Die vorliegende Arbeit entstand aus einem Unbehpgen an den kritischen Faschismusdiskussionen zur Zeit der Studentenbe wegung. Nachdem die "bUrgerliche" Faschismusforschung ihrer "ideologischen Komponenten" liberflihrt schien,2 vlUrden bis dahin nahezu verges sene marxistische Faschismusinterpreta tionen der Zwischenkriegszeit neu ediert und aufs Neue disku tiert. Die Texte aus den Zwanziger- und DreiBigerjahren boten nicht allein - damals attraktive - "marxistische Wissenschaft~ sondern auch Beispiele historisch gelebter Versohnung von marxistischer Theorie und Praxis, Faschismusanalyse und anti faschistischem Kampf, spiegelten Lernprozesse der Arbeiter bewegung, waren im Vergleich zur "blirgerlichen Wissenschaft" nach 1945, der W.F. Haug 1967 ideelle Beglinstigung des Natio nalsozialismus und "hilflosen AntifaschisI"us" vorwarf (Haug, 31970), als Gegenstand geistiger Aneignung und politischer Praxis unendlich attraktiver. In the opinion of some historians the era of fascism ended with the deaths of Mussolini and Hitler. Yet the debate about its nature as a historical phenomenon and its value as a term of historical analysis continues to rage with ever greater intensity, each major attempt to resolve it producing different patterns of support, dissent, and even hostility, from academic colleagues. Nevertheless, a number of developments since 1945 not only complicate the methodological and definitional issues even further, but make it ever more desirable that politicians, journalists, lawyers, and the general public can turn to "experts" for a heuristically useful and broadly consensual definition of the term. These developments include: the emergence of a highly prolific European New Right, the rise of radical right populist parties, the flourishing of ultra-nationalist movements in the former Soviet empire, the radicalization of some currents of Islam and Hinduism into potent political forces, and the upsurge of religious terrorism. Most monographs and articles attempting to establish what is meant by fascism are written from a unilateral authoritative perspective, and the intense academic controversy the term provokes has to be gleaned from reviews and conference discussions. ’Long live liberty, equality, fraternity and dynamite’ So went the traditional slogan of the radical liberals in Greater Swabia, the south-western part of modern Germany. This book investigates the development of what the author terms ’popular liberalism’ in this region, in order to present a more nuanced understanding of political and cultural patterns in Germany up to the early 1930s. In particular, the author offers an explanation for the success of National Socialism before 1933 in certain regions of South Germany, arguing that the radical liberal sub-culture was not subsumed by the Nazi Party, but instead changed its form of representation. Together with the famous völkish fraction and the leftist fraction within the chapters of the Nazi Party, there were radical-liberal associations, ex-members of radical-liberal parties, sympathizers with these parties, and notables with a radical orientation derived from family and regional traditions. These people and associations believed that the Nazi Party could fulfil their radical - liberal vision, rooted in the local democratic and liberal traditions which stretched from 1848 to the early 20th century. By looking afresh at the relationship between local-regional identities and national politics, this book makes a major contribution to the study of the roots of Nazism.
