Slim Silver, a top hand, aims to develop a large ranch of his own in the dry country of northeastern Wyoming. Into this area comes a young recent University of Chicago graduate, Jim Carlson. Carlson plans to take a break on his Uncle's homestead, before selecting his objectives for life. However, Carlson is asked to take care of his Uncle John's homestead for the summer, so that his uncle can take his family back east for a while to an easier life, and also earn some needed money. As observed by Jim Carlson, Slim's friendship with a new western couple, the Blanchards (particularly Teresa Blanchard), leads Slim to oppose the major rancher in the area, Butch Hogan, who wants the water from a spring on the Blanchard homestead. Complicating the interactions, Slim also works off and on as one of Hogan's cow hands. Hogan owns the Lazy Bear Lodge Ranch, by far the largest ranch in the area. The Carlson homestead is just across the Belle Fourche River from the Hogan spread and northeast of the Blanchard's homestead as well as Slim's. As such Carlson is in the middle of the story. In this dry country, south of the Bear Lodge Mountains of Wyoming, water is the main issue. Hogan brings in a sheep herd which causes him to be increasingly short of water. The advantage of sheep is that, unlike cows, they will eat almost anything, but they can also strip the country almost bare. As the pressure for water increases, the Blanchards as well as two Lazy Bear Lodge hands, are murdered. Initial evidence points to Slim as the murderer. Slim is indicted and almost lynched, before Jim Carlson and Fred Hardy, Butch's tough but honest foreman, see that justice is finally realized. At the end, Carlson has grown from a naive college graduate to a real western man who ends up settling in the country south of the Bear Lodge. Slim is acquitted, but because of all the events, is never the same.

Rising from the grassy floor of the Great Plains of western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming are the Black Hills, home of legend and mystery. Known to the Lakota Indians as Paha Sapa, these hills include the Bear Lodge Mountains and Devils Tower-Mato Tipila, or Bear Lodge. The work read at the Bearlodge Writers' table draws not only from this ancient landscape, but reaches beyond it around the nation, around the world, and into fantasy. The Bearlodge Writers (BLW) have been meeting twice a month in Sundance, Wyoming, since 1979. The Hills have drawn us from different directions, and we come from different vocations, as well. But we are all writers and aspire to contribute to the world of literature. We encourage and support one another in our writing endeavors, help each other improve our work, share information, and provide workshops and writing retreats. By drawing on the fine-tuned balance within the group, and with deep respect for one another's work, we produce poetry, essays, articles, columns, novels, nonfiction books, and short stories. Our published work ripples outward-regionally, nationally, internationally. Here, in the shadow of the Bear Lodge, we live close to the elements, letting nature and the land nurture us and settle into our bones. Through the pleasure and power of words, we discover joy, beauty, sanity and serenity, guidance, deep connection . . . and sometimes triumph. Chocolate and red pens! Bear Lodge writers wield both with good cheer and skill as they support each other in their writing. Meeting monthly for more than forty years, members of Bear Lodge Writers have been widely published, spreading their work to readers everywhere. In these pages you will find writing "from Tiananmen to Vilnius," from Maine to the Medicine Bow, deep as roots can burrow and high as mountains and eagles can soar. Their voices echo and sing, piercing the fog of our daily lives, bringing new hymns of entertainment, reflection, grief, healing, and contentment. Gaydell Collier, one of the group's founders, to whom this collection is dedicated, would be proud. Add Spirit of the Bear Lodge to your library; read it with gratitude, joy, and hope. -Linda M. Hasselstrom, Gathering from the Grassland, High Plains Press, and other titles. Dedicated to Gaydell Collier, a founding member of Bearlodge Writers, Spirit of the Bear: A Bearlodge Writers Anthology is a collaboratively-edited anthology that is both gracefully and thoughtfully organized-filled with carefully selected and well-crafted pieces. In richly detailed imagery and finely-wrought language, the works in this anthology reveal a strong connection to questions of place and community. A testament to writing community and writing in community, this book brings to beautiful fruition the presence, talent, collaboration, and craft of Bearlodge Writers. This anthology is a celebration of individual voices working cooperatively to further their writerly talents in unison, and it is a powerful and engaging collection. -Lee Ann Roripaugh, Author of Tsunami vs. the Fukushima 50

Yellow Bear Lodge is a romantic novel set in Montana and laced together with soft sex, violence, humor, and tall tales. The setting is a dude ranch in the Montana Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness forty-two miles from the closest town. The scenery is spectacular and the abundance of beauty and wildlife frames the adventures of the diverse ranch crew and the local populace they encounter. An ancient Indian folktale about a menacing yellow grizzly bear in this valley is entwined with the rampaging descendent of that magnificent creature that delivers Montana justice in an engaging climax. *** A native of Helena, Montana, BRYANT BLEWETT holds a Montana State University degree in Business, and a Master of Taxation from Golden Gate University in San Francisco. He graduated from Stanford's Graduate School of Business, Executive Program, in 1986 and earned his CPA in 1972. He spent twenty-two years with The Clorox Company as the head of their Tax Department. A fourth generation northern Californian, ELLEN MARSHALL earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance and Dramatic Art from the University of California, Berkeley in 1974. After a seventeen year career in retail banking with First Interstate Bank of California, she branched out into residential real estate. She and Bryant are married and live in Alameda, California during the winter months. Summer and fall finds them high up in the mountains at their dude ranch, Hawley Mountain Guest Ranch, south of McLeod, Montana which they help manage with partners, Ron and Phyllis Jarrett.

Hundreds of stratigraphic, lithographic, remote-sensing and core sample examples are presented, particularly of areas likely to host Carlin-type gold deposits. The two volumes contain a wealth of data on specifically named mines, as well as technical information on high-potential areas for exploration. The book is profusely illustrated with full-color maps, photographs and charts for geology and mining engineering. A searchable CD accompanies the book and includes the full text of papers from the printed book, as well as abstracts and information from poster sessions not found in the printed book. Chapters in the text are fully refereed versions of presentations originally delivered at a symposium supported by the Geological Society of Nevada, along with the United States Geological Survey, Society of Economic Geologists and the Nevada Bureau of Mines.
