Sounding Off written by Peter Kivy and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06-28 with Philosophy categories.

Sounding Off brings together a selection of essays on philosophy of music written by Peter Kivy—the leading expert on the subject. The essays fall into four groups, corresponding to Kivy's major interests. Part I contains two essays on the nature of musical genius. In Part II, three essays take up the subject of authenticity in performance, and explore what Kivy terms 'the authenticity of interpretation'. Part III contains four essays concerning the much discussed issues of musical representation and musical meaning. Finally, Part IV consists of three essays on the 'pure musical parameters': these are essays on 'music alone' or 'absolute music'—music as the pure, formal structure of (sometimes) expressive sound. Eight of the eleven essays presented here are previously unpublished, and the book includes two appendices which provide Kivy's responses to criticism.

Sounding Off Theorizing Disability In Music written by Neil Lerner and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-11-06 with Music categories.

Disability, understood as culturally stigmatized bodily difference (including physical and mental impairments of all kinds), is a pervasive and permanent aspect of the human condition. While the biology of bodily difference is the proper study for science and medicine, the meaning that we attach to bodily difference is the proper study of humanists. The interdisciplinary field of Disability Studies has recently emerged to theorize social and cultural constructions of the meaning of disability. Although there has been an astonishing outpouring of humanistic work in Disability Studies in the past ten years, there has been virtually no echo in musicology or music theory. Sounding Off: Theorizing Disability in Music is the first book-length work to focus on the historical and theoretical issues of music as it relates to disability. It shows that music, like literature and the other arts, simultaneously reflects and constructs cultural attitudes toward disability. Sounding Off: Theorizing Disability in Music promises to be a landmark study for scholars and students of music, disability, and culture.

Extended Play written by John Corbett and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with Music categories.

In Extended Play, one of the country's most innovative music writers conducts a wide-ranging tour through the outer limits of contemporary music. Over the course of more than twenty-five portraits, interviews, and essays, John Corbett engages artists from lands as distant as Sweden, Siberia, and Saturn. With a special emphasis on African American and European improvisers, the book explores the famous and the little known, from John Cage and George Clinton to Anthony Braxton and Sun Ra. Employing approaches as diverse as the music he celebrates, Corbett illuminates the sound and theory of funk and rap, blues and jazz, contemporary classical, free improvisation, rock, and reggae. Using cultural critique and textual theory, Corbett addresses a broad spectrum of issues, such as the status of recorded music in postmodern culture, the politics of self-censorship, experimentation, and alternativism in the music industry, and the use of metaphors of space and madness in the work of African American musicians. He follows these more theoretically oriented essays with a series of extensive profiles and in-depth interviews that offer contrasting and complementary perspectives on some of the world's most creative musicians and their work. Included here are more than twenty original photographs as well as a meticulously annotated discography. The result is one of the most thoughtful, and most entertaining, investigations of contemporary music available today.

A single christian woman and the struggles she and her friends encountered. The bench-warmers in her life who professed to be Christians, but were really hypocrites. The choices she made and the paths God took her down. How God let her know that He was with her from the beginning. The prayers that were answered and the visions she still doesn't understand. Don't be surprised if, after you start reading this book you won't be able to put it down, because one of these paths taken will remind you of an experience in your life.
