The Naval War in South African Waters, 1939-1945 provides a critical reappraisal of the naval war waged in South African waters during the Second World War. The book investigates this broad topic by focussing on several interrelated aspects such as: the wartime strategic importance of South African waters; the rival Axis and Allied naval strategies in the southern oceans; the development of the South African coastal defence system; the full extent of the Axis naval operations in the southern oceans; the naval intelligence war; and, finally, the antisubmarine war waged in South African waters. Based on extensive archival research in South Africa and the United Kingdom, and supplemented by a wealth of secondary material, the book introduces a fresh, in-depth discussion on a largely forgotten episode of South African military history.

This dictionary covers the complex and costly conflict that began when Germany, ruled by Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, invaded neighboring Poland on 1 September 1939; and concluded when Germany surrendered on 7–9 May 1945, leaving much of the European continent in ruins and its population devastated. The war against Germany, Italy, and the other European Axis members was fought primarily in Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, East and North Africa, and the Atlantic Ocean. The Axis powers were defeated by the Allies, led by the “Grand Alliance” of Great Britain, the United States, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The Historical Dictionary of World War II: The War against Germany and Italy relates the history of this war through a chronology, an introductory essay, maps and photos, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has more than 300 cross-referenced entries on the countries and geographical areas involved in the war, as well as the nations remaining neutral; wartime alliances and conferences; significant civilian and military leaders; and major ground, naval, and air operations. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about World War II.

The History Of Geophysics In Southern Africa written by Johan H de Beer and has been published by AFRICAN SUN MeDIA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-01-25 with Science categories.

Geophysics is a comparatively young science which only evolved as a distinct discipline during the 19th century. However, its phenomena (like earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and lightning) had been objects of fear, curiosity and speculation since ancient times. In this book, Johan de Beer and his research team reveal that geophysical activity in South Africa can be traced back to as early as 1488. This is a truly astonishing revelation which deserves to be firmly entrenched as part of the country?s proud history. The book also discusses the history and formation of South African geophysical institutions that made a huge and seldom acknowledged contribution to the technological development of southern Africa.

Radar was the outcome of research during the mid- and late-1930s by scientists and engineers in eight countries: United States, Great Britain, Germany, Holland, France, Italy, USSR, and Japan. Each country believed that this was its own development and held the technology in highest secrecy. Great Britain gave the basics to four advanced Commonwealth nations: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa, and indigenous systems emerged in each before WWII. Hungary independently developed its own system during the war. This book provides an account of the developments, including timelines, in each of the 13 countries. It is primarily intended for readers with a general interest in the history of technology. It is neither "academic" (there are no footnotes) nor technically detailed (only one equation and no diagrams). However, about 450 individuals are noted, many with brief bios. In reviewing draft material, the late historian Louis Brown, author of A Radar History of World War II, commented that it was "free of the great radar myths that still fill many accounts: 'Before Rad Lab there was nothing.' 'We invented it in Britain and everyone copied it from us.' 'German radar was second rate and the Japanese did not have any.' "
