The blood that flows through his veins has coursed' in those of artists, poets, musicians, and royal personages. Very early in life Sidney Lanier Showed a pas sion for reading, a talent and fondness for music, and when a mere lad be delighted in forming amateur orchestras of children. Having a keen sense of humor, he often kept the family amused by his mimicry, and later be utilized this faculty of observation in his poems. Excerpt from The South in Prose and Poetry For a long time the literature of the South was neglected, or, perhaps, it is nearer the truth to say that it was ignored. Thomas Nelson Page, in a speech some years ago, stated that the rest of the world looked upon the South as a section of the United States without a literature, and the Encyclopaedia Britannica, an authority throughout the world, published an arraignment far more scathing than this. We of the South have no one to blame for this condition of affairs but ourselves. It is only natural that, if we did not seem to place a proper value upon our own writers, no other section was going to herald their fame except where the overwhelming force of genius compelled it. We can but take the form of the mold in which we are cast. Our range of vision is limited by our horizon, and unless that horizon is lifted our field of vision will always remain the same. To those whose knowledge of American literature has been acquired merely from text-books written by men who have given scant space to the authors of the South, it is, in spite of its truth, an astonishing fact that Simms ranks only second to Hawthorne; that Poe surpasses all the other of our poets; that Calhoun was our most profound logician, and Maury the greatest American scientist of his day. Excerpt from Southern Life in Southern Literature: Selections of Representative Prose and Poetry In this book I have endeavored to represent as adequately as might be possible within the limits of a volume of moderate size the work of the more important Southern writers. My attempt has been not merely to show the value of literary effort in the South as absolute achievement but also to emphasize its importance as a record of Southern life and character. Taking literature in the stricter sense of fiction, essay, and poetry, I have omitted the historians, the biographers, and the political writers so frequently used to swell the bulk of Southern literature. In poetry I have endeavored to select poems which have attained some measure of general critical approval. But in some instances, especially in the Civil War poetry, I have included poems obviously without much literary merit because they were household poems of an older generation and embodied in a characteristic way the traditions and spirit of the people who loved them. For much the same reason I have included a few specimens of the vanishing survivals of old English ballads to the presence of which in the South attention has lately been turned. In the case of the older prose writers, I have drawn upon a very limited number of the most significant works. As most of these were out of print or difficult to secure, I have tried to give a general idea of each by means of liberal excerpts and suitable summaries.
