Spain, 1000–1200: Art at the Frontiers of Faith tells a nuanced story of the dynamic and interconnected medieval Iberian Peninsula while celebrating the artistic exchange among Christians, Muslims, and Jews in the region during the Middle Ages. This Bulletin emphasizes the variety and richness of the Museum’s holdings of medieval Iberian artworks which include mosaics, frescos, architectural decorations, manuscripts, textiles, ivories, and metalwork. Exploring how artists in medieval Spain drew from many sources of inspiration and navigated religious differences in their art, this text underscores the complexity of interfaith interaction during a pivotal era in Spanish history.

"In this way the culture of medieval Spain is relevant to our own world both enriched and anguished by its diversity. The Arts of Intimacy is a vital book, dedicated to telling the story of the complexity of interactions between the three monotheistic religions in medieval Spain - yielding lessons that can be drawn through to our experience today. The volume serves as a souvenir of Spanish history and culture, and an invitation to examine how a complex culture is deeply shaped by both receptivity and conflict."--BOOK JACKET.

In 1609, the entire Muslim population of Spain was given three days to leave Spanish territory or else be killed. In a brutal and traumatic exodus, entire families were forced to abandon the homes and villages where they had lived for generations. In just five years, Muslim Spain had effectively ceased to exist: an estimated 300,000 Muslims had been removed from Spanish territory making it what was then the largest act of ethnic cleansing in European history. Blood and Faith is a riveting chronicle of this virtually unknown episode, set against the vivid historical backdrop of Muslim Spain. It offers a remarkable window onto a little-known period in modern Europe - a rich and complex tale of competing faiths and beliefs, of cultural oppression and resistance against overwhelming odds.

The Aron Collection of Islamic Metalwork has been built over many years of research. The present catalogue, which follows the first one curated by James W. Allan in 1986, illustrates a selection of objects from the collection. It studies the main regional schools that flourished in this expression of Islamic art, in particular in the areas of Iran and Central Asia, through specimens representing the breadth of their production. The items date mainly to the Medieval era, between the 9th and the 14th centuries, but include later works too. A journey to discover an extremely technical and complex art, sometimes a real exercise in virtuosity, and one that is ultimately fascinating and sophisticated. Islamic metalwork has been deeply admired for centuries also in the Western world, providing a source of inspiration. The different shapes, uses and manufactures of the pieces in the collection offer a good overview of the main artistic streams in the metalworking art and open a window on the luxuries of the princely courts as well as on the everyday life of parts of Muslim society. They offer up a largely unknown vision of Islam.

Every two years the fall issue of the Met's quarterly Bulletin celebrates notable recent acquisitions and gifts to the collection. Highlights of Recent Acquisitions 2016–2018 includes Battle of the Little Bighorn by a Lakota artist who fought in that famous conflict as a young man, an exceedingly rare Chinese landscape from the tenth century that is the capstone of a gift of twelve important works from the Oscar L. Tang family, Francesco Salviati’s recently rediscovered portrait of the Florentine doctor Carlo Rimbotti, and examples of a Qur’an and a Hebrew Bible from medieval Spain. This publication also honors the many generous contributions from donors that make possible the continued growth of the Met's collection. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 14.0px Verdana}
