Sound Theology: Pipe Organ Power Plays among Protestants, Pulpits, Professors, and Peers surveys the liturgical soundscape during and after the Reformation with regard to the use of instruments in worship in general, and the (dis)use of the pipe organ specifically. Why were some sounds considered sacred, and others profane? The book tells the story of first-generation reformers' approaches to shaping their new Reformed worship services in regard to music, and the resulting debates, power plays, and ultimate compromises. Sound Theology also examines second-generation Protestants' affirmations, adaptations, and reversals. Sound Theology: A Reader is a companion volume of curated primary source material. Together, Sound Theology's two volumes tell a little-known, but colorful and foundational story that shaped Reformed worship for centuries to come.

"Webb offers a carefully and creatively wrought phenomenology of sound, showing its relation to the proclamation of God's Word. His keen insights on the primordial nature of sound, speech, and hearing will force theologians to examine, once again, what it means to be a 'hearer of the Word.' Webb masterfully displays the intrinsic relationship between dynamic listening and speech--how intent hearing and confident proclamation are intimately conjoined. He has the rare gift of combining acute theological insight with a mellifluous, readable style. The nature of God's own Word here becomes clearer: vibrant and tensile, life-giving in tone and texture. Whether examining Jesus as the voice of the Father, the role of voice in innertrinitarian relations, or the relationship between voice and gender, Webb offers the kind of thought-provoking and highly creative reflections rarely found elsewhere. He has a creative and incisive theological mind." --Thomas Guarino, Seton Hall University "Being appreciative of Webb's earlier work on hyperbolic language in theology and preaching, I welcomed The Divine Voice. How risky to toss a spoken word into a room of silent readers and expect it to be heard! I was reprimanded, instructed, and moved by the sound of this book. Were I still in the seminary classroom, The Divine Voice would be required reading before one word was said about how to preach." --Fred B. Craddock, The Craddock Center "The Divine Voice is a book of academic theology worthy of the Psalmist who sang 'Day after day the word goes forth, night after night the story is told. Soundless the speech, voiceless the talk, yet the story is echoed throughout the world' (Ps 19:2-3). Stephen Webb is an 'acoustemological' theologian, for whom speech can be prayerful as silence, and silence as instructive as proclamation. When the sounds heard by faith reach Webb's ever-insightful and creative mind, only synthesia could result, and the result is a gift for us all." --Peter Ochs, University of Virginia

Essays by Hart, Horton, Frame, Gaffin, Godfrey, and others highlight this study of the crucial role the Westeminster seminaries have played in the development of systematic theology during the past seventy-five years. This volume examines the contributions of theologians from John Murray and his Princeton predecessors, to Robert Strimple and beyond. In four parts, contributors examine the history of systematics, its relationship to other disciplines, issues of special importance, and the impact of Westminster theology on the broader life of the church. Essays on how systematic theology connects with biblical theology, apologetics, and practical theology, as well as discussions of justification, the free offer of the gospel, and the centrality of covenant, should interest students, pastors, and scholars. Music, by its indeterminate levels of meaning, poses a necessary challenge to a theology bound up in words. Its distinctive nature as temporal and embodied allows a unique point of access to theological understanding. Yet music does not exist in a cultural vacuum, conveying universal truths, but is a part of the complex nature of human lives. This understanding of music as theology stems from a conviction that music is a theological means of knowing: knowing something indeterminate, yet meaningful. This is an exploration of the means by which music might say something otherwise unsayable, and in doing so, allow for an encounter with the mystery of God.

Enduring Truth argues that faithfulness to Scripture is the solution to a “crisis” among African American preaching. Though misinterpreting God’s Word is not restricted to one race or culture, author Aaron Lavender identifies three factors that have precipitated the decline of black preaching specifically: racial segregation, black liberation theology, and prosperity theology. The book’s first chapter recounts the history of the crisis, noting how discrimination in theological education led black ministers to liberal colleges and seminaries that prophetically confronted Jim Crow but taught the social gospel and other forms of theological error. Such schools ultimately were harmful to the spiritual health of black churches. Subsequent chapters discuss the role of biblical exegesis in preaching, develop a theology of preaching, and suggest preaching methods for the postmodern world. Every biblical text has one meaning, according to Lavender. The preacher’s job is to determine and communicate that meaning, then show its relevance in the cultural context of his hearers. Proof-texting and relativism, Lavender writes, are two great enemies of biblical preaching. While focused on the African American context, this volume addresses topics relevant to all preachers. Enduring Truth is suited both for ministry practitioners and preaching courses. It will help readers elevate the Word of God over the worldly allures of any ministry setting.

Sound Doctrine for Today’s Christians addresses a multitude of today’s issues from a scriptural stand point. The author relies upon the scriptures to provide the commentary as chapter after chapter of Biblical clarity is given to provide sound doctrine for the reader. The end result is a forthright scriptural presentation in complete thoughts as referenced from the King James Version (exclusively) of the Bible. There are forty chapters presented that cover a gamut of topics from the reasons for reading the Bible to faith issues, differentiation of Christianity in terms of denominations and from other religions, personal life choices and the choices of a nation. Profound statement after statement is presented with the irrefutable clarity of the scriptural basis provided for each statement. This book provides a basis for Biblical doctrine examination and well as an awesome evangelistic thrust.
