Safari guide Jeff Williams has brought together a treasure-trove of stories of dramatic events that occurred whilst guides were leading parties through the bush on foot. Often these were recounted during evenings sitting around a campfire with friends and guide colleagues, swapping yarns and sharing their experiences. Frequently guests were there listening enthralled, shocked and amused in equal measure and sometimes the telling of the tale evoked vivid images.A walking trail in the bush is the ultimate adventure for a visitor to wild Africa and it is the skill and experience of their guides that allow them to do this safely. These walks highlight the essence of the bush - the sights, sounds, and scents that still embody the Africa of the past. Nevertheless, there are occasions when, in spite of the guide's best efforts, unplanned confrontations with potentially dangerous animals occur. Usually these end comfortably with only an adrenaline rush for guests to carry home or publish on social media. But occasionally things become much more dramatic. The reader will hear of potentially perilous situations involving encounters with charging lions, angry elephants, cantankerous buffalos, curious rhinos and, worst of all, the animals' and humans' greatest enemy, poachers. There is the bushman guide who walked over 20km through the night with an inexperienced young girl, successfully handling an attack by a hyena, avoiding elephants and finding shelter and sustenance. Another very young guide used a hugely unorthodox and personally dangerous technique to rescue a guest literally from the jaws of death. Sadly, the real African bush is shrinking in size and is under serious threat from the increasingly populated and developing modern world. Some may be able to visit these precious remnants in person but this book provides a window into the specialized field of walking safaris for the armchair reader, the seasoned world traveller and even a stimulating reminder for those who have done it before. Whether you are an armchair explorer or an old Africa Hand there is drama, excitement and even laughter: they are all here.

In the following write up I have recreated my experiences and adventures covering safaris over a dozen year period ranging from the Cape to the Caprivi in discovering Africa . It's a story that tries to capture the feel of safari, the smells, the sounds, and sights one experiences in the African bush. Despite all the game taken and the travel to remote and exotic locations, it was the experiences, the adventure, and most of all the memories created by the journeys that were the real essence of what an African hunt is all about. Someone once suggested that I should write a book about my safari adventures and my love affair with Africa. Well, I have. I take you along on my hunting adventures and experiences, some serious and some humorous, ranging from a charging angry 12,000 pound elephant to a battle with a little 30 pound bullet proof sharpes grysbok. Those who have hunted in Africa have many memories of their own from safari. In the following I share my memories so that both the African safari veteran and someone who is still dreaming of going on safari can share in my hunting experiences and the memories I have collected. The book is not just about shooting but it’s about experiencing the feeling of hunting wild animals on their own turf, the unexpected events, and the dangers in the thick bush going face to face with a dangerous animal that can quickly turn the table making you the hunted, and to test yourself when a tough situation arises. But, most importantly, it’s about collecting memories.

Southern African mammals made simple enables users to distinguish between commonly confused mammals by applying the breakthrough methodology that made Southern African LBJs made simple so hugely popular. The simple three-step system allows for quick and certain identification of mammals in the field. For each species featured, the book gives: • range maps • full-colour illustrations and photographs • key identification pointers, and • concise text describing height, weight, habits and habitat. Distinctive and iconic animals are included, but the particular value of this book lies in making separation of the more challenging species possible, such as antelope, mongooses, genets, primates and many more. It will appeal to both local and foreign visitors to our game parks.

The African lion (Panthera leo), long celebrated as the king of beasts, faces unprecedented challenges in the wild today. Loss of habitat through the expansion of human activity increasingly restricts the lion to game reserves and national parks, while diseases such as bovine tuberculosis pose a threat to the health of lion prides. Over a period of two years, Roger and Pat de la Harpe have documented wild lions of South Africa, and the result is a superbly photographed and engagingly written tribute to this often misunderstood predator. In Search of the African Lion enters the complex world of the lion, describing pride dynamics, hunting patterns, the reproductive cycle and interactions with human communities. The book focuses on four main areas: the Kalahari, the Madikwe/Mapungubwe area, the Greater Kruger National Park and Northern Zululand -each with its own problems, challenges and opportunities. In addition, the authors highlight the important work done by game rangers, wildlife managers and scientific researchers in understanding the lion and in protecting existing populations. The In Search of... series focuses on the plight of threatened and endangered species. Also available by the same authors: In Search of the African Wild Dog.

