Los Sonetos a Orfeo, "escritos como cenotafio" para la bailarina Wera Ouckama Knoop, constan de una serie de 55 poemas dividida en dos partes. La primera parte abre y cierra con dos sonetos que evocan directamente a los libros X y XI de las Metamorfosis de Ovidio: el canto de Orfeo tras la pérdida de su amada Eurídice y, al final, la muerte de Orfeo, despedazado por las Ménades y su reencuentro con Eurídice en el reino de las sombras. La segunda parte comienza con el soneto metapoético "Respirar, poema invisible", que cierra el ciclo temático de la "respiración" y el "espacio". Quizá lo más importante en esta obra es que, en el abordaje del mito que hace Rilke, reside también el elemento artístico-metafísico de su poética madura. Ya el primer soneto nos abre su perspectiva: la "acción" que "narra" el Soneto I ocurre en un espacio lingüístico que el mismo texto crea. Esto nos revela una característica central de la mitopoesía moderna de Rilke, que la distingue categóricamente del discurso "literal", "fáctico" del mito. Hay dos posibles lecturas que podrían resultar familiares a cualquier lector moderno: ¿no es este giro hacia el mundo del lenguaje el "giro lingüístico", tan característico del siglo XX, que reduce toda referencia a la realidad a un acontecimiento puramente inmanente en el lenguaje (según la conocida fórmula de Wittgenstein: "Los límites de nuestro lenguaje son los límites de nuestro mundo")? ¿Y no es el poema un ejemplo de la autoreferencia al proceso poético que también fue común en la literatura del siglo XX, es decir un poema sobre poesía? Los Sonetos a Orfeo dejan en claro que, en Rilke, el discurso poético es siempre la expresión de la experiencia del mundo, nunca una acción especial, autónoma y autosuficiente, sino modelo de un comportamiento existencial.

Sonnets to Orpheus is Rainer Maria Rilke's first and only sonnet sequence. It is an undisputed masterpiece by one of the greatest modern poets, translated here by a master of translation, David Young. Rilke revived and transformed the traditional sonnet sequence in the Sonnets. Instead of centering on love for a particular person, as has many other sonneteers, he wrote an extended love poem to the world, celebrating such diverse things as mirrors, dogs, fruit, breathing, and childhood. Many of the sonnets are addressed to two recurrent figures: the god Orpheus (prototype of the poet) and a young dancer, whose death is treated elegiacally. These ecstatic and meditative lyric poems are a kind of manual on how to approach the world – how to understand and love it. David Young's is the first most sensitive of the translations of this work, superior to other translations in sound and sense. The fifty-five Sonnets to Orpheus were written by Rilke in February 1922, in less than two weeks. Their central themes are Orpheus and his song of praise; what is sung is "Dasein", "being- here", the presence in the world. Rilke considered as a betrayal of his poetry any translation that would not reproduce, together with his thinking, his internal movement, his rhythm, his rhymes, his music. The goal of the translator has been to make that orchestration "heard" as much as possible, to try and reproduce the structure, rhyme and rhythm, of Rilke's Sonnets, in order for these translations to sound as echoes of the originals.
