nesus, Armenia, and Georgia have largely profited from the experience acquired in the study of the large events of the early 1980s. The Mediterranean region is not only the site of shallow dispersed seismic activity, it is also the site of localized intermediate depth seismic activity, and of some rare deeper events. Active subduc tion is clearly at the origin of Greek intermediate depth seismicity, while the deep activity under Calabria and the Vrancea region in Romania is clearly related to downgoing slabs that have long remained active after the arrest of subduction. The origin of the intermediate and very deep seismicity below Spain is a considerably more complex problem. Several possible explanations of the intermediate depth activity to about 110 km have been proposed, but the origin of the deep (650 km) events studied by BURFORN et a1. remains a mystery since this is the only source of deep activity that is not related in an obvious way to a subduction zone. The problem of seismic source mechanism and seismotectonics cannot be completely separated from that of the mechanical origin of earthquakes. Recent work on this subject has revealed the intimate relation between fault geometry, as observed by field geologists, and the results of inversion of source process from seismic data in the far-field or in the near-field.

Seismotectonics Of The East Mediterranean Red Sea Region written by Zakaria Hamimi and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-06-03 with Science categories.
This volume is considered as a unique book outlining new advances in seismotectonic research of the East Mediterranean-Red Sea Region (EMRSR). The dedicated chapters will outline the region in terms of tectonic segmentation, kinematics, and possible causes of it. It will provide state of art overview along-strike variations in geometry and behavior of faulting, jog characteristics of the active tectonic zones, analysis of earthquake clustering features, crustal deformation, constraining crustal velocity fields, relationship between strain rate and seismicity, paleoseismology, as well as global and regional seismicity. There will be specific topics within the book dedicated to the probabilistic seismic-hazard assessment of the EMRSR including its crustal stress field evolution and its implications for fault mechanics, earthquake source parameters and moment tensors, and description of double-coupled earthquake focal mechanism. Also, earthquake-induced deformational structures focusing on afterslip and spontaneous aseismic slip processes will provide a complete picture for the reader about this fascinating active region. Sections documenting the stress field variations and kinematics for diffuse microseismicity will also be developed. Other cutting edge research, such as progressive failure, spatiotemporal characteristics of seismicity that depends on accurate earthquake locations, as well as relationship of global distribution to earthquake-source geometry and tectonic origin provides up to date information within the EMRSR realm. The significance of the ambient noise level and site characterization specific to EMRSR and congruence and incongruence of active tectonic zones with normal plate kinematics will be shown in illustrative sections of this new book. The book also will explore the potential relationship of seismotectonics to sustainable development as a key societal aspect of seismotectonic research in an active convergent plate margin region such as the EMRSR.

The 1755 earthquake and tsunami were influential not only in Portugal but in all European and North African countries where the devastating effects were felt. The entire world was deeply impressed and the discussion of its causes generated a large amount of scientific and metaphysical speculation. It inspired philosophers, poets and writers. The socio-economic consequences of the event were great and affected the future organization and development of Portugal. The possibility of a similar occurence urges society and the scientific community to reflect on its lessons. Audience This work is of interest to experts in seismology, earthquake engineering, civil protection, urban planning and it is a reference book for doctoral students.

The following four papers deal with the seismicity and seismotectonic of the region. Carrilho et al. present the first results of GEOALGAR, a project initiated in 2000 to monitor the seismic activity in the Algarve region (southern Portugal). In this paper results of the relocation of epicenters and determination of fault plane solutions are presented. The new epicentral locations show a more organized spatial distribution which could indicate a possible correlation with some known tectonic features. Fault plane solutions are predominantly of strike-slip motion consistent with a horizontal compression in the NW-SE to NNW-SSE direction. The paper by Yelles-Chaouche et al. presents a detailed study of the 22 December, 1999 earthquake at Ain Temouchent (northwest Algeria) of magnitude 5. 7. The earthquake caused serious damage in the town of Ain Teemouchent with 25 casualties and 25000 people left homeless. Intensity map, surface features and the focal mechanism, based on wave form analysis, are shown. The mechanism corresponds to reverse fault motion with planes striking NNE-SSW resulting from horizontal compression in the NW-SE direction. This corresponds to the general mechanism found for Algeria earthquakes. Buforn et al. present a study of the characteristics of the plate boundary between Africa and Iberia, from west of Cape San Vicente to Algeria, using seismicity and source mechanism data. The region is divided into three areas which manifest different characteristics.

"The Mediterranean region and Asia provide a natural laboratory to investigate the driving forces of continental tectonics in an ongoing collisional orogen and the crustal and mantle response to various modes of deformation associated with plate boundary processes. The multidisciplinary research efforts in this region over the last fifteen years have produced a wealth of new data to better understand the interplay and feedback mechanisms between crustal and mantle processes and the dynamic landscape evolution in a complexly deforming area. A number of discrete collisional events between the Gondwana-derived continental fragments (i.e., Adria, Pelagonia, Arabia, India) and Eurasia controlled the geodynamics of the Mediterranean region and Asia during the late Mesozoic and Cenozoic. This book is a collection of research papers, presenting new data, interpretations, and syntheses on various aspects of the collision-induced tectonic, magmatic, metamorphic, and geomorphic processes that have affected the evolution of this orogenic belt. It should help us better understand the mode and nature of tectonic and magmatic processes and crustal evolution in active collision zones, and the distribution and causes of seismic and volcanic events and their impact on landscape evolution."--Publisher's website.

The title perfectly describes the content and purpose of the book. The language used in the presentation is appropriate and conforms to contemporary scientific terminology. The structure of the text is harmoniously justified and includes 54 figures, 33 tables and 199 references, in 99 pages. Authors sustain the idea of St. Francis of Assisi (Italy, ¿?-1226): “La verdadera enseñanza que transmitimos es lo que vivimos; y somos buenos predicadores cuando ponemos en práctica lo que decimos”. For the first time, a seismotectonic model for Central America is proposed and argued, subdividing it into two Seismotectonic Provinces: America Central I (El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua) and America Central II (Costa Rica and Panama). Significant differences appear in these regions with respect to the existing models in Chile, México and Peru; where Central America's lower hazard is highlighted. This is very important at the time of making hazard and risk estimates, especially when the limited monetary resources of Central American countries are known. The authors undertook an extensive review of all the materials available to them, and the use of several bibliography (in different languages) reflected in the book demonstrates it. An element of consideration has been the argumentation about the fragmentation of active structures, the transmission of stresses and the corresponding deformations; as well as the hierarchy of all tectonic elements. Highlights the novel proposal of a set of active tectonic knots in Central America, and Nicaragua in particular. In this sense, in the vicinity of the Managua City, a knot is defined that justifies its unique seismic activity. It is hoped, mainly, in Nicaragua, and that it will allow them to question, with critical eyes and minds, the dogmas and models that are accepted by the majority of the scientific community. In this regard, the following reasoning is given: “Cualquier ayuda innecesaria es un obstáculo para el desarrollo” (María Tecla Artemisa Montessori/ Italy, 1870-Netherlands, 1952). Finally, the use of several languages for the presentation of the work and the different covers is commendable. This should be an incentive for the new generations [“The limits of my language are the limits of my world” (Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgensteine/ Austria, 1889-United Kingdom, 1951)].
