In a networking scenario where a multi-service operation in WDM networks is assumed, while dealing with heterogeneous architectures (e. g. technology-driven, as transparent, or regenerative), efficient algorithms and protocols for QoS-differentiated and dynamic allocation of physical resources will playa key role. This work examines the development of multi-criteria wavelength routing for WDM networks where a set of performances is guaranteed to each client network, taking into account network properties and physical constraints.
