Soul Unsung written by Kevin Le Gendre and has been published by Equinox Publishing (UK) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Soul music categories.

Soul music has specific sounds. Soul as it appears in the term 'Soul jazz' has a vastly different sound to soul as it appears in the term 'Nu Classic Soul' yet there are links between the two. The socio-cultural connotations of the two 'souls' are also vastly different as one would expect given the fact that they pertain to eras that are separated by some four decades. What happened to soul in that time and space? This book describes the sound of soul in an evocative and as incisive a way by analyzing the real nuts and bolts that have been used to construct the music - songform, vocal techniques, instruments, machines and production methods. The overriding interest of the book is not just standard soul but strange soul as performed by Sly Stone, Me Shell N'dgeocello, Bootsy Collins and Bilal Oliver. It also looks at the lack of clear demarcation between strange and standard soul within the work of the same artist. Marvin Gaye started with standard soul and became strange, as did Stevie Wonder. As for Omar's There's Nothing Like This, it is a piece of standard soul, a flimsy one at that, whereas Omar's Best By Far is a piece of prime strange soul, a performance that could only have come from a Briton of Jamaican descent. Some soul artists are standard and strange on the same album. The tension between the two states of tradition and innovation is fascinatingly put under the microscope and has a wider resonance in one of soul's musical cousins: jazz. The book is not just about music though. The notion of soul, the mythology of it, the ideal of it, has a very wide range of connotations. Le Gendre looks at culture, lifestyle and attitudes to really get a handle on what soul is and how strange some strange souls - we're talking pill-popping, gun-toting, S&M loving, codpiece sporting, lampshade wearing brothers and sisters - have been.

It's time to set the record straight by telling a Black story shot through with white participation. It's as much about race as it is about music. It's about a period 40 to 70 years ago when the call for civil rights, for an end to economic inequality, and for Black power tore cities apart-and at the same time gave rise to music of lasting expressiveness and groove.Blacks tuned into songs by artists who recorded on a gang of local labels and major labels such as Motown, Stax, Volt, Atlantic and Philadelphia International. In the '60s and into the '70s, Motown hitmakers in particular appealed to Black and white alike.Soul music was the soundtrack for civil rights. It was the voice of protest and freedom, too, from Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)" to the Temptations' "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," the Impressions' "People Get Ready," and "Respect," a defiant Otis Redding hit that Aretha Franklin covered even more successfully. In confronting social issues, soul music presented a reality rarely touched on by mainstream rock.A deep love soul music can ease despair about today's circumstances -political polarization, climate crises, violence, economic inequality, intransigence over gender issues. The appreciation of soul music can be a restorative for our fraught souls.

About the book Right from my school and college days, I was considerably fascinated by literature. As a student of two varied languages Sanskrit and English, and Hindi being my mother tongue, it gave me a vast arena to learn and colour my world of imagination. I have tried to compose a few dainty delicacies in emulating a flower that opens up slowly and steadily, inhaling the morning breath till it fully blooms. I have tried to capture the essence of love and nature, those everlasting desires along with scattered dreams, and broken hearts with a faith in the eternal gleam. I hope you will savour my sojourn full of poetic fragrance as readers. With wings of aspirations, uninhibited love from my family, friends, and support from the literary fraternity, I hope to soar upwards with an unstoppable heart. With these words, I take this opportunity with utmost pleasure and proudly present you all, the Susurration of my unhindered, unfettered heart, my aspirations culminating into my book entitled "Whispers of the soul".

Move On Up written by Aaron Cohen and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-09-25 with Social Science categories.

A Chicago Tribune Book of 2019, Notable Chicago Reads A Booklist Top 10 Arts Book of 2019 A No Depression Top Music Book of 2019 Curtis Mayfield. The Chi-Lites. Chaka Khan. Chicago’s place in the history of soul music is rock solid. But for Chicagoans, soul music in its heyday from the 1960s to the 1980s was more than just a series of hits: it was a marker and a source of black empowerment. In Move On Up, Aaron Cohen tells the remarkable story of the explosion of soul music in Chicago. Together, soul music and black-owned businesses thrived. Record producers and song-writers broadcast optimism for black America’s future through their sophisticated, jazz-inspired productions for the Dells and many others. Curtis Mayfield boldly sang of uplift with unmistakable grooves like “We’re a Winner” and “I Plan to Stay a Believer.” Musicians like Phil Cohran and the Pharaohs used their music to voice Afrocentric philosophies that challenged racism and segregation, while Maurice White of Earth, Wind, and Fire and Chaka Khan created music that inspired black consciousness. Soul music also accompanied the rise of African American advertisers and the campaign of Chicago’s first black mayor, Harold Washington, in 1983. This empowerment was set in stark relief by the social unrest roiling in Chicago and across the nation: as Chicago’s homegrown record labels produced rising stars singing songs of progress and freedom, Chicago’s black middle class faced limited economic opportunities and deep-seated segregation, all against a backdrop of nationwide deindustrialization. Drawing on more than one hundred interviews and a music critic’s passion for the unmistakable Chicago soul sound, Cohen shows us how soul music became the voice of inspiration and change for a city in turmoil.

These verses feature perfectly painted pictures and gardens of good and evil in equal representation, depicting yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Author Derrick DerRon Holloway has loved and disdained himself between the lines, revealing what served as his souls salvation and leaving judgment and condemnation entirely up to others. He travels deep into his darkest and all too familiar sins, expressed in his addiction to She in the transparency of his testimony pieces. He hopes to hold up mirrors to help others search their souls in an attempt to find redemption in the end. Holloway speaks not of heroics but of things that often go unspoken and unheard. In this collection of poetry, one man presents expressions of his heart and soul, offering moments of nostalgia, reminiscence, and love.

2014 James Beard Foundation Book Award, Reference and Scholarship Honor Book for Nonfiction, Black Caucus of the American Library Association In this insightful and eclectic history, Adrian Miller delves into the influences, ingredients, and innovations that make up the soul food tradition. Focusing each chapter on the culinary and social history of one dish--such as fried chicken, chitlins, yams, greens, and "red drinks--Miller uncovers how it got on the soul food plate and what it means for African American culture and identity. Miller argues that the story is more complex and surprising than commonly thought. Four centuries in the making, and fusing European, Native American, and West African cuisines, soul food--in all its fried, pork-infused, and sugary glory--is but one aspect of African American culinary heritage. Miller discusses how soul food has become incorporated into American culture and explores its connections to identity politics, bad health raps, and healthier alternatives. This refreshing look at one of America's most celebrated, mythologized, and maligned cuisines is enriched by spirited sidebars, photographs, and twenty-two recipes.
