The myths of settlement of the Great Plains usually conjure up images of Anglo-American pioneers moving into a sea of grass, opposed by Native peoples. Such myths leave out the considerable influence of Spain. Spain and the Plains corrects this error, revealing the Plains as a northern frontier of New Spain, a frontier antedating the northern European presence in North America, and a frontier where Spanish and Native peoples met, clashed, and blended. Spain and the Plains introduces and documents Spanish exploration of and migration to the Plains, examines the myths that shaped Spanish exploration and the pragmatic realities of exploration and settlement, and documents racism and misrepresentation that Hispanic groups encountered in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Contributors show how early explorers, shaped by the intellectual context of the Renaissance, sought mythical locales: the fountain of youth, the straits of Anian, and the city of Quivira. They describe how exploration shifted to emphasize military and economic gains in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Essays portray the diaspora of Spanish settlers and reconstruct daily life in their settlements on the Plains. This unique collection paints a clear picture of a crucial but often misrepresented and neglected era in American and Spanish history. The editors, all authors of previous books, are affiliated with the Center for Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where Frances W. Kaye is a professor of English, John R. Wunder is a professor of history and journalism, and Ralph H. Vigil is a professor emeritus of history and ethnic studies. Contributors include Félix D. Almaráz Jr., Thomas E. Chávez, Frances W. Spain In The Southwest written by John L. Kessell and has been published by University of Oklahoma Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-27 with History categories.

John L. Kessell’s Spain in the Southwest presents a fast-paced, abundantly illustrated history of the Spanish colonies that became the states of New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and California. With an eye for human interest, Kessell tells the story of New Spain’s vast frontier--today’s American Southwest and Mexican North--which for two centuries served as a dynamic yet disjoined periphery of the Spanish empire. Chronicling the period of Hispanic activity from the time of Columbus to Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1821, Kessell traces the three great swells of Hispanic exploration, encounter, and influence that rolled north from Mexico across the coasts and high deserts of the western borderlands. Throughout this sprawling historical landscape, Kessell treats grand themes through the lives of individuals. He explains the frequent cultural clashes and accommodations in remarkably balanced terms. Stereotypes, the author writes, are of no help. Indians could be arrogant and brutal, Spaniards caring, and vice versa. If we select the facts to fit preconceived notions, we can make the story come out the way we want, but if the peoples of the colonial Southwest are seen as they really were--more alike than diverse, sharing similar inconstant natures--then we need have no favorites.

Shortly after the sacking of Mexico by the Spaniards, the leaders of New Spain heard many rumors of the riches existing in the vast area north of Mexico. In both 1540 and 1599, the viceroy of Mexico formed very large armies to march to the north and find and loot the wealth from areas reputed to being very rich. Francisco Coronado headed the first expedition, but in Cibola and Quivira found the Indians to be very poor and living in skin lodges. Coronado returned to Mexico in great disgrace. Despite the Coronado failures, the Spanish leaders still believed that Quivira possessed rich gold mines. They commissioned Juan de Onaté to lead another expensive expedition to investigate the area. Upon reaching Quivira, Onaté met the same fate as Coronado. He found no gold and had to retreat in ignominious defeat. In spite of the failings of Onaté, the men of his expedition had a great interplay with the Indians of Quivira. On one occasion, they helped defend the Pawnee Indians from the Comanche tribe. So great was the Spaniard quest for gold, that 180 years after Coronado, the Spaniards under Don Pedro de Villasur again invaded Quivira. At this late date under the influence of the French, the Oto and Pawnee attacked the Spaniards along the Platte River and decimated their army. This defeat then spelled the end of the Spanish power on the Great Plains.

"AWAY down in the south-western corner of Europe, cut off from the rest of the continent by a range of mountains six to twelve thousand feet high, is the beautiful country of Spain. It is a country of lofty and rugged mountain chains and long level plains. Some of the latter lie low, and are watered by flowing rivers; here the climate is genial and the rainfall copious, so that the fields are fat and rich; others, in the centre of the country, stand higher above the level of the sea; these have a scanty rainfall, excessive beat in summer, and extreme cold in winter, and are sometimes baked and sometimes frozen, but always dry and poor."

Wirtten many years ago by Mary Parmele, she begins this book with the following passage:No name is more fraught with picturesque and romantic interest than that of the "Spanish Peninsula."After finishing this rare bit of handiwork nature seems to have thrown up a great ragged wall, stretching from sea to sea, to protect it; and the Pyrenees have stood for ages a frowning barrier, descending toward France on the northern side from gradually decreasing heights but on the Spanish side in wild disorder, plunging down through steep chasms, ravines, and precipices with sharp cliffs towering thousands of feet skyward, which better than standing armies protect the sunny plains below. But the "Spanish Peninsula," at the time we are about to consider, was neither "Spanish" nor was it a "peninsula." At the dawn of history this sunny corner of Europe was known as Iberia, and its people as Iberians.
