There is a music of leaving, as surely as there is that of arriving. And it is this distinct soulful music that we often hear, however faintly, in the background of our lives. McCallum’s poems are about elephants being traipsed through the Queens Midtown Tunnel, an unstable child’s slide, and roaming island dogs. About a visit to a family home before it is sold, a late night conversation in a plane above an ocean, and shrewd Irish falcons. About eloquent gravestones, da Vinci’s unfinished joke book, the elegant legs of a heron, and landing on the moon. About a jackknife dive at dusk, a young girl’s sleepover, and a memory instantly evoked by brushing against a stand of lavender. McCallum’s hope for her new book The Music of Leaving is that it delivers to her readers those “magical moments of understanding” that a good poem can.

Leaving The South written by Mary Weaks-Baxter and has been published by Univ. Press of Mississippi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-17 with History categories.

Millions of southerners left the South in the twentieth century in a mass migration that has, in many ways, rewoven the fabric of American society on cultural, political, and economic levels. Because the movements of southerners--and people in general--are controlled not only by physical boundaries marked on a map but also by narratives that define movement, narrative is central in building and sustaining borders and in breaking them down. In Leaving the South: Border Crossing Narratives and the Remaking of Southern Identity, author Mary Weaks-Baxter analyzes narratives by and about those who left the South and how those narratives have remade what it means to be southern. Drawing from a broad range of narratives, including literature, newspaper articles, art, and music, Weaks-Baxter outlines how these displacement narratives challenged concepts of southern nationhood and redefined southern identity. Close attention is paid to how depictions of the South, particularly in the media and popular culture, prompted southerners to leave the region and changed perceptions of southerners to outsiders as well as how southerners saw themselves. Through an examination of narrative, Weaks-Baxter reveals the profound effect gender, race, and class have on the nature of the migrant's journey, the adjustment of the migrant, and the ultimate decision of the migrant either to stay put or return home, and connects the history of border crossings to the issues being considered in today's national landscape.

The lives of Scottish farmers Jim and Joey Rutherford spanned most of the twentieth century and encompassed great social and economic change. In this memoir, their daughter and author Anne Ewing provides a testament to her parents’ steadfastness to each other and to their family and friends. With humorous anecdotes, rich details, and images, Leaving the Land shares the heritage of the Rutherfords, who were born during the First World War and married during the Second. From a very modest start, they built up their farming business over thirty-five years, always with an adventurous and enterprising approach. Their personalities combined the thrift and work ethic typical of their generation, with an openness of mind, generosity of spirit, and sense of humour not always associated with the Scottish character. Not only does Leaving the Land communicate one family’s legacy, but also provides insight into Scottish history and gives commentary on signs of the times such as the socioeconomic trends, the shift from rural to urban living, and the effects of two world wars and the Great Depression. It also serves as a remembrance of lives well lived in a time and place that will soon exist in memory only.

He beat the villain. He won the war. He even fell in love. Now comes the good part, right? Now comes the happily ever after... So why can’t Simon Snow get off the couch? What he needs, according to his best friend, is a change of scenery. He just needs to see himself in a new light. That’s how Simon and Penny and Baz end up in a vintage convertible, tearing across the American West. They find trouble, of course. (Dragons, vampires, skunk-headed things with shotguns.) And they get lost. They get so lost, they start to wonder whether they ever knew where they were headed in the first place. With Wayward Son, Rainbow Rowell has written a book for everyone who ever wondered what happened to the Chosen One after he saved the day. There's a first time for everything …as thirty-nine-year-old Zoe Vidrine learned the hard way. She was pregnant! Now the aging rock 'n' roller had to change her tune fast. Her plan: leave behind the temptations of L.A.—and her famous hard-partying ex who had got her into this mess—and return to her family's Louisiana homestead to regroup. It had been twenty years, and the Day Glo hippie haven where Zoe had spent an unhappy childhood was gone, remodeled in the signature pastels of her prim sister Alice. Alice's aesthetic sense was hard enough to swallow, but her holier-than-thou attitude set the stage for a showdown. Still, as the sisters gradually came to terms with their shared past, would there be a meeting of the minds? Talk about firsts… USA TODAY bestselling author Rexanne Becnel has created all twenty-two of her novels in coffeehouses, writing longhand. Thanks to the stimulating effects of way too many cups of coffee, she's found a grateful audience of both readers and critics.

Across The Western Ocean written by Mick Moloney and has been published by Famine Folio this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with History categories.

For centuries Irish people on both sides of the Atlantic have expressed some of their deepest cultural concerns and memories through song. Passed on orally and in print, they afforded a portal through which everyday experience was filtered and understood. This folio addresses the experiences of Famine victims and Irish emigrants thematically through song. It explores songs describing the eviction of helpless tenants from their homes and lands, songs about leaving Ireland, songs of lovers parting from one another, songs about the hazards of the crossing, songs about arriving in North America, and, finally, songs about the challenges faced by immigrants settling into a new life in a new land. Ireland's Great Hunger Museum at Quinnipiac University publishes Famine Folios, a unique resource for students, scholars and researchers, as well as general readers, covering many aspects of the Famine in Ireland from 1845-1852 - the worst demographic catastrophe of nineteenth-century Europe. The essays are interdisciplinary in nature, and make available new research in Famine studies by internationally established scholars in history, art history, cultural theory, philosophy, media history, political economy, literature and music. CD Contents: An Drimin Donn Dilis; Skibbereen; Lone Shanakyle; Lough Sheelin's Side; You Lovers All; Sailing Off to the Yankee Land; No Irish Need Apply; Erin's Green Shore
