Die kritische Auseinandersetzung mit unterschiedlichen theoretischen Perspektiven, Konzepten, Instrumenten und Verfahren bereichern die praktische Soziale Arbeit, sodass die Auseinandersetzung mit der Theorie die Grundlage für eine erfolgreiche Interventionspraxis darstellt. Dabei muss die soziale Diagnostik als ein Prozess bestimmt werden, bei dem das professionelle Verstehen von bio-psycho-soziokultureller Problemstellungen mit unterschiedlichen Methoden angestrebt wird. Die Konzepte des Verstehens betreffen jedoch nicht wie in der klassischen Hermeneutik das Verstehen von Texten, sondern Interpretation und Verstehen betreffen den Lebenstext und Kontext der Klienten/-innen. Zielgruppen der sozialen Diagnostik können Individuen, Gruppen, Organisationen und das Gemeinwesen sein, aber auch der Sozialraum an sich, sodass unterschiedliche Einzelaspekte in dem existierenden System in ihrem Zusammenspiel evaluiert werden müssen. Für die vorgelegte Analyse ist der Gegenstandsbereich auf die Kinder- und Jugendhilfe eingegrenzt. Die soziale Diagnostik betrifft die verschiedenen Bereiche der Kinder- und Jugendhilfe - die Hilfe zur Erziehung, den Kinderschutz oder die offene Jugendarbeit. Es ergeben sich gravierende Unterschiede, ob die Arbeitsweise fallspezifisch vom einzelnen Individuum ausgeht, oder fallunspezifisch den Sozialraum betreffen. Dies ist jedoch kein Indiz für die Nutzlosigkeit der sozialen Diagnostik für die fallübergreifende Arbeit.

Um herauszufiltern, inwiefern Soziale Diagnostik im Bereich der ambulanten Kinder- und Jugendhilfe in Kärnten eine Bedeutung hat und welche Anwendung Soziale Diagnostik findet, gibt es im zweiten Teil der Masterthesis eine zirkuläre Forschung, welche sich sowohl auf eine quantitative Erhebung als auch auf Expert:inneninterviews stützt. Der Terminus Soziale Diagnostik wird seit 1917 ambivalent diskutiert. Assoziiert wird damit Segregation, Klassifikation und Exklusion. Darüber hinaus beanspruchen andere Disziplinen den Terminus der Diagnose für sich. Die sogenannte Hilfeplanung ist ein Prozess, der es ermöglichen sollte, die Interventionen so zu planen, dass die Unterstützungsleistungen an die Klient:innen und deren Umwelt angepasst werden.
