Unbeirrt hält auch diese Sammlung soziologischer Studien an dem Titel "Aufklä rung" fest. Wer die soziologische Literatur des letzten Jahrzehnts soziologisch, das heißt mit Sinn für Realität betrachtet, wird wenig finden, was diesen Anspruch rechtfertigen könnte. Er ist stärker umstritten als je zuvor. Die Dreieinigkeit von Aufklärung, Vernunft und Politik hat keinen Ankerpunkt in der Realität gefunden. Sie hatte ganz und gar auf Zukunft gesetzt und kontrafaktisch auf ihre eigene Normativität. So groß bemessene Gesten vermögen jedoch kaum noch zu überzeugen. Wie sollte man heute angesichts bedrängender Zukunftssorgen sich auf das verlassen können, was als Zukunft impliziert war? Lieber flüchtet man unter die Fittiche der Klassi ker, die prinzipiell endlose Möglichkeiten der Interpretation und damit einen Schutz gegen Gedanken- und Arbeitslosigkeit zu bieten scheinen. Neben der Exe gese der Klassiker bietet auch die Exegese selbstproduzierter Daten Möglichkeiten zur Variation soziologischer Aussagen. All das sind berechtigte Wege der Forschung und des Erkenntnisgewinns, aber Exegese ist keine Aufklärung.

Many Westerners view Islam as a religion that restricts and subordinates women in both private and public life. Yet a surprising number of women in Western Europe and America are converting to Islam. What attracts these women to a belief system that is markedly different from both Western Christianity and Western secularism? What benefits do they gain by converting, and what are the costs? How do Western women converts live their new Islamic faith, and how does their conversion affect their families and communities? How do women converts transmit Islamic values to their children? These are some of the questions that Women Embracing Islam seeks to answer. In this vanguard study of gender and conversion to Islam, leading historians, sociologists, anthropologists, and theologians investigate why non-Muslim women in the United States, several European countries, and South Africa are converting to Islam. Drawing on extensive interviews with female converts, the authors explore the life experiences that lead Western women to adopt Islam, as well as the appeal that various forms of Islam, as well as the Nation of Islam, have for women. The authors find that while no single set of factors can explain why Western women are embracing Islamic faith traditions, some common motivations emerge. These include an attraction to Islam's high regard for family and community, its strict moral and ethical standards, and the rationality and spirituality of its theology, as well as a disillusionment with Christianity and with the unrestrained sexuality of so much of Western culture.

Dass Edmund Husserl am Problem der Intersubjektivität gescheitert ist, gilt als ausgemacht - und ebenso, welche Konsequenzen daraus zu ziehen sind. Entgegen dem allenthalben pauschal erklärten `Abschied vom Subjekt' spricht aber vieles dafür, dass es in der gegenwärtigen Sozialtheorie eher um eine Reformulierung transzendentaler Subjektivität geht. Diese Interpretationsthese wirft ein neues Licht auf den sozialtheoretischen Diskurs, der im deutschen Sprachraum in den vergangenen dreissig Jahren vom Gegensatz von Jürgen Habermas' und Niklas Luhmanns Theorien bestimmt war: `Diskurs' und `System' erscheinen als gegensätzliche Versuche, `Subjektivität' und `Interität' in ein theoretisch befriedigendes Verhältnis zu setzen. Wenn aber - so die kritische These dieses Buches - weder die Reformulierung von Subjektivität als `Interität' noch die Reformulierung von Subjektivität ohne `Interität' das Problem der Intersubjektivität überzeugend löst, ist dies ein Grund, neuerlich in eine direkte Auseinandersetzung mit Husserls Theorie transzendentaler Subjektivität einzutreten. Dabei stellt sich heraus, dass Husserls vielkritisierter und -skandalisierter Versuch, den Sinn `Anderer' im `Eigenen' zu fundieren, in der transzendentalphänomenologischen Subjekttheorie durch ein umgekehrtes Begründungsverhältnis konterkariert wird. Bei aller Problematik dieser Theorieanlage - welche nur in Gegenwendung zu den Gewohnheiten der Husserl-Interpretation, vor allem aber auch zu Husserls Selbstinterpretation in den Blick kommt - zeigt sich, dass der phänomenologische Begriff des transzendentalen Subjekts seinen Reformulierungen als Diskurs und als System in mancher Hinsicht überlegen ist.

Nowadays, politics is only one voice among many in the concert of social self-organization. Its function is to articulate the differentiated systems of our societies: it encourages their self-restraint, while at the same time restraining itself. Such a conception obviously threatens the primacy of the nation-state. While it is not necessarily disappearing, it must nevertheless cease to be thought of as a dominant principle of organization, and must assume its place in a system of regulation that proceeds on several levels. Distant from the anarchist or Marxist theories that herald the end of the state as it is from libertarian theories of the minimal state, the book illustrates that it is possible in the contemporary period to go beyond the alternatives of dirigisme and neoliberal spontaneity. However, such a transformation can only prove effective through two conditions: we must first reject the enduring opposition between Right and Left, and second, we must invent an anti-state social democracy that is able in its own right to glean the most it can out of the liberal legacy. This book combines philosophical technicality, clarity and elegance of writing in an attempt to provide politics with meaning again, particularly in an era where discourse about its powerlessness abounds.

Die Soziologie blickt, was praktische Verwendung und theoretische Konsolidierung anlangt, in eine offene, höchst ungewisse Zukunft. All ihren Beständen und jedem ihrer Einsätze fehlt die Gewißheit, dauerhafte Erkenntnis zu sein. Das gilt selbst für empirische Forschung, besonders aber für rein theoretische Überlegungen. In dieser Lage wäre ein Verzicht auf zusammenfassende Theorie verhängnisvoll, aber es emp fiehlt sich, solche Theorie zunächst einmal ins Unreine zu schreiben. Dafür schien mir, über eine Reihe von Jahren hinweg, der Zeitschriftenaufsatz die geeignete Form der Mitteilung zu sein. Die Zahl und die Zerstreuung solcher Aufsätze erschweren jedoch den Zugang, den Überblick, die Kontrolle und die Kritik. Diesen Mangel soll die hiermit vorgelegte Sammlung beheben. Im Sinne dieser Zweckbestimmung lag es, von einer Überarbeitung der bereits gedruckten Aufsätze abzusehen. So blieben Überschneidungen stehen und auch Un ebenheiten in der Formulierung, die bei einem Neuentwurf vermeidbar wären. Es war jedoch notwendig und sinnvoll, eine Auswahl zu treffen, und daraus ergab sich die Anregung, zur Abrundung zwei neue Aufsätze zu schreiben. Ausgewählt habe ich Beiträge zur allgemeinen theoretischen Soziologie und zur Theorie der Gesellschaft und ihrer primären Teilsysteme. Unter diesem Gesichtspunkt war es erforderlich, einen Beitrag zur Theorie der Gesellschaft neu zu verfassen, da die bereits veröffentlichten Gedanken zu diesem Thema zu sehr vom jeweiligen Anlaß der Publikation geprägt waren. Und ferner schien es mir sich zu lohnen, die in Ansätzen skizzierte theoretische Konzeption auch für den Fall des Sozialsystems der Wirtschaft durchzuspielen.
