Aktuelle Siedlungsstrukturen führen zu neuen, vielfältigen Formen von Sozialen Nachbarschaften. Diese entsprechen immer weniger dem Image des anonymen Nebeneinanders, noch dem Bild der engen zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen auf dem Land. Veränderte Mobilitäts- und Vernetzungsmöglichkeiten tragen außerdem dazu bei, dass bedeutsame persönliche Beziehungen immer weniger ausschließlich in der unmittelbaren (räumlichen) Nachbarschaft verortet sind und das Netz persönlicher (Nachbarschafts-) Beziehungen räumlich weit aufgespannt ist. Gleichzeitig wird dem lokalen Nahraum - im Sinne der baulichen Nachbarschaft - nach wie vor eine hohe Bedeutung zugeschrieben. Das Buch macht sich auf die Spurensuche nach Nachbarschaftskonzepten und -geschichte, ordnet diese in aktuelle theoretische Vergemeinschaftungsdiskurse ein und eröffnet mit dem Konzept der Sozialen Nachbarschaften Perspektiven für Nachbarschaftspolitiken und die professionelle Arbeit mit bzw. in Nachbarschaften.

Der sogenannte Wrangelkiez in Kreuzberg ist eines der am stärksten von Gentrifizierung bedrohten Stadtviertel Berlins, verfügt aber zugleich über eine der widerstandsfähigsten Bewohnerschaften der Stadt. Die urbane Nachbarschaft wird in der vorliegenden Publikation unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Commons und des (Dis-)Commonings betrachtet. Dies geschieht aus dreierlei Perspektiven: Planung, Gemeinwesenarbeit und Bildungsarbeit. In der vorliegenden als Bildungsmaterial und Forschungsdokumentation zugleich konzipierten Publikation wird die Nachbarschaft auf ihre Potentiale ihrer Re-/Produktion von sozial-räumlichen Beziehungsgeflechten, Zugangssystemen aber auch in Bezug auf die Risiken der Abschöpfung nachbarschaftlich hergestellter "Güter" untersucht: In welchem Zusammenhang stehen der Raum der Nachbarschaft, das Beziehungsgefüge der Nachbar_ innen und die täglichen Handlungen, die beides verbinden? Mit welchen Mitteln wird der urbane Raum als Ort der Interaktion und Teilhabe gemeinschaftlich erzeugt und erhalten? Welche geplanten oder ungeplanten Prozesse haben Einfluss auf die räumliche Struktur sowie auf den Alltag der Bewohner_innen und Nutzer_innen? Wer bedient sich der kollektiv erzeugten Werte im Raum bzw. wem werden sie zur Verfügung gestellt? Die Publikation wurde durch Weiterbearbeitung der Ergebnisse des im Sommersemester 2017 durchgeführten Recherche- und Kartierungsseminars „Spatial Commons. Hin und weg vom Kiez“ erstellt sowie auf Grundlage der Ergebnisse eines "Fachtags zur Bedeutung von Gewerberäumen als Orte des Gemeinschaffens für die Nachbarschaft" im November 2018. The so-called Wrangelkiez in Kreuzberg is one of Berlin's districts most threatened by gentrification, but at the same time it is one of the most resistant neighbourhoods in the city. In this publication, this urban neighbourhood is considered from the perspective of the commons and the processes of (dis-)commoning. This is done from three perspectives: planning, community work and education. In this publication, conceived as educational material and research documentation at the same time, the neighbourhood is examined for its potential for the re/production of social-spatial relationships, but also in relation to the risks of the siphoning off of "goods" produced by and in the neighbourhood: What is the relationship between the spaces of the neighbourhood, its social structure, and the daily actions that connect both? By what means is urban space as a place of interaction and participation jointly created and maintained? Which planned or unplanned processes have an influence on the spatial structure as well as on the everyday life of the residents and users? Who makes use of the collectively generated values in the space or to whom are they made available? The publication was developed through further processing of the results of the research and mapping seminar "Spatial Commons. Hin und weg vom Kiez" conducted in the summer semester 2017 and on the basis and of the results of a "symposium on the importance of commercial spaces as places of community life for the neighbourhood" in November 2018.

