Le Roman De La Manekine written by Philippe de Remi and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-04 with Literary Criticism categories.

Le Roman de la Manekine marks the beginning of its author's literary career. Philippe de Remi, on whom much attention has focused in the last two decades, was an unusual figure: a 13th-century land-holder and professional administrator who loved literature and who produced a large and varied corpus of narrative and lyric. Here is presented for the first time since 1884 a scholarly edition of Philippe's first romance, a tale centering on a heroine of great courage and integrity who passes through many trials without losing hope. The text is accompanied by a line-by-line English version, and by extensive commentary touching on the author, his milieu, and the literary context and major themes of the romance. Studies of the manuscript (Paris BNF fr 1588), its illustrations (all of them reproduced), and its history, have been provided by Alison Stones and Roger Middleton. The volume should be of interest to specialists in medieval French literature, to general readers who find English translations useful, and to scholars in the fields of medieval art and manuscript history.

Beyond Nature And Culture written by Philippe Descola and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-08-01 with Social Science categories.

“Gives to anthropological reflection a new starting point and will become the compulsory reference for all our debates in the years to come.” —Claude Lévi-Strauss, on the French edition Beyond Nature and Culture has been a major influence in European intellectual life since its French publication in 2005. Here, finally, it is brought to English-language readers. At its heart is a question central to both anthropology and philosophy: what is the relationship between nature and culture? Culture—as a collective human making, of art, language, and so forth—is often seen as essentially different from nature, which is portrayed as a collective of the nonhuman world, of plants, animals, geology, and natural forces. Philippe Descola shows this essential difference to be not only a Western notion, but also a very recent one. Drawing on ethnographic examples from around the world and theoretical understandings from cognitive science, structural analysis, and phenomenology, he formulates a sophisticated new framework, the “four ontologies” —animism, totemism, naturalism, and analogism—to account for all the ways we relate ourselves to nature. By thinking beyond nature and culture as a simple dichotomy, Descola offers a fundamental reformulation by which anthropologists and philosophers can see the world afresh. “A compelling and original account of where the nature-culture binary has come from, where it might go—and what we might imagine in its place.” —Somatosphere “The most important book coming from French anthropology since Claude Lévi-Strauss’s Anthropologie Structurale.” —Bruno Latour, author of An Inquiry into Modes of Existence “Descola’s challenging new worldview should be of special interest to a wide range of scientific and academic disciplines from anthropology to zoology . . . Highly recommended.” —Choice

Taking Our Country Back written by Daniel Kreiss and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-06 with Political Science categories.

Taking Our Country Back presents the previously untold history of the uptake of new media in Democratic electoral campaigning over the last decade. Drawing on interviews with more than sixty political staffers, fieldwork during the 2008 primaries and general election, and archival research, Daniel Kreiss shows how a group of young, technically-skilled Internet staffers came together on the Howard Dean campaign and created a series of innovations in organization, tools, and practice that have changed the elections game. He charts how these individuals carried their innovations across Democratic politics, contributing to a number of electoral victories, including Barack Obama's historic bid for the presidency. In revealing this history, the book provides a rich empirical look at the communication tools, practices, and infrastructure that shape contemporary online campaigning. Taking Our Country Back is a serious and vital analysis, both on-the-ground and theoretical, of how a small group of visionary people transformed what campaigning means today and how technical and cultural work coordinates collective action.

Shame written by Salman Rushdie and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-08-31 with Fiction categories.

The novel that set the stage for his modern classic, The Satanic Verses, Shame is Salman Rushdie's unforgettable epic. Omar Khayyam Shakil had three mothers who shared everything. They shared the symptoms of pregnancy; they shared the son that they all claim to have borne on the same night. Raised at their six breasts, Omar's mothers teach him to live a life without shame. And it is training that proves very useful when he leaves his mothers' fortress and makes the fateful mistake of falling in love. For he finds himself an unwitting player in an ongoing duel between the families of two men - one a celebrated wager of war, the other a debauched lover of pleasure - living in a world caught between honour and humiliation, where a moment of shame could prove fatal. 'Shame is every bit as good as Midnight's Children. It is a pitch-black comedy of public life and historical imperatives' The Times

The Cosmography Of Aethicus Ister written by Aethicus Ister and has been published by Brepols Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Classical geography categories.

One of the most skilful forgeries of the Middle Ages, the Cosmography of Aethicus Ister has puzzled scholars for over 150 years, not least because of its challenging Latinity. Written at a western centre in the first part of the eighth century, the work purports to be a heavily censored epitome made by St. Jerome of a cosmography by an Istrian philosopher named Aethicus. This writer, who is otherwise unknown, describes a flat-earth universe resembling that of Cosmas Indicopleustes, then gives an eye-witness account of his travels to the isles of the gentiles in the North and East. There he encounters not only savage races, but also monsters, Amazons, and other figures of mythology. Alexander the Great also figures prominently by immuring the unclean races, who will escape to ravage the world at the coming of the Anti-Christ. Not all is fiction. The author's observations on volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis will interest the scientific reader. The last part deals in coded fashion with contemporary events in the eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans, and may provide a clue to the author's origins. The present volume offers a new critical text, the first translation, and a detailed commentary covering every aspect of the work.
