Space Taste And Affect written by Emily Falconer and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-08-31 with Business & Economics categories.

This book is an exploration of how time, space and social atmospheres contribute to the experience of taste. It demonstrates complex combinations of material, sensual and symbolic atmospheres and social encounters that shape this experience. Space, Taste and Affect brings together case studies from the fields of sociology, geography, history, psycho-social studies and anthropology to examine debates around how urban designers, architects and market producers manipulate the experience of taste through creating certain atmospheres. The book also explores how the experience of taste varies throughout life, or even during fleeting social encounters, challenging the sense of taste as static. This book moves beyond common narratives that taste is ‘acquired’ or developed, to emphasize the role of psycho-social histories of nostalgia, memories of childhood, migration, trauma and displacement in the experience of we eat and drink. It focuses on entrenched social dimensions of class, value and distinction instead of psychological and neuroscientific conceptualizations of taste and sensuous practices of consumption to be intrinsically linked to the experience of taste in complex ways. This book will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students of sociology, human geography, tourism and leisure studies, anthropology, psychology, arts and literature, architecture and urban design.

Flavor Perception written by Andrew J. Taylor and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-04-15 with Technology & Engineering categories.

Unlike other human senses, the exact mechanisms that lead to our perception of flavor have not yet been elucidated. It is recognised that the process involves a wide range of stimuli, which are thought likely to interact in a complex way, but, since the chemical compounds and physical structures that activate the flavor sensors change as the food is eaten, measurements of the changes in stimuli with time are essential to an understanding of the relationship between stimuli and perception. It is clear that we need to consider the whole process - the release of flavor chemicals in the mouth, the transport processes to the receptors, the specificity and characteristics of the receptors, the transduction mechanisms and the subsequent processing of signals locally and at higher centres in the brain. This book provides a state-of-the-art review of our current understanding of the key stages of flavor perception for those working in the flavor field, whether in the academic or industrial sector. In particular, it is directed at food scientists and technologists, ingredients suppliers and sensory scientists.

Skype Bodies Screens Space written by Robyn Longhurst and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-13 with Science categories.

Despite the popularity of Skype with video many of us are still figuring out how to ‘do’ it. Interviews reveal that we can now run the programme but we are less certain about how to ‘perform’ in front of the webcam. Seeing ourselves in the box on the side can feel strange. We are not quite sure which bits of our bodies to display on the screen, how much to move around the room, or move the device around the room. Is it acceptable to use Skype with video at a funeral, in crowded spaces or while in bed? This book addresses how people are emotionally and affectually connecting with others audio-synchronously on the screen in a variety of different spatial contexts. Topics include Skype with video being used by grandparents to connect with grandchildren, friends and family using it for special occasions, and partners using it for romance and sex. Theories addressing bodies, gender, queerness, phenomenology and orientation inform the research. It concludes that while Skype does not offer some kind of utopian future, it does open up possibilities for existing power relations to be filtered through new lines of sight/site which are shaping what bodies can do and where.

Consuming Atmospheres written by Chloe Steadman and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-09 with Business & Economics categories.

Atmosphere is a term often used in everyday life to describe how a consumption space feels and has long been an important theme within marketing. There has been renewed interest in atmosphere over recent years in marketing and beyond, with the concept at a crucial point in its development. However, research about atmosphere is often confined into disciplinary silos. Consuming Atmospheres unsettles such disciplinary boundaries by delivering an interdisciplinary collection of cutting-edge work on atmosphere and consumption. Specifically, the book brings together experts from various disciplinary backgrounds to explore how atmospheres are designed, experienced, and researched. Within these three thematic parts organising the collection, atmosphere is explored across a range of consumption and geographic contexts, including pop-up stores, music festivals, tourist spaces, town centres, sports stadia, amusement arcades, food and drink, urban squats, and seaside piers across England, Scotland, Denmark, and Slovenia. The book will appeal to academics and postgraduate students within marketing and beyond, given the chapter authors have backgrounds in marketing, consumer research, geography, sociology, youth studies, art and design, place management, and law. It may also be of interest to practitioners endeavouring to co-create more effective consumption atmospheres, such as marketers, retailers, and place managers.