Urban Change and Citizenship in Times of Crisis addresses the fact that in the beginning of the twenty-first century the majority of the world’s population is urbanised, a social fact that has turned cities more than ever into focal sites of social change. Multiple economic and political strategies, employed by a variety of individual and collective actors, on a number of scales, constitute cities as contested spaces that hold opportunities as well as restrictions for their inhabitants. While cities and urban spaces have long been of central concern for the social sciences, today, classical sociological questions about the city acquire new meaning: Can cities be spaces of emancipation, or does life in the modern city entail a corrosion of citizenship rights? Is the city the focus of societal transformation processes, or do urban environments lose importance in shaping social reality and economic relationships? Furthermore, new questions urgently need to be asked: What is the impact of different historical phenomena such as neo-liberal restructuring, financial and economic crises, or migration flows, as well as their respective counter-movements, on the structure of contemporary cities and on the citizenship rights of city inhabitants? The three volumes address such crucial questions thereby opening up new spaces of debate on both the city and new developments of urbanism. The contributions to Theories and Concepts offer new theoretical reflections on the city in a philosophical and historical perspective as well as fresh empirical analyses of social life in urban contexts. Chapters not only critically revisit classical and modern philosophical considerations about the nature of cities but no less discuss normative philosophical reflections of urban life and the role of religion in historical processes of the emergence of cities. Composed around the question whether there can be such a thing as a ‘successful city’, this volume addresses issues of urban political subjectivities by considering the city’s role in historical processes of emancipation, the fight for citizenship rights, and today’s challenges and opportunities with regard to promoting social justice, integration, and diversity. Consequentially, theory-driven empirical analyses offer new insight into ways of solving problems in urban contexts and a genuine approach to analyse the Social Quality in cities.

This first volume of a two-volume collection of essays provides a comprehensive examination of the idea of social control in the history of Europe. The uniqueness of these volumes lies in two main areas. First, the contributors compare methods of social control on many levels, from police to shaming, church to guilds. Second, they look at these formal and informal institutions as two-way processes. Unlike many studies of social control in the past, the scholars here examine how individuals and groups that are being controlled necessarily participate in and shape the manner in which they are regulated. Hardly passive victims of discipline and control, these folks instead claimed agency in that process, accepting and resisting -- and thus molding -- the controls under which they functioned. Seit Menschengedenken spielt die Existenz von Gut und Böse im Menschen eine herausragende Rolle. Auch im religiösen Kontext des Abendlandes ist mit dem theologischen Sachverhalt der Erbsünde und der Zäsur, die diese hervorgebracht hat, das Bewusstsein für die Unterscheidung zwischen diesen beiden Grundelementen entstanden. Ebenso basiert die Dramaturgie eines jeden Märchen auf dieser grundlegenden Unterscheidung und der Erkenntnis, dass mit der Existenz menschlicher Sozialnormen in jedem Bezugssystem die Existenz einer Abweichung dieser Normen einhergeht. Die Ursache des Bösen oder – weniger spirituell – devianter, bisweilen krimineller Verhaltensweisen ist in der Kriminologie, die sich nicht auf die Theorie von der Erbsünde als Urzelle der Delinquenz kapriziert, Grundlagenforschung allererster Güte. Deshalb begnügen sich Kriminologen und Soziologen auch nicht damit solche menschlichen Wesensmerkmale als Determinante qua Geburt hinzunehmen, sondern sind vielmehr seit Jahrhunderten auf der Suche nach den Bedingungsfaktoren für Kriminalität im Lebenslauf. Gleichzeitig steckt in der Bemühung zur Identifizierung kriminogener Umstände in der Biografie auch die Bemühung solche Risiken frühzeitig zu erkennen und dem scheinbaren Determinismus menschlicher Lebenswege entgegenzuwirken.

Jan Starcke geht unter Rückgriff auf die Theorie der kollektiven Wirksamkeit (Collective Efficacy) den Fragen nach, welche Rolle die informelle soziale Kontrolle innerhalb von Nachbarschaften für das persönliche Sicherheitsgefühl spielt und wie Vertrauen zwischen Bewohnern einer Nachbarschaft entsteht. Erstmals werden dabei Datensätze für zwei deutsche Großstädte mit unterschiedlichen sozialstrukturellen Voraussetzungen in vergleichender Perspektive analysiert: Wuppertal und Stuttgart. Im Rahmen von Mehrebenenanalysen (Multilevel Analysis) wird festgestellt, dass der kollektiven Wirksamkeit in den Untersuchungsstädten ein unterschiedlicher Stellenwert für die subjektive Wahrnehmung von Sicherheit zukommt, womit die Generalisierbarkeit des Ansatzes in Frage gestellt wird.
