Changes in housing, furnishings, clothing and even cooking utensils can all reveal much about the economy and societies of Ireland. Between 1500 and 2000, markets, fairs, shops and exhibitions increased the availability and range of goods. This guide surveys some of the work being done on the subject. It also offers help in how to approach the topic, in identifying the types of sources likely to be most useful--wills, inventories, advertisements, surviving artifacts--and in locating them.--From publisher's description.

Irish Art written by Bruce Arnold and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989-09-01 with categories.

Irish art of the early Christian era is justly celebrated. So, too, are the individual contributions of artists such as Jack B. Yeats. What is perhaps less widely accepted is the existence of a continuing and developing tradition of Irish art from the earliest times to the present day. Bruce Arnold traces the complex evolution of Irish art through three millennia, showing how it has drawn on Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, Norman, Mediterranean and other diverse sources. As the story unfolds, Arnold repatriates Irish artists who are frequently regarded as 'English'--including William Mulready, Daniel Maclise and James Barry--and shows how Irish painting and sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, metalwork and architecture together form a rich and distinctive cultural heritage.

"This collection of essays discusses how the British empire resonates in a huge array of visual culture in Ireland from the late eighteenth century to the middle of the twentieth. The book is about the way empire has pervaded and continues to pervade Irish art and visual culture. The collection of essays expands the analysis of things visual in terms of Ireland and the British empire to include a broad range of cultural matter: art exhibitions, museums and their displays, architecture, photography, illustrated books, fashion, public and private performances and entertainments, as well as paintings, sculpture, prints and book illustration. The essays only touch on some of the issues that need to be discussed in relation to Ireland and the visual culture of imperialism, but it is hoped that this volume will spark others to investigate the topic and thus greatly expand Irish visual historiography"--

Cultural Identities And The Aesthetics Of Britishness written by Dana Arnold and has been published by Manchester University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-07-02 with History categories.

This book examines British imperial, colonial and postcolonial national identities within their political and social contexts. By considering the export, adoption and creation of such cultural identities, these essays show how nationhood and nationalism are self-consciously defined tools designed to focus and inspire loyalty. The contributors present these ideas with particular reference to English cultural identity and its interaction with the "Empire". They examine the national, imperial and colonial aesthetic--how architecture, landscape, painting, sculpture and literature were used, appropriated and re-appropriated in the furtherance of social and political agendas, and how this impacted on the making of "Britishness" in all its complexities. It is demonstrated that not only did the dominant aesthetic culture reinforce the dominant political and social ideology, it also re-presented and re-constructed the notion of British national identity.
