Studies in landscape ecology focus on the effect of heterogeneity on ecosystem structure and function. Vigorous growth in the field has included the development of methods and results that can be applied to an impressive range of environmental issues. The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a current perspective on this rapidly developing science. This book features contributions by internationally renowned experts in the field that address a broad spectrum of political, theoretical and applied aspects of the subject. Chapters describe a number of methods and models that are used at landscape and regional scales within the context of ecosystem management, to assess changes in biodiversity, and to evaluate sustainable landscape planning for cultural as well as natural settings. Also included are instructional models to assist in teaching.

The spatial structure of a forest stand is an important signature of forest dynamics. The local environment determines competition among the trees, growth, death and regeneration. Therefore, the spatial configuration of the individual trees in a forest stand can provide information about the underlying ecological processes at the site. This thesis focuses on the determination and analysis of the local constellation of individual trees (characterized by species, age, size etc.) in a forest stand. A large number of spatial statistical methods can be applied to this spatial pattern analysis. Besides using some classical statistical methods, I propose two new methods for spatial analysis. First, I develop a new method for the spatial analysis of objects. That approximates each individual tree as a circle, instead of a point, thus minimizing the bias of the classical methods. Finally, I proposed a new method, based on Wavelet Transform, to obtain spatial scale information about the point processes occurring within a study site. By this, this approach goes beyond classical point pattern methods and is innovative.

Handbook Of Spatial Point Pattern Analysis In Ecology written by Thorsten Wiegand and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-20 with Mathematics categories.

This handbook shows how the techniques of point-pattern analysis are useful for tackling ecological problems. Within an ecological framework, it guides readers through a variety of methods for different data types and aids in the interpretation of the results obtained by point-pattern analysis. Along with the techniques, the book provides a comprehensive selection of real-world examples. Most of the examples are analyzed using the authors' software package Programita. The software and a manual are available online.

Statistical Analysis And Modelling Of Spatial Point Patterns written by Dr. Janine Illian and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-04-15 with Mathematics categories.

Spatial point processes are mathematical models used to describe and analyse the geometrical structure of patterns formed by objects that are irregularly or randomly distributed in one-, two- or three-dimensional space. Examples include locations of trees in a forest, blood particles on a glass plate, galaxies in the universe, and particle centres in samples of material. Numerous aspects of the nature of a specific spatial point pattern may be described using the appropriate statistical methods. Statistical Analysis and Modelling of Spatial Point Patterns provides a practical guide to the use of these specialised methods. The application-oriented approach helps demonstrate the benefits of this increasingly popular branch of statistics to a broad audience. The book: Provides an introduction to spatial point patterns for researchers across numerous areas of application Adopts an extremely accessible style, allowing the non-statistician complete understanding Describes the process of extracting knowledge from the data, emphasising the marked point process Demonstrates the analysis of complex datasets, using applied examples from areas including biology, forestry, and materials science Features a supplementary website containing example datasets. Statistical Analysis and Modelling of Spatial Point Patterns is ideally suited for researchers in the many areas of application, including environmental statistics, ecology, physics, materials science, geostatistics, and biology. It is also suitable for students of statistics, mathematics, computer science, biology and geoinformatics.