"Wild West Adventures in the Great African Bush" by David Robert Dalton (with contributions by Mike, Trevor & Garth Dalton) Embark on Wild West Adventures in the Great African Bush with author David Robert Dalton, who takes you to the African bush in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Inspired by his and his brothers fond memories of growing up in the little copper mining town of Messina (now called Musina) in South Africa, with written contributions from his three elder brothers, he pens a wacky, side-splitting tale of his adventures growing up in the little bushveld town. Set in the African bushveld (a.k.a. the Great Arizona Desert), the three elder Dalton cowpokes are members of a gang dubbed the Messina Dalton Gang, after the infamous Wild West Dalton Gang, who roar around on their two-wheeler steeds and talk in tough Western jargon. The youngest Dalton cowpoke, six-year-old, David, calls himself Gunslinger and his main ambition in life is to become a recognized member of the gang. Together with his little African Pawnee sidekick-hombre, Tokoloshie-Two-Feathers, and his three-legged Jack Russell dog, Jock, Gunslinger tries hard to impress, but continually messes up. The story, told in a light-hearted tongue-in-cheek fashion, as told through the fertile imagination of a six-year-old boy, but is written for adults. Theres a delightful array of wacky small-town characters that help the story come alive, making you feel part of it. Theres the delicious Danish Tart, who runs the Mine Rec Club bar, Speedy, the towns beefy Harley-riding policeman, Paparazzo, the long-nosed Italian crime reporter, Frank&Earnest (the same person!), the hip Holy father, the disapproving Dominee, Mrs Bogey, the Mine Managers snooty wife, and the gangs all-suffering parents, the Old Man and Daisy-Anne, who all contribute to the hilarity! Dredging up ones own childhood memories, its a wonderful nostalgic tale to touch the hearts of all ages! Its so darned funny; itll have you laughing out loud! A charming and endearing must-read story for all ages! I simple loved it! Brenda George, author of Falling Leaves and Mountain Ashes. I warmed to this delightful and endearing book a unique African TO-KILL-A-MOCKINGBIRD look into the mind of a child of those nostalgic times. The Sound Of The String is the winner of the 2012 NABE Pinnacle Award for Best Adventure Novel. Set in the beauty of the African bush, Gordon Bradford's journey ushers him to the emotional and spiritual reckonings of both people and animals. Men and women will share the insight, build from its lessons, good and bad, and will be closer from the triumphs and failures of the characters. With a handmade longbow and a duffle bag Gordon discovers Africa...and more. His first safari leads to more as his spiritual connection with the land, people, and wildlife evolves. He discovers ethereal connections with the animals he pursues and learns from their perspectives the balance of the bushveld, for predator and prey. Gordon is mentored by the sage wisdom of Moses, an elderly black man whose early years were spent in racially torn South Africa. He shares in the lives of the people in a remote bush camp and helps as they defend themselves from baboons, poachers, and an angry mob from a neighboring village that attack the camp. His friendship builds with his guide and Professional Hunter, Lucas, while finding he is falling in love with Lucas' wife, Lise. Sabotage and subterfuge between Gordon and Lucas is hidden behind their professional and personal relationships as they attempt their most dangerous hunt together for Cape buffalo. During the hunt there is a touching story of the last days of Dagga Boy, an old Cape buffalo, as he is cast from his herd. He travels only with his guardian, Askari, and passes his life's lessons to the young bull as they navigate the dangers of the bushveld to find water and stay alive. The buffalo and hunters find themselves at the same water hole for a thrilling end which leaves one of them dead, one desperately alone, and the others spinning in clouds of their own conspiracy. As lies are exposed, lives are left in tatters. The Sound of the String captures the setting and appeals to the senses. It summons the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touch of Africa. It brings its readers into the bushveld and leaves them immersed.
