To live in Spanish Harlem, New York's oldest barrio, is to confront some of the city's most endemic problems: crime, drugs, AIDS, and chronic unemployment. Yet the mecca where Puerto Ricans first established themselves in the 1940s is now the "capital of Hispanic America"--home to 120,000 people, half of whom are Latino. Shot in the mid-to-late '80s, Joseph Rodriguez's superb photographs bring us into the heart of Spanish Harlem, capturing a spirit and a time that survives despite the ravages of poverty. In a now-distant landscape littered with abandoned buildings, ominous alleyways, and plagues of addiction, the residents of Spanish Harlem persevered with flamboyant style and gritty self-reliance. From idyllic scenes of children playing under the sprinklers on the playground, or performing the Bomba Plena on "Old Timer's Day, " to shocking images of men shooting up speedballs and children dying of AIDS, Rodriguez showcases a day in the life of the barrio.

A death bed request, hauntings and murder lead Maria into a journey of self discovery. To please Adrianna, her dying mother, Maria promises to seek her father, whom she believes long dead. But she never intends to keep this promise. Until her mother starts haunting her dreams. Dreams, memories and visions entice her. Night after night, Adrianna visits Maria's dreams and nags her into fulfilling the deathbed request. Nightmares and visions force her on a quest to Spanish Harlem. Among the prostitutes and the crooked police, her family and the street people, she discovers her father was a terrible man: a pimp, thief and drug dealer. Until he is murdered. And more, there is some dark family secret no one discusses. Memories mingle with dreams and visions as she discovers her own past. Failure after failure meets each attempt she makes at solving the mysterious death of her father, who died when she was only nine. With each new discovery, things look worse. She discovers he was murdered by an unknown assailant, his throat cut from ear to ear. The family's dark secret: he was a an incestuous child molester. She learns her father was murdered by a sexual abuse victim. When things become as bad as they can be, Mare discovers that she herself was molested and may even be her father's killer. Dreams tell her she killed him because he was raping her at the age of nine. For comfort, Maria falls back on her childhood religion, Catholicism. At the Feast of Saint Anthony, she goes to Saint Anthony's, the local church, and confesses to the murder. But to her amazement, an old priest tells her that she did not commit the murder. She learns her father is not her father, but a stepfather, who married her mother in a business deal. Adrianna was an unwed girl, pregnant by a handsome young priest. She needed a "father" for the unborn Maria; he needed to marry a US citizen to remain in America. So he married his brother's pregnant girlfriend. He was killed by her biological father, the priest, who caught his brother sexually abusing her. Maria unable to believe this story, wonders who is her real father, and demands to know why she should believe him. The old priest confesses that he is her biological father and cut his own brother's throat in a fit of rage.

Spanish Harlem’s musical development thrived between the 1930s and 1980s in New York City. This area was called El Barrio by its inhabitants and Spanish Harlem by all others. It was a neighborhood where musicians from the Caribbean or their descendants organized musical groups, thereby adding to the diaspora that began in Africa and Spain. The music now called salsa had its roots in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Santo Domingo, and it continued developing on another island: Manhattan.

"Dávila's keen insights into the politics of marketing ethnicity, community marginalization and class divisions cuts through neo-liberal postures to glaringly reveal the real issue - who will construct (and control) East Harlem's future? Well versed in the scholarship, Dávila has produced a book that is essential for understanding the increasingly important role and aspirations of Puerto Rican and Latino communities in New York's history."—Virginia Sánchez Korrol, author of From Colonia to Community: The History of Puerto Ricans in New York City "Providing an expansive ethnographic portal into New York's famous 'El Barrio,' Davila documents the ways in which the neighborhood's Latino cultures can be commodified as a magnet for gentrification as well as providing an obstacle to it. An absorbing read providing a unique contemporary perspective on East Harlem."—Neil Smith, author of American Empire: Roosevelt's Geographer and the Prelude to Globalization "Unlike most ethnographers of the urban poor in search of authentic street experience, Dávila gives us an ethnography of power. With rich insights and sensitivity, she documents the pitched battles between developers, politicians, long-time residents, newcomers, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, and African Americans over space, gentrification and cultural representation in East Harlem. Dávila peels back the many layers of local stories in order to reveal a complex, national story of resistance against urban neoliberalism."—Robin D. G. Kelley, author of Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination

Overshadowed by the fame of Harlem and the wealth of the Upper East Side, East Harlem is rarely noted as a historical enclave. However, from the early 1800s through today, East Harlem has welcomed wave after wave of immigrants struggling for a place in the nation's most famous city. African Americans, Irish, Germans, European Jews, Italians, Scandinavians, Puerto Ricans, and Latinos are among the ethnic groups who have shaped this neighborhood, bringing with them their religious, social, and culinary traditions. East Harlem is the first volume to tell this neighborhood's history through images. Photographs of the iron, stone, and rubber factories, the tenements, the 100th Street community, famous politicians such as Fiorella LaGuardia, the Second and Third Avenue elevated subways, St. Cecilia's, and many other subjects capture East Harlem's past in one memorable collection.

Harlem meets Puerto Rico in this spicy novel that explores true love and the truth about love... EXCERPT: Andre and I shared a boat ride under a starlit sky in Venice. Our gondolier paddled up the river singing an Italian love song. The streets were lined with gothic buildings that looked older than time itself. The charm of that ancient city partially submerged underwater took my breath away. I sipped from my glass of Cabernet Amadio and gazed into Andre's cocoa-colored eyes as they sparkled in the moonlight. His butterscotch complexion was sun kissed from our afternoon together at Lido di Venezia beach. I gazed at his succulent lips and the muscular body that made my body sing from every position. Andre was a living work of art, but our connection went deeper than physical attraction. Like me, he was also biracial. The son of a Haitian mother and French Canadian father, he had lived through the wonderful and painful aspects of existing between two worlds. Despite his 7 figure income as an international commodity broker, he was a humble and caring man whose generous heart reminded me of my father. Andre was definitely my soul mate. He took my hand and said, "Faith, I have something to tell you. I know it this may shock you, because I've been keeping this inside for a long time..." DESCRIPTION: Faith Thomas-Moreno is a proud daughter of Spanish Harlem. The product of an African-American father and Puerto Rican mother, her childhood was filled with love, perfectly seasoned recipes and the rhythms of salsa and jazz. As a teenager, her world is upended by chaos and tragedy. Faith finds solace in the performing arts. When she transforms into a fictitious character onstage, it gives Faith reprieve from the pain in her own life. As Faith strives to make it as an actress, she takes every part that she's offered... from video girl to extra. Finally, she gets her big break when she lands a recurring role on television's highest-rated soap opera. But the real life drama begins when she loses her job because of a jealous co-star. She finds comfort in the arms of her boyfriend, Andre, a handsome millionaire who lavishes her with exotic gifts and international vacations. But he has an explosive secret that threatens to spoil everything. Old wounds resurface when Faith's twin sister, Felicia, decides to reunite with her abusive ex-boyfriend. When Faith tries to save Felicia, both women end up in a dangerous situation. Together, they confront the devastating childhood memories that Faith spent a lifetime trying to forget. For the first time in two decades, Faith can no longer pretend. Their colorful and wise grandmother, Abuelita, helps brings both sisters closer to truth and love. When the unspeakable happens to Felicia, Faith is forced to step into the role of a lifetime. Sade's novel blends salsa and soul with the vibe of New York City. "A Rose In Spanish Harlem" rewards readers with humor, drama, sizzling sex and characters that speak from the heart. This book is "muy caliente!"
