Excerpt from Songs, Sonnets and Essays: Songs and Essays In submitting this collection of poems to the public, I am not unconscious of my literary limitations. The natural misgivings which come to every tyro in this field of effort are keenly experienced by me. I have yielded, however, to the wishes of my friends, and, encouraged by them, venture to offer my first effusions in a collective form. My lyrics and sonnets have appeared at different intervals in Catholic periodicals. They were written during the busy days of my student life, when there was little leisure to bestow mature thought and labor upon them. Another motive for this publication is to give permanency to the poems which my uncle, the Rev. D. O. Crowley, had written in his earlier years. Front childhood I learned to love the music of his verses, and the publication of them now affords me an opportunity of manifesting both my admiration and affection. The permission of my very reverend superior has been granted for the issuance of this volume. Authorization from Father Crowley will be found in a fac-simile letter on another page. "The essays presented here were written for this book by scholars who are either specialists in the Sonnets or in their chosen topic. I felt that it would provide an opportunity for those who have been making some of the chief contributions to offer further and perhaps better thoughts on the Sonnets, and for others to fill in obvious gaps by studying certain aspects of the poems which had been neglected or ignored. Naturally, there is among the writers considerable variety in approach and point of view, not least in the matter of which texts of the Sonnets to use. But this is merely in the inevitable salutary result of allowing independent and conscientious scholars to 'have their say.' And in the nature of the case some essays are moretechnical than others, yet I think it is quite accurate to say that lucidity generally prevails." -Publisher.

Elizabethan Women And The Poetry Of Courtship written by Ilona Bell and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with History categories.

This 1999 book offers an original study of lyric form and social custom in the Elizabethan age. Ilona Bell explores the tendency of Elizabethan love poems not only to represent an amorous thought, but to conduct the courtship itself. Where studies have focused on courtiership, patronage and preferment at court, her focus is on love poetry, amorous courtship, and relations between Elizabethan men and women. The book examines the ways in which the tropes and rhetoric of love poetry were used to court Elizabethan women (not only at court and in the great houses, but in society at large) and how the women responded to being wooed, in prose, poetry and speech. Bringing together canonical male poets and women writers, Ilona Bell investigates a range of texts addressed to, written by, read, heard or transformed by Elizabethan women, and charts the beginnings of a female lyric tradition.

Melodies Unheard written by Anthony Hecht and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-05-22 with Literary Criticism categories.

In these essays, acclaimed poet and critic Anthony Hecht explores the ways in which poetry can be read and the many pleasures it affords. Ranging from Shakespeare's sonnets to Eliot, Frost, and Simic, Melodies Unheard offers profound insight into poetic form, meter, rhyme, and meaning--into the mysteries of poetry itself. Anthony Hecht's vast knowledge of literature and his gift for mesmerizing argument are both amply present in Melodies Unheard. Whether defending the sestina against accusations of boredom and dolefulness or examining the structure of Shakespeare's sonnets or unraveling some of the complexity of Moby-Dick, these essays are models of civility, candor, and grace. I know of no other poet, certainly none of Anthony Hecht's stature, who sheds as much light on the intricacies and hidden designs of poems and who does it with such style.--Mark Strand Anthony Hecht declares himself 'a poet first and only secondarily a critic, ' but Melodies Unheard proves again that he is a master in both trades. His discourse on such subjects as rhyme, the sestina, and 'the music of forms' is both scholarly and delightful; his articles on individual poets are finely done; and best of al
