Is there a good reason to study the doctrine of God? Knowing God, or not knowing God, has eternal consequences to it. The Savior came to explain the Father (John 1:18) and he said that eternal life is knowing God and knowing Jesus Christ whom God sent (John 17:3). Such a knowledge must include something more than a mere knowledge of facts. It must show a relationship of those facts, one to another, and how they relate as a whole to the life of the believer. Such a study must show what the spiritual benefits are to the redeemed, which then turns to the spiritual experience they have as they grow in Christ. Set in the reality that God is eternal, Doolittle’s work will press this biblical truth into a practical mold considering how eternal realities apply to men in all their stations of life. He first considers the idea of eternity in general, then considers how we should be influenced by eternity and its prospect. He considers the soul, how God made it eternal, and what that means, as well as considering, then, both the happiness of the soul in heaven, and the misery of the soul in hell, and how those function in light of the eternal realities of both. Then he looks to convince the reader to look at all they do in light of eternity, and how all things that they do in their life, whether they are thoughts, words, or deeds, have an impact on our eternity. He also takes time to encourage ministers in light of eternity to “be about their business” and not to waste a moment. Finally, he applies the entire work in a conclusion and final application. Doolittle’s work is best summed up in his own words, asking, “Is there an eternal state, one of unseen eternal joys and the other of eternal torments? If so, who can sufficiently mourn the blindness, madness, and folly of this distracted world and the unreasonableness of those with rational and eternal souls, to see them busily employed in the matters of time while neglecting everlasting things?” He is practically taken up with the question and application of neglecting the things which God finds important, such as life in light of eternity. He says that men, “neglect … God and of Christ,” and they do this by, “his frequent and even constant refusals of remedying grace, his seldom thoughts of death and judgment, and his neglect to make preparation for another world while considering only things temporal.” His emphasis is to awaken men by the word, particularly pressing his main text of 2 Cor. 4:18, “While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.”

Self-deception is inherent in everyone, even born-again Christians, those who have much biblical light and knowledge. And whatever degree of holiness they are currently at, they are satisfied with where they are. In this satisfaction, they often flatter themselves, believing that God is as pleased with them as they are of themselves. Many people in the church flatter themselves, believing they have discovered an easier path in the Christian walk, and in the eternal salvation which brings them to heaven, than Paul was aware of. They assume they will achieve victory and receive the crown not by battling and mortifying their own sins, but by deluding themselves into thinking they are something rather than nothing and engaging in cleverly crafted self-talk full of gracious words and empty persuasiveness. This only serves to disguise their own hypocrisy and unfaithfulness to Christ’s covenant, leading to the deception and ruin of themselves, and even other people they infect. The Christian church is filled with people like this. Are you one of them? Self-flattery is a sin against the ninth commandment which must be unmasked. In this work, McMahon seeks to uncover this very pervasive sin, showing what self-flattery is, how one comes to flatter themselves in their daily walk, and the motives to shun self-flattery in order to mortify it by the power of the Spirit. This work by Whiddon is his only known work. It was primarily prepared for his flock to teach them and remind them about living well before God with a conscience that is purified (regenerated) and pacified (put at peace) by the blood of Jesus Christ and the power of the Spirit of Christ. His principle text is Hebrews 13:18, “For we trust we have a good conscience, willing in all things to live honestly.” Whiddon called this work “his tract” to his flock that they might read over and study the contents so as not to forget how to live their life before Christ and men with a “good conscience.” He covers the definition and meaning of a good conscience; the opposed nature of a natural conscience; the means to purify and pacify a fallen sinner’s conscience; how to hold onto a good conscience and how to exercise it.
