As the granddaughter of a cattle rancher, twenty-one-year-old visual artist Alexandra Mackenzie knows full well how challenging it can be to carve a living out of prairie dust and gopher holes, but when she goes against her grandfather’s wishes and joins a Park’s Canada survey crew that’s examining options for a possible expansion of the Grassland Parks—hoping to expand her portfolio with spectacular prairie vistas—she had no idea just how strong the pushback would be from the area’s less-stable locals, as well as the families who’ve worked the land for generations. Local ranch hand Ryerson Coderre comes from just such a family and is no fan of expansion himself, but he can see the inevitability of it and the wisdom of working with the government rather than against it. Still, as tensions between the survey teams and the locals mount to dangerous levels, he finds himself the only person available to look out for the beautiful young surveyor. He can’t help but wish for a return to simpler times ... especially when local secrets, long since buried, begin inching their way closer to the surface. Alex’s long-term goal is earning a highly sought after scholarship to study art in Paris on the line, while Rye is caught between loyalty to his family and an undeniable fascination with the lovely outsider. They both have a lot to lose—not only their hearts but if they aren’t careful ... their lives as well.

Herding cattle from horseback has been a tradition in northern Mexico and the American West since the Spanish colonial era. The first mounted herders were the Mexican vaqueros, expert horsemen who developed the skills to work cattle in the brush country and deserts of the Southwestern borderlands. From them, Texas cowboys learned the trade, evolving their own unique culture that spread across the Southwest and Great Plains. The buckaroos of the Great Basin west of the Rockies trace their origin to the vaqueros, with influence along the way from the cowboys, though they, too, have ways and customs distinctly their own. In this book, three long-time students of the American West describe the history, working practices, and folk culture of vaqueros, cowboys, and buckaroos. They draw on historical records, contemporary interviews, and numerous photographs to show what makes each group of mounted herders distinctive in terms of working methods, gear, dress, customs, and speech. They also highlight the many common traits of all three groups. This comparative look at vaqueros, cowboys, and buckaroos brings the mythical image of the American cowboy into focus and detail and honors the regional and national variations. It will be an essential resource for anyone who would know or portray the cowboy—readers, writers, songwriters, and actors among them.

The west gave us our best-loved national hero, the cowboy. Cowboy country is about this proud man on horseback and his equally colorful employer, the rancher, who have both played such a large part in putting food on America's table. The text carries the reader back 200 years to a string of ranchos along the California coastline, stocked with semi-wild longhorns and operated by the Spanish settlers. It also tells of the cattle drives to California after the gold rush of 1849 involving 300,000 head. Some of these trail routes were as long as 2,000 miles and took over six months to complete. The story continues into the San Joaquin Valley and gives the history of early ranches, including the Miller and Lux Ranch, Kern County Land Company, and the Tejon Ranch, which has continued to be one of California's leading ranches since 1859. Much of Cowboy country takes place on the author's homerange, the Kern River Valley, over the past 110 years.

In this slim, lively book our foremost historian of country music recalls the lost worlds of pioneering fiddlers and pickers, balladeers and yodelers. As he looks at "hillbilly" music's pre-commercial era and its early popular growth through radio and recordings, Bill C. Malone shows us that it was a product not only of the British Isles but of diverse African, German, Spanish, French, and Mexican influences.
