From the renowned Tuskegee Institute of Alabama, this classic collection of heritage recipes and anecdotes features more than two hundred mouthwatering African American dishes with pictorial accounts, personal vignettes, and poetry. All Stevie Choi ever wanted was a cozy life in suburbia—a loving husband, adorable kids, a dog. That simple dream shattered into a million pieces when she was only sixteen. She’s spent the years since trying to outrun the pain and make something of herself, if only to prove to her estranged family that she’s happy and successful—even though she’s secretly yearning for another chance at love. If only she believed she deserved it . . . So Stevie “dates” new countries, leaving her Utah home-base to circle the globe, from Paris to Cairo to Cabo San Lucas, curating a gorgeous Instagram feed—while spending every New Year alone. Then one frigid January day in Rome she meets Paulo. He would be her perfect match—if they weren’t separated by continents and obligations. Unable to say goodbye, they agree that if they’re both single at thirty-three, they’ll marry each other. . . . And then January of their thirty-third rolls around and suddenly it’s up to Stevie to choose happiness . . . Sparkling with hope, All Roads Lead to Rome soulfully examines all the ways a tender heart can be broken—and how faith in the future—and in oneself—can make it whole again . . .

Now updated with previously unpublished profiles and recipes, this classic heritage cookbook celebrates the food and history of the largest, historically Black educational complex in the world – the 6 schools of the Atlanta University Center Consortium – through a collection of remembrances, photos, proverbs, and more than 200 recipes. A NAACP Image Award Finalist! Acclaimed for historical cookbooks such as The African American Heritage Cookbook, Carolyn Quick Tillery presents a sumptuous feast in this classic of recipes and remembrances that bring mouthwatering connections to our Black heritage in a celebration of personal and collective history through archival photographs and hundreds of traditional and modern recipes. Southern Homecoming Traditions focuses on the food and history of one of America’s most influential institutions, the Atlanta University Center Consortium, an affiliation of six schools—Morehouse, Spelman and Morris Brown Colleges, Clark-Atlanta University, Interdenominational Theological Center, and Morehouse School of Medicine—that constitute the largest, historically Black educational complex in the world. For more than a century, these schools have gathered in one place the best and brightest of Black America. The region also brought us a memorable cuisine that evokes all the tastes and flavors of a Southern home. From traditional dishes that are making a welcome comeback (Chicken and Waffles), to modern dishes and drinks (Jamaican Chicken, Georgia Peach Champagne Punch), to “forgotten soul food recipes” that are in danger of being lost forever (Smoked Turkey Neck and Collard Greens, “Chitlins” and Hog Maws), these recipes capture the aromas and emotions of the black experience, past and present. Southern Homecoming Traditions pays tribute to Black Americans who, instead of waiting for a seat at our nation’s table, enlarged the table and invited those that followed to take a seat. Enhanced by inspiring African proverbs (“Teach a woman and you teach a nation”) and touching remembrances, this is both a food lover’s delight and a joyous living history of Black America’s continuing influence on American cuisine and culture.

Like other Americans, African Americans partake of the general food offerings available in mainstream supermarket chains across the country. Food culture, however, may depend on where they live and their degree of connection to traditions passed down through generations since the time of slavery. Many African Americans celebrate a hybrid identity that incorporates African and New World foodways. The state of African American food culture today is illuminated in depth here for the first time, in the all-important context of understanding the West African origins of most African Americans of today. A historical overview discusses the beginnings of this hybrid food culture when Africans were forcibly removed from their homelands and brought to the United States. Chapter 2 on Major Foods and Ingredients details the particular favorites of what is considered classic African American food. In Chapter 3, Cooking, the African American family of today is shown to be like most other families with busy lives, preparing and eating quick meals during the week and more leisurely meals on the weekend. Special insight is also given on African American chefs. The Typical Meals chapter reflects a largely mainstream diet, with regional and traditional options. Chapter 6, Eating Out, highlights the increasing opportunities for African Americans to dine out, and the attractions of fast meals. The Special Occasions chapter discusses all the pertinent occasions for African Americans to prepare and eat symbolic dishes that reaffirm their identity and culture. Finally, the latest information in traditional African American diet and its health effects brings readers up to date in the Diet and Health chapter. Recipes, photos, chronology, resource guide, and selected bibliography round out the narrative.

This volume of The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture offers a current and authoritative reference to urbanization in the American South from the eighteenth century to the twenty-first, surveying important southern cities individually and examining the various issues that shape patterns of urbanization from a broad regional perspective. Looking beyond the post-World War II era and the emergence of the Sunbelt economy to examine recent and contemporary developments, the 48 thematic essays consider the ongoing remarkable growth of southern urban centers, new immigration patterns (such as the influx of Latinos and the return-migration of many African Americans), booming regional entrepreneurial activities with global reach (such as the rise of the southern banking industry and companies such as CNN in Atlanta and FedEx in Memphis), and mounting challenges that result from these patterns (including population pressure and urban sprawl, aging and deteriorating infrastructure, gentrification, and state and local budget shortfalls). The 31 topical entries focus on individual cities and urban cultural elements, including Mardi Gras, Dollywood, and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Southern folklife is the heart of southern culture. Looking at traditional practices still carried on today as well as at aspects of folklife that are dynamic and emergent, contributors to this volume of The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture examine a broad range of folk traditions. Moving beyond the traditional view of folklore that situates it in historical practice and narrowly defined genres, entries in this volume demonstrate how folklife remains a vital part of communities' self-definitions. Fifty thematic entries address subjects such as car culture, funerals, hip-hop, and powwows. In 56 topical entries, contributors focus on more specific elements of folklife, such as roadside memorials, collegiate stepping, quinceanera celebrations, New Orleans marching bands, and hunting dogs. Together, the entries demonstrate that southern folklife is dynamically alive and everywhere around us, giving meaning to the everyday unfolding of community life.

Southern Beauty written by Elizabeth Bronwyn Boyd and has been published by University of Georgia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-08-15 with Social Science categories.

Southern Beauty explains a curiosity: why a feminine ideal rooted in the nineteenth century continues to enjoy currency well into the twenty-first. Elizabeth Bronwyn Boyd examines how the continuation of certain gender rituals in the American South has served to perpetuate racism, sexism, and classism. In a trio of popular gender rituals—sorority rush, beauty pageants, and the Confederate Pageant of the Natchez (Mississippi) Pilgrimage—young white southern women have readily ditched contemporary modes of dress and comportment for performances of purity, gentility, and deference. Clearly, the ability to “do” white southern womanhood, convincingly and on cue, has remained a valued performance. But why? Based on ethnographic research and more than sixty taped interviews, Southern Beauty goes behind the scenes of the three rituals to explore the motivations and rewards associated with participation. The picture that Boyd paints is not pretty: it is one of southern beauties securing status and sustaining segregation by making nostalgic gestures to the southern past. Boyd also maintains that the audiences for these rituals and pageants have been complicit, unwilling to acknowledge the beauties’ racial work or their investment in it. With its focus on performance, Southern Beauty moves beyond representations to show how femininity in motion—stylized and predictable but ephemeral—has succeeded as an enduring emblem, where other symbols faltered, by failing to draw scrutiny. Continuing to make the moves of region and race even as many Confederate symbols have been retired, the southern beauty has persisted, maintaining power and privilege through consistent performance.
