LandWise Inc. was contracted by the Integrated Resource Management Branch of Alberta Environment in October 2002, to assist in developing a method to extend the known range site and plant community information to all of southern Alberta except the Rocky Mountain Natural Region, including the Montane, Sub-Alpine and Alpine Natural Subregions. A map showing the aerial extent of each ecological range site was prepared by linking ecological range sites and their associated reference plant communities to soil and landscape information in the Agriculture Region of Alberta Soil Information Database (AGRASID. The resulting Geographic Information System (GIS) database was summarized so that the total area of each ecological range site and potential plant community within each SCA could be determined. Included are the links betwen AGRASID, reference plant communities and ecological range sites. The document also contains information on AGRASID and other information used for rule building, refinements of the map product, as well as specific enhancements to AGRASID for the purposes of this project.--Includes text from document.

This working paper sets out forty of the methods/processes that can be utilized when designing the overall Southern Alberta Landscapes (SAL) Strategy Development Project. It is not anticipated that all of these methods will be used. Rather, the actual methods to be utilized during the SAL Strategy Development Project will be identified as the project is designed. The intention at this point is to provide enough information about each method to allow all members of the Total Southern Alberta Landscapes Team (TSALT) and others to be able to think creatively about which methods might best be used and when, in order to achieve the desired results.--Includes text from document.

The Alberta Government has initiated a study called the Southern Alberta Landscapes: meeting the challenges ahead (SAL) to look at social, economic, and environmental information for southern Alberta, in order to take stock of the situation and assess the consequences of potential changes. The purpose is to identify the issues that need to be addressed to ensure a sustainable future. This report is an overview of the economic and demographic conditions including population numbers and distribution, employment in the region's various economic sectors, and economic activity in the region. Historical trends for some information have been identified. Quality of life measures have also been addressed to determine how the regional population is faring as compared to Alberta's and Canada's populations. Economic initiatives by the provincial government are highlighted to assist in identifying economic incentives in the southern region.

Southern Alberta Landscapes: Meeting the Challenges Ahead (SAL) was launched in 2002 as a cross-Ministry, inter-governmental, strategic planning initiative to examine sustainable development issues in southern Alberta. The focus of SAL is on understanding the complexity of the landscape and the effects of human activities on environmental quality. The project looks at the cumulative effects of changes in land use, resource demands, population increases and climate change over the next 50 years and how those changes affect the sustainability of the environment. This document reports on the computer modelling tools used for the economic and cumulative effects analysis described here, explains footprint and fragmentation analysis, discusses modelling uncertainty and spatial vs. non-spatial modelling issues relevant to the project, gives a brief description of the landscape, population, and economy of the study area, describes a base case and a "what-if" scenario for growing the population and economy 50 years into the future, and discusses the results including projected impacts to the economy and to the landscape.--Includes text from document.

"This report was compiled to describe the overall sectoral characteristics and trends in economic activity in southern Alberta, to identify key drivers that may determine the future direction of the economy, and to give a general description of the types of environmental impacts that might be expected as a result of economic development in key sectors. Data included in this report were collected through a document and literature review and through interviews with social and environmental scientists, economists, industry representatives, and government officials."--Document.

As part of the regional resource overview for Southern Alberta Landscapes: Meeting the Challenges Ahead (SAL), Jim Schieck facilitated obtaining input from wildlife professionals throughout Alberta and the other prairie provinces. More than 40 biologists from the provincial government, federal government, universities, consulting organizations, and other organizations participated in a series of 15 meetings/workshops. In these discussions the researchers: 1) determined which of species and species groups should be modeled in the Alberta Landscape Cumulative Effects Simulator (ALCES) for SAL; 2) decided how modeling of species and species groups should be conducted in ALCES; and 3) used a Delphi (or expert opinion) process to reach consensus on the parameters and coefficients for those parameters that would be included in the ALCES models. To highlight some of the potential changes to wildlife that may be caused by increased human activity and a larger human footprint in the SAL study area, a series of "flagship" species and species groups were chosen. These species and species groups were: a) from a wide diversity of habitats, b) from a diversity of taxonomic groups, c) easily recognized by the general public, d) known to have diverse resource needs, e) thought to have great potential to be affected by predicted changes in the SAL study area, and e) could be modeled well in ALCES. The four species chosen for modeling were ferruginous hawk, prairie rattlesnake, sharp-tailed grouse, and grizzly bear.--Includes text from document.

The purpose of the workshop was to determine how the Alberta Landscape Cumulative Effects Simulator (ALCES) should model effects of non-native plant species invasion from a variety of land use footprints into native vegetation in southern Alberta. Specific objectives included: to review current information on invasion of non-native plants into native vegetation types defined in ALCES; to define one or more groups of invasive non-native plant species which should be modeled in ALCES; to identify land use footprints defined in ALCES that create opportunities for invasion of non-native plants into native vegetation types; and for each invasive species group, define how ALCES should model invasion from each land use footprint into each native vegetation type.--Includes text from document.
