Part history, part legend, this is the story of Sundiata Keita: the heroic figure who founded the empire of Mali. A thirteenth-century oral epic, Sundiata sees the full-length tale captured in print for the first time. This is Sundiata, the epic tale of a man 'great among kings' who, through his legendary deeds and exploits, came to father an empire. For over 800 years, this story has been passed down to generations of listeners through spoken word. D.T. Niane's novelisation captures all the mystery and majesty of medieval African kingship. This ambitious story ranks alongside the Ancient Greek and Roman classics as one of the world's great adventure stories.

Regimes Of Mobility written by Noel B. Salazar and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-25 with Social Science categories.

Mobility studies emerged from a postmodern moment in which global ‘flows’ of capital, people and objects were increasingly noted and celebrated. Within this new scholarship, categories of migrancy are all seen through the same analytical lens. This book builds on, as well as critiques, past and present studies of mobility. In so doing, it challenges conceptual orientations built on binaries of difference that have impeded analyses of the interrelationship between mobility and stasis. These include methodological nationalism, which counterpoises concepts of internal and international movement and native and foreigner, and consequently normalises stasis. Instead, the book proposes a ‘regimes of mobility’ framework that addresses the relationships between mobility and immobility, localisation and transnational connection, experiences and imaginaries of migration, and rootedness and cosmopolitan openness. Within this framework and its emphasis on social fields of differential power, the various contributors to this collection ethnographically explore the disparities, inequalities, racialised representations and national mythscapes that facilitate and legitimate differential mobility and fixity. Although they examine nation-state building processes, the anthropological analysis is not confined by national boundaries. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

Through spoken words, music, call and response, jest, rhythmic utterance and declamation, the play vividly recreates the historical and epical journey of Sunjata, the genuine Lion King, unifier and founder of the 13th century Mali Empire. The legendary figure of Sunjata, the one who gave an official role to jali or the griot, the wordsmith and musical artist; also the one who, according to the tradition, with the help of the brotherhood of the master-hunters, at the beginning of his reign proclaimed in the Mand??n Charter that: The essence of slavery is extinct this day, from one wall to another, from one Mand??n border to another, that legendary figure remains permanent and well alive throughout West African griots accounts. To this day, the Sunjata Epic, as one of the greatest epic traditions of Africa, is still sung by Mandingo modern griots on the world performing stage. Here in this piece where spoken word and music, history and epic, legend and magical ritual are intrinsically interwoven, the iconic figure of Sunjata comes alive, accompanied by griots and griottes (masters and mistresses of spoken words and music), still emerging from a living and enduring culture thousands of years old, and still conveying a powerful and timeless significance in our modern era. Beyond the play, the eight hundred years old Sunjata Epic is still a social and cultural reality, a living performance told every seven years, on the sacred ground of Kangaba (Mali) the heartland of the old Mali Empire.?Ç travers paroles, musique, agent rythmique, r??pondeur, geste, prof??ration, et d??clamation, cette pi?¿ce, de mani?¿re vivante, recr??ee le parcours historique et ??pique de Soundjata, le Roi Lion, unificateur et fondateur de lempire du Mali au XIIIe si?¿cle.

"The son of Sogolon, the hunchback princess, and Maghan, known as 'the handsome', Sundiata grew up to fulfil the prophesies of the soothsayers that he would unite the twelve kingdoms of Mali into one of the most powerful empires ever known in Africa, which at its peak stretched right across the savanna belt from the shores of the Atlantic to the dusty walls of Timbuktu." "Retold by generations of griots - the guardians of African culture - this oral tradition has been handed down from the thirteenth century and captures all the mystery and majesty of medieval African kingship. It is an epic tale - part history, part legend - which should rank alongside the Iliad and the Odyssey as one of the world's great adventure stories." "This Revised Edition contains additional material to help the reader better understand the context in which this popular story is set, including: background information, material on oral tradition, pronunciation and spelling, and a who's who of characters/glossary of places."--BOOK JACKET.
