What if we conceived of ourselves as auditory beings rather than visual ones? Our attitude would shift, and so would our availability to the world, inside and out. Centering in sound entails receptive interaction with the unconscious, a participatory style of consciousness. Rather than “bringing light” to unconscious energies, it means being resonant to it, being alive. In this delightful, phenomenological account, Kittelson writes in lively pursuit of the language of hearing, an ode to the persistent primacy of the ear. It’s right here, she says, just around the corner from our noses. Kittelson’s ear awareness finds side-doors into the topic. She lets us in on a secret as intriguing as Freud’s footnote about the gradually diminishing sense of smell in human beings: we have a lapsed instinct for interiority. For turning inward, for spiraling deep into the dark, for following evocative reverberations to their source. - from the Foreword by Nor Hall, Ph.D.

The Healing Imagination written by Ann Ulanov and has been published by Daimon this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with Self-Help categories.

This eloquent work speaks of the centrality of imagination in the life of the spirit. Ann and Barry Ulanov describe the imagination as a bridge between the psyche and the spirit. Using rich imagery drawn from literature, film, and their own experience as therapists, they unlock for us the healing power of our imagination. "Imagination heals by building a bridge sturdy enough to link us up, each of us, to the river of being already present in us, to the currents flowing through us and among us in our unconscious life." After describing this healing power of imagination, the authors go on to show how it is vital in the spiritual life: in preaching, prayer, teaching, counseling, and politics.

This fascinating collection of essays contains a variety of perspectives about the use of expressive arts for facilitating physical and emotional healing. Each author within brings a fresh approach and unique experiences to their writing. Within these pages, you will find many ideas for the use of the arts and can learn how to engage the inner layers of the self that allow natural healing processes of the body and soul to flourish. When we fully engage an art modality, we find ourselves in a place in our consciousness that could be called 'healingspace,' where we feel ourselves whole and re-member ourselves as well. From psychic trauma to physical illness, dis-ease of many kinds may be addressed through the various techniques discussed here. The tools offered by some authors are population specific and age appropriate, while several authors have given us the philosophical underpinnings for it all. While the authors within represent the grassroots voices of this new and rapidly expanding field, several of them have developed their own methods for using the arts, and have thriving practices. Our approach is wholistic. Music, visual arts, movement, dance, and poetry are discussed as separate modalities and in combination with one another in a process or flow. The reader will engage in our experiences with these modalities as they have been lived. The complementary CD that accompanies this book will allows the listener to have a full sound experience of toning. If a rationale is needed for establishing arts programs in medical centers or other health facilities, it can be found here. The book offers tools for self development and for group facilitation. Those wanting to expand their healing practice through the use of the arts will find the book to be a faithful guide. Anyone wishing for a fuller understanding of how the arts may work to facilitate healing will find much food for thought within these pages.

There is an art of listening. To be able really to listen, one should abandon or put aside all prejudices, pre-formulations and daily activities. When you are in a receptive state of mind, things can be easily understood; you are listening when your real attention is given to something. But unfortunately most of us listen through a screen of resistance. We are screened with prejudices, whether religious or spiritual, psychological or scientific; or with our daily worries, desires and fears. And with these for a screen, we listen. Therefore, we listen really to our own noise, to our own sound, not to what is being said. It is extremely difficult to put aside our training, our prejudices, our inclination, our resistance, and, reaching beyond the verbal expression, to listen so that we understand instantaneously. That is going to be one of our difficulties. The more we take our growth seriously, the more we will develop the desire to do so. And the more we get rid of our own neurotic shackles, the freer we will become to grow within ourselves, and to love and have concern for others. Thus we shall acquire a rational faith which will have the certainty and firmness of our own convictions, and this will pervade our entire concept of life. For listening to be effective as an art, we must be active participants in its whole process. This means not only working just through our ears. It also means responding holistically with our full hearing capacity and our inner perceptions. It entails being fully attentive and awake, alert at every minute to screen out inner prejudices, condemnations or preconceived notions. It means being active in thought and feeling and with one's eyes and ears to avoid inertia. It means being open and receptive to others. It demands of us an enhanced vitality, an aliveness, and a firm desire to commune with others. With all this in hand, we shall grow healthily as human beings, able to influence others with meaning. So we shall arrive at a sustained level of mutual and truthful communication

Race Sounds written by Nicole Brittingham Furlonge and has been published by University of Iowa Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-15 with Literary Criticism categories.

Forging new ideas about the relationship between race and sound, Furlonge explores how black artists--including well-known figures such as writers Ralph Ellison and Zora Neale Hurston, and singers Bettye LaVette and Aretha Franklin, among others--imagine listening. Drawing from a multimedia archive, Furlonge examines how many of the texts call on readers to "listen in print." In the process, she gives us a new way to read and interpret these canonical, aurally inflected texts, and demonstrates how listening allows us to engage with the sonic lives of difference as readers, thinkers, and citizens.

The sense of hearing was particularly important in the ancient world when the majority of people were illiterate. Rhetoric has been given attention in this context, but listening has been virtually ignored. This book deals with the practical and theological issues which listening to an incorporeal, unknowable God raised for early Christians.
