Portraits have a long history in royal courts as a way of communicating the monarch's status, rulership, and even piety. This anthology places such art works studied in the context of their commission, production, and display. Artists use different representational strategies to convey important information about the sitter. These aspects combined with patronage, location and use of the work form a departure point from which to address portraits comprehensively. The intersection between artist, the portrayed and audience with the additional layer of formed identity allows the portrait to hold a special place as popular genre of Spanish art. The relationship between the use of the work and its context is key to understanding better the cultural and social norms of Spanish aristocracy and what they reveal about Spanish identity in general. Used to solidify governance, lineage, and marriage, portraits legitimized the negotiation of status, power, and social mobility.

"Paul Stewart's translation of Portrait of an Unknown Man, Cipriano de Rivas Cherif's biography of his brother-in-law and friend, introduces to English-speaking readers Manuel Azana, Spain's wartime president whom the Franco regime had treated as a nonperson." "Considered the symbol of the Second Republic in Spain, Azana was the subject of a flood of books and articles in 1990, the fiftieth anniversary of his death. The Spanish Ministry of Culture sponsored a major exhibition honoring Azana as author and statesman, while symposia dedicated to him were held in Barcelona and Montauban, France, where he died after finding uneasy refuge from Franco's armies and Hitler's Gestapo." "The biography also clarifies the complex politics of Spain in the twenties and thirties by focusing on this preeminent politician of that era, and it achieves depth in its portrait by painting the background of three generations of a bourgeois family caught up in dramatically changing times."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. In conjunction with an exhibition at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, 'Salazar: portraits of Influence in Spanish New Orleans, 1785-1802' tells the story of Yucatan-born Josef Xavier Francisco de Salazar y Mendoza (c. 1750-1802), whose career spanned most of the Spanish administration of New Orleans. This catalogue includes a comprehensive collection of Salazar's portrait paintings and examines his work with essays that explore the historical and artistic implications of the era. Additionally, his oeuvre will be further contextualized in relation to works by other early New Orleans portraitists such as Antonio Meucci, Franois M. Guyol de Guiran (1775-1849) and Louis Collas (1775-1856), whose careers and works are reactive to the city as a site of mobility and transatlantic artistic exchange. Exhibition: Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans, USA (08.03- 02.09.2018).
