Ruth Ben-Ghiat provides the first in-depth study of feature and documentary films produced under the auspices of Mussolini’s government that took as their subjects or settings Italy’s African and Balkan colonies. These "empire films" were Italy's entry into an international market for the exotic. The films engaged its most experienced and cosmopolitan directors (Augusto Genina, Mario Camerini) as well as new filmmakers (Roberto Rossellini) who would make their marks in the postwar years. Ben-Ghiat sees these films as part of the aesthetic development that would lead to neo-realism. Shot in Libya, Somalia, and Ethiopia, these movies reinforced Fascist racial and labor policies and were largely forgotten after the war. Fascist and colonial legacies have been determinant in shaping how Italian colonialism has been narrated in Italy till the late 1960s. This book deals with the complex problem of public memory and discursive amnesia. The detailed research that underpins this book makes it no longer possible to claim that after 1945 there was an absolute and traumatic silence concerning Italy's colonial occupation of North and East Africa. However, the abiding public use of this history confirms the existence of an extremely selective and codified memory of that past. The author shows that colonial discourse persisted in historiography, newspapers, newsreels and film. Popular culture appears intertwined with political and economic interests and the power inscribed in elite and scientific knowledge. While readdressing the often mistaken historical time line that ignores that actual Italian colonial ties did not end with the fall of Fascism, but in 1960 with Somalia becoming independent, this book suggests that a new post Fascist Italian identity was the crucial issue in reappraisals of a national colonial past.

Italian film star Bartolomeo Pagano's "Maciste" played a key role in his nation’s narratives of identity during World War I and after. Jacqueline Reich traces the racial, class, and national transformations undergone by this Italian strongman from African slave in Cabiria (1914), his first film, to bourgeois gentleman, to Alpine soldier of the Great War, to colonial officer in Italy's African adventures. Reich reveals Maciste as a figure who both reflected classical ideals of masculine beauty and virility (later taken up by Mussolini and used for political purposes) and embodied the model Italian citizen. The 12 films at the center of the book, recently restored and newly accessible to a wider public, together with relevant extra-cinematic materials, provide a rich resource for understanding the spread of discourses on masculinity, and national and racial identities during a turbulent period in Italian history. Con “Alla scoperta delle proprie radici” l’autore prosegue le sue fantasiose narrazioni. A differenza di quanto scritto nella maggioranza dei suoi libri, dove le storie talvolta avventurose riguardavano cittadini italiani trasferiti in Brasile, vi è un’inversione di tendenza come del resto è già accaduto con il romanzo “Il passato ritorna”. Learco descrive le vicende della ventisettenne Vera Luzia, discendente di italiani ma brasiliana per nascita. La protagonista, rammentando i racconti di nonno Giobatta è spinta a ad andare a scoprire le proprie antiche radici nella terra avita. È un ritorno ad usi e costumi, spesso dimenticati, è come immergersi in quella italianità non conosciuta come vera pelle del proprio essere. In parallelo con il viaggio di ritorno di Vera Luzia nella Genova del 2011, c’è quello di andata del bis-nonno Luisito Bottaro e della sua famiglia nella Santos del più lontano 1922. Ciò che accadrà ai protagonisti, il lettore potrà scoprirlo leggendo, pagina dopo pagina, la cronaca di quanto scritto dall’autore, con il suo inconfondibile stile.
