Impact Investment and Social Finance gain more and more international attention. Local ecosystems are forming share, national legislation and other factors highly influencing this development. Comparing those ecosystems can give valuable insights, what countries could learn from each other and to what extend national solutions are needed. This study is a first comparison between the UK and German impact investing markets. It is based on a qualitative research method, namely explorative and semi-structured interviews as well as two focus groups. The status quo of both countries as well as the challenges found in the German market are then used to draw conclusions on how the German market could benefit from the UK's development. Results are clustered around demand, intermediaries and supply as well as national context, regulatory framework, impact and leadership. This study concludes to what extent the UK market can act as a role model and which challenges require a 'German solution' or can be met by adapting actions taken in the UK.

Sein neues Modell beschäftigt sich mit der Möglichkeit Armut durch ein "Business" zu bekämpfen, statt wie traditionell durch Spenden und andere Zuwendungen. Dies hat, laut Yunus, viele Vorteile, welche in dieser Arbeit, neben einer generellen Vorstellung des Modells, zur Sprache kommen. Die Struktur des Tourismus unterscheidet sich grundlegend von anderen, z.B. herstellenden, Industrien. Nicht zuletzt existiert er auch dort wo Armut herrscht. Beide Konzepte weisen also Berührungspunkte auf, welche in dieser Arbeit zum ersten Mal untersucht und vorgestellt werden. Des weiteren werden Ansätze aufgezeigt, wie das Modell des Social Business in der Tourismuswirtschaft funktionieren kann. Es wird eine umfassende Analyse vorgestellt, in der gezeigt wird ob Merkmale eines Social Business bereits in der deutschen Tourismusindustrie auffindbar sind. Diese theoretische Analyse wird durch zwei Expertengespräche zum Thema ergänzt und abgerundet. Die Arbeit beantwortet dementsprechend die Frage inwiefern das Modell des Social Business im Tourismus angewendet werden kann, ob dies nachhaltig zur Armutsbekämpfung führt bzw. beiträgt und welche Akteure bereits Ansätze im Bereich Social Business zeigen.

Slum tourism is a globalizing trend and a controversial form of tourism. Impoverished urban areas have always enticed the popular imagination, considered to be places of ‘otherness’, ‘moral decay’, ‘deviant liberty’ or ‘authenticity’. ‘Slumming’ has a long tradition in the Global North, for example in Victorian London when the upper classes toured the East End. What is new, however, is its development dynamics and its rapidly spreading popularity across the globe. Township tourism and favela tourism have currently reached mass tourism characteristics in South Africa and in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In other countries of the Global South, slum tourism now also occurs and providers see huge growth potential. While the morally controversial practice of slum tourism has raised much attention and opinionated debates in the media for several years, academic research has only recently started addressing it as a global phenomenon. This edition provides the first systematic overview of the field and the diverse issues connected to slum tourism. This multidisciplinary collection is unique both in its conceptual and empirical breadth. Its chapters indicate that ‘global slumming’ is not merely a controversial and challenging topic in itself, but also offers an apt lens through which to discuss core concepts in critical tourism studies in a global perspective, in particular: ‘poverty’, ‘power’ and ‘ethics’. HOW SUSTAINABLE IS INNOVATION? Problematically, most contemporary patterns of innovation in human social systems and organisations are not sustainable. This prevents people from learning effectively, from recognising and solving their problems, and from operating in sustainable ways. It is arguably why societies, businesses and industries around the world are so unsustainable. Sustainable innovation is a pattern of social learning and problem-solving that is, itself, sustainable. The sustainability of innovation, moreover, is linked to the sustainability of its outcomes, which manifest themselves in what people produce and do in the world. Sustainable innovation, then, is a necessary precondition for sustainability in how societies and organisations function – the ways they organise, the products and services they make, the energy and resources they use, and the wastes they produce. As challenges such as demographic pressures, ethnic tensions, terrorism, global poverty, pandemics and abrupt climate change force their way into mainstream politics and business, so we see growing interest in innovation, entrepreneurial solutions and, critically, issues such as how to ensure successful solutions replicate and scale. Sustainable Innovation aims to illustrate that shift. Instead of simply focusing on environmental and technological matters, it views and evaluates innovation-for-sustainability in terms of the human, social and management challenges and responses. It argues that a just, efficient and sustainable balancing of these elements is best achieved by the development of new knowledge, and by the evolution of better means both of embedding that emerging knowledge in organisations and institutions, and of managing the relevant flows of information, knowledge and wisdom. The book stresses that claims that a particular product, production process or service are sustainable usually assume that an appropriate balance has been achieved between people, planet and profit. However, calculating the sustainability of such things, let alone of complex systems such as enterprises or economies, can be impossible. Instead of "sustainability", the book favours the use of terms such as "making sustainable", emphasising that in dynamic operating environments organisational processes are changing constantly, whether or not they are under effective strategic control by management. Innovation, too, is dynamic by definition. Sustainable Innovation argues that there must be a constant focus on the triple bottom line of economic, social and environmental value creation during the innovation process. Sustainable innovation is a new challenge for organisations. It is a process that should permeate the whole organisation, in terms of its members, its tasks, its coordination mechanisms and its procedures. Waste or pollution should not be seen as the reason for further intervention downstream, but as an end-of-the-pipe effect, which could be organisationally cured upstream. Developed from the Dutch research programme "Knowledge Creation for Sustainable Innovation", this book presents empirical research and cases to develop a theory of sustainable innovation that is based on management of knowledge, knowledge and cognition and innovation approaches.
