The leitmotif, but not exclusive theme, of the present volume is Ronald Langacker’s (1987) thesis that “lexicon, morphology, and syntax form a continuum of symbolic units serving to structure conceptual content for expressive purposes”. The concept of the lexicogrammar continuum contrasts especially with mainstream generative grammar, but also, although less radically, with other cognitive linguistic paradigms, such as Construction Grammar. The contributors to this volume explore the lexicogrammar continuum and other issues of the architecture of language mostly from a cognitive linguistic perspective. A wide range of theoretical and methodological themes is covered such as the integration of discourse and interactional phenomena into Cognitive Grammar, the status of introspective data, figurative language and thought (i.e. metaphor and metonymy), morphosyntactic constructions, and phonological structure. Besides English (including Old English), languages analyzed in some detail include Polish, Czech, Dutch, Estonian, Georgian, German, Danish, and Portuguese. Living at the beginning of the 21st century requires being numerate, because numerical abilities are not only essential for life prospects of individuals but also for economic interests of post-industrial knowledge societies. Thus, numerical development is at the core of both individual as well as societal interests. There is the notion that we are already born with a very basic ability to deal with small numerosities. Yet, this often called “number sense” seems to be very restricted, approximate, and driven by perceptual constraints. During our numerical development in formal (e.g., school) but also informal contexts (e.g., family, street) we acquire culturally developed abstract symbol systems to represent exact numerosities – in particular number words and Arabic digits – refining our numerical capabilities. In recent years, numerical development has gained increasing research interest documented in a growing number of behavioural, neuro-scientific, educational, cross-cultural, and neuropsychological studies addressing this issue. Additionally, our understanding of how numerical competencies develop has also benefitted considerably from the advent of different neuro-imaging techniques allowing for an evaluation of developmental changes in the human brain. In sum, we are now starting to put together a more and more coherent picture of how numerical competencies develop and how this development is associated with neural changes as well. In the end, this knowledge might also lead to a better understanding of the reasons for atypical numerical development which often has grieve consequences for those who suffer from developmental dyscalculia or mathematics learning disabilities. Therefore, this Research Topic deals with all aspects of numerical development: findings from behavioural performance to underlying neural substrates, from cross-sectional to longitudinal evaluations, from healthy to clinical populations. To this end, we included empirical contributions using different experimental methodologies, but also theoretical contributions, review articles, or opinion papers.

From the moment of birth, humans and animals are immersed in time: all experiences and actions evolve in time and are dynamically structured. The perception of time is thus a capacity indispensable for the control of perception, cognition and action. The last 10 years have witnessed a remarkable resurgence of interest in timing and time perception, with a continuously increasing number of researchers exploring these innate abilities. However, existing robotic systems largely neglect the key role of time in cognition and action. This is a major barrier for accomplishing the long-term goal of symbiotic human-robot interaction. The critical question is: how is time instantiated in a biological system and how can it be implemented in an artificial system? Recent years have for example seen an increasing focus on the relationship between affective states and the experience of time. The influence of affective states on subjective time seems to depend on the embodiment of emotions: intertwined affective and interoceptive states may create our subjective experience of time. Since robotic systems are in essence embodied information-processing systems that interact with the real world, we hope to inspire a reciprocal exchange of ideas between the field of Robotics and the Cognitive Neurosciences. In this research topic, we call researchers from different disciplines (Robotics, Neurosciences, and Psychology) to present their empirical work, their models or reviews on the question of how time judgments are instantiated in biological and artificial systems. Of particular interest are papers on time perception in humans and animals, with a focused interest on embodied time perception, i.e. the influence of affective and body states on time judgments. Moreover, the present Research Topic seeks to gather papers discussing the key role of time on different aspects of robotic cognition as well as modeling approaches. We are interested in paving the way for a new generation of intelligent computational systems that incorporate the sense of time in their processing loop and thus accomplish more efficient and more advanced cognitive capacities.

Instead, many dimensions have been taken to be part of the structure of memory. Of these, space and time stand out: all personal experience can in principle be indexed by where and when specific events occurred, and both scientific evidence and common sense suggest that the way we relate different events together in memory draws on these dimensions. For instance, to remember what one ate for lunch last Thursday, one might call up a memory of where one was, or retrace the events of the day leading up to lunch. Some nuts-and-bolts questions arise immediately, starting with whether the spatial or the temporal dimension is primary. Or rather, do we rely on both equally? Do we represent them separately or jointly? But there are bigger questions with broad implications: What makes space and time such central structures in our cognitive world, and what is the conceptual nature of these structures? These questions are deeply related to one another, though they span multiple fields and methodologies, touching on philosophy, psychology and neuroscience. Space, Time, and Memory explores three key questions: first, the role of space and time as structures that organize memory, second, theories of the nature of memory itself that draw on space and time, and finally applications of questions about the structure of memory to debates about perception, decision-making, and artifical intelligence.
