Parmi ces routes, il y en a six de royales, dont une de premiere classe, qui va de Paris a Geneve, de l'endroit ou les habitants s'appellent Monsieur a celui ou ils s'appellent Citoyen; les seize autres sont departementales et fort utiles encore, quoique d'une moindre importance. Une autre route qui n'est pas pavee et n'exige aucune reparation, une route qui n'est ni royale ni departementale, une route qui marche toute seule, c'est l'Ain qui traverse le departement auquel il donne son nom du nord au sud depuis le Jura jusqu'au Rhone, prenant en chemin tout ce qu'il y a de bon et de vendable: et les belles pierres de Villebois, et les grands chenes et les grands sapins pour les remettre au Rhone qui les prend a son tour et les porte a Lyon la belle ville, et de la dans tout le midi de la France. Ces routes sont d'un interet plus haut encore qu'on ne le pense; elles unissent le nord et le midi, Strasbourg l'Allemande, et Marseille la Grecque; l'est a l'ouest, Bordeaux la ville aux bons vins et Geneve l'horlogere; Lyon est la, a vingt enjambees de poste, prete a mettre en uvre tout ce qu'on lui enverra; Geneve a trente pas. This is the first study of Balzac's work to examine theatre in La Comédie humaine both as a theme in itself and for its influence on Balzac's techniques and modes of presentation in his novels, and to demonstrate the symbiotic influence of novel and stage on Balzac's work as a playwright and novelist.
