In 1912, a Congressional committee met to investigate allegations that the Secretary of Agriculture had suppressed a report by J. O. Wright on drainage in the Florida Everglades. The following seven months of committee hearings uncovered a veritable horror-show of corruption, self-dealing, misuse of government personnel and property for private gain, the tarring of reputations in order to protect high-level officials, and outright blackmail within the Department of Agriculture and the state governments of Florida and North Carolina. The "Wright Report Incident" is most commonly understood in its connection to the Everglades, and few histories have included its effects on the North Carolina Pocosin wetland and other coastal plain swamps. This book seeks fills that gap. It details the timeline, intricate politics, and webs of corruption that make up the story of the Wright Incident and, specifically, its connection to land management practices in coastal North Carolina that continue to impact the industries of the state almost 100 years later.

In B. Smith’s Southern Cooking A-Z, she explores the rich and diverse cuisines of the American South—from Cajun to creole, Soul food to “New Southern.” Laced with engaging anecdotes about culture and history, Smith’s recipes equal parts instructive and entertaining. Hers isn’t a cookbook for elaborate dinner parties or calorie counters, but rather a guide for those unafraid to smoke a pig and toss back a few sliders. From Smith’s mouthwatering catfish fingers to her Jambalaya, her Kentucky Burgoo, and the entertaining stories she tells while teaching you her tricks, B. Smith’s Southern Cooking A-Z will show even the most skeptical reader why the Wall Street Journal has hailed her as “One of the most formidable rivals of Martha Stewart.”

Southern Style written by Craig Marriner and has been published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-01 with Fiction categories.

The youth from the old colonies head to London, a mecca for hedonism, dangerous encounters and self-discovery in this vibrant, shocking novel by the award-winning writer of Stonedogs. Craig Marriner’s second novel lifts the lid on the Big OE as his sprawling cast of young Southerners tackle London head on. There’s Lisa from Cape Town, class warrior and part-time drug dealer; Ryan the Aussie, with little to show for two years of overstaying but hangovers and hang-ups; and Alex from Auckland, fresh off the plane, a management graduate with the world at his feet, if he can grow up fast enough. And there’s London itself, a stage that sets no limits on hedonism and personal discovery. The ancient city has never seemed so promising. Or so dangerous. Cockney villains tussle with blacks, establishment toffs tug invisible strings, but newcomers from the East could be the jokers in the pack as old institutions are threatened by the forces of a globalised world. In the midst of it all, the neo-explorers are set to learn just how far from home they really are, how much London has to give, and the price it can demand in return. In this brilliant novel, Marriner further develops the distinctive brand of fiction he introduced in the jaw-dropping Stonedogs. Southern Style rubs philosophy and polemic up against a story that swings from the hilarious to the shocking and every shade in between.

Phoebe Howard, known affectionately as Mrs. Howard to her clients, has a penchant for creating stylish spaces, which has evolved into her own critically acclaimed brand of interior design. Mrs. Howard’s first book features several of her largest design projects and addresses the most common decorating issues and questions her clients and customers ask. The book’s design projects are organized by theme: Inviting, Inspiring, Timeless, Graceful, Tranquil, Casual, and Comfortable—all words that have been used to describe Mrs. Howard’s work and ones that illustrate the many different ways she strives to make her houses look and feel. Cowritten with well-known Southern writer Susan Sully, this gorgeous book epitomizes the grace and elegance of Southern interior design. “A handsome new book . . . Every room, project and vignette featured are beautiful but there are a few images that are simply perfect in my book—timeless and cozy, layered, inviting and lived-in.” —Café Design “Known for her fresh take on traditional style, Phoebe’s work can only be characterized by its timelessness and her mantra to ‘keep it pretty.’ Her work is encapsulated in her first book.” —Women’s Business Daily

This volume celebrates the warmth and easy elegance of traditional Southern architecture and interior design, featuring houses of unpretentious and old-fashioned grace that showcase the talents of the South’s finest design professionals. Comfort and hospitality are words that express the spirit of simple Southern style. Featured in tantalizing photographs is a discerning selection of residences decorated by Bobby McAlpine, Ken Tate, Ryan Gainey, Jackye Lanham, Amelia Handegan, and others. Located in old Southern cities such as Atlanta, Charleston, Savannah, and New Orleans, as well as seaside and mountain retreats, these intimate dwellings are steeped in architectural tradition. The residences profiled illustrate fresh design interpretations of romantic Southern style, such as a New Orleans double-shotgun with a modern all-white palette, a nineteenth-century summer cottage with updated coastal decor, and a Louisiana plantation house with handsome Creole antiques. Two sections, "Pure and Simple" and "Simply Elegant," explore the varied ways that Southerners express their love of comfort and gracious living. Dating from the eighteenth century to the present, the houses featured exemplify historic styles that evolved in response to their natural settings, inviting families to live in harmony with their surroundings. Integrating time-honored lessons of the past, these cozy dwellings also incorporate contemporary design sensibilities, making them especially appealing for today’s lifestyle.
