Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs lebten etwa 4.500 Juden spanischer Staatsangehörigkeit im deutschen Machtbereich. Bis 1942 waren sie wie andere ausländische Juden von den Deportationen in die Todeslager ausgenommen. Himmler und Eichmann drängten aber darauf, auch Ausländer zu deportieren. Aus außenpolitischen Rücksichtnahmen setzte das Auswärtige Amt in Berlin durch, daß zehn neutralen und verbündeten Staaten 1942/43 die Möglichkeit zur Repatriierung ihrer Juden gegeben wurde. Die Arbeit, für die erstmals alle relevanten spanischen und deutschen Quellen sowie Archive in Israel, Frankreich, den Niederlanden und den USA ausgewertet wurden, schildert detailliert die zögerliche spanische Reaktion und vergleicht sie mit der anderer neutraler Regierungen. Auf deutscher Seite steht im Mittelpunkt das Auswärtige Amt, das in dieser Frage nicht dem Reichssicherheitshauptamt untergeordnet war. Die Gewährung von Schutzpässen für Juden in Budapest Ende 1944 ist ein weiteres Thema. Schließlich setzt sich das Buch auch mit Madrids Nachkriegspropaganda, das Land habe nicht nur Juden mit spanischen Pässen, sondern allen sephardischen Juden Hilfe gewährt, kritisch auseinander. Die Arbeit zeigt, daß es auch in der Hochphase des Holocaust 1943/44 für die Entscheidungsträger auf beiden Seiten noch Spielräume gab, die zur Rettung von Juden hätten genutzt werden können. Warum dies auch von spanischer Seite nur teilweise geschah, wird kritisch hinterfragt. Damit ist das Buch auch ein Beitrag zur allgemeinen Geschichte des Holocaust.

Eine wesentliche Frage ist derzeit, wie und warum dies geschah, wenn man bedenkt, dass Spanien von einem Nazi-Deutschland-nahen Regime unter der Führung von General Franco regiert wurde. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wird das Verhältnis zwischen Spanien und Deutschland in der Zeit der Judenverfolgung betrachtet. Sie setzt sich aus vier Kapiteln zusammen. Zunächst wird ein historischer Überblick über den deutschen Einfluss auf Spanien gegeben. Im zweiten Kapitel wird auf die Judenpolitik Bezug genommen, woraufhin das dritte Kapitel die Rolle Spaniens als Transitland untersucht. Abschließend wird im vierten Kapitel auf die Flucht des Juden Walter Benjamin eingegangen. Der Aufsatz schließt mit einer Zusammenfassung der gewonnenen Erkenntnisse über den Holocaust in Spanien. Die Bedeutung Spaniens für jüdische Flüchtlinge sollte nicht unterschätzt werden, da es aufgrund seiner geografischen Lage, die es Juden ermöglichte, Spanien auf ihrer Flucht als Transitland zu nutzen, eine wichtige Rolle spielte. Die Zugänge zum Atlantik und zum Mittelmeer ermöglichten es den Juden, das Land durchqueren und Europa von dort aus auf dem Seeweg zu verlassen. In den Jahren des Zweiten Weltkriegs hatten neutrale Länder die besten Voraussetzungen und Möglichkeiten, Juden, die vor dem Genozid der Nazis flohen, Asyl zu gewähren. Die Aufnahmebereitschaft vieler neutraler Staaten war jedoch gering.

Personal Names, Hitler, and the Holocaust: A Socio-Onomastic Study of Genocide and Nazi Germany provides readers with an increased understanding of and sensitivity to the many powerful ways in which personal names are used by both perpetrators and victims during wartime. This book concentrates on one of the most terrifying and yet fascinating periods of modern history: the Holocaust. In particular, it examines the different ways in which personal names were used by Nationalist Socialists to hunt and destroy the victims of their genocidal ideology. Even before requiring Jewish residents to wear a yellow Star of David and have the letter “J” stamped on their passports, Nazi leaders had decreed that all Jewish women and men must add the names “Sara(h)” and “Israel” to their documentation. It did not take long for the perfidious logic behind this naming (onomastic) legislation to become frighteningly clear: it made it that much easier to pinpoint Jewish residents for discrimination, marginalization, relocation, deportation, and ultimately extermination. Through compelling first-hand accounts from Holocaust survivors, in-depth interviews with descendants of Nazi war criminals, and a plethora of chilling cases extracted directly from the meticulous records kept by the National Socialists, this work presents a harrowing historical account of the way personal names were used during the Third Reich to achieve Hitler’s homicidal vision. Importantly, the use of personal names and naming to target and annihilate victims is not a historical anomaly of World War II but a widespread sociolinguistic practice that has been demonstrated in many modern-day acts of genocide.
