At the fascinating frontiers of neurobiology, mathematics and psychophysics, this book addresses the problem of human and computer vision on the basis of cognitive modeling. After recalling the physics of light and its transformation through media and optics, Hérault presents the principles of the primate's visual system in terms of anatomy and functionality. Then, the neuronal circuitry of the retina is analyzed in terms of spatio-temporal filtering. This basic model is extended to the concept of neuromorphic circuits for motion processing and to the processing of color in the retina. For more in-depth studies, the adaptive non-linear properties of the photoreceptors and of ganglion cells are addressed, exhibiting all the power of the retinal pre-processing of images as a system of information cleaning suitable for further cortical processing. As a target of retinal information, the primary visual area is presented as a bank of filters able to extract valuable descriptors of images, suitable for categorization and recognition and also for local information extraction such as saliency and perspective. All along the book, many comparisons between the models and human perception are discussed as well as detailed applications to computer vision.

Before an image is stored or transmitted, we have access to the original and the distorted versions. The enhanced codec is compared to the original block by block to determine which blocks have been improved by the enhancement These blocks are then flagged for post-processing in a way that is compliant with the JPEG standard and adds nothing to the compressed image's bandwidth. The end result is a compressed image that can be decompressed on any standard JPEG decompressor, but that can be enhanced by a sophisticated decompressor. For the comparison of the original and enhanced images, we have been developing a new vision model that is specifically tailored to the detection of errors that occur within or between two JPEG codec blocks. Previous filter models have been restricted from using a large number of filters due to computational constraints which we avoid by focusing the model on a tiny spatial area of 8x16 pixels. Further, features of human vision that have been included in previous models (color, temporal, stereo etc.) are not needed for this more focused problem. Issues that have not been completely addressed by previous models, such as masking effects, are tractable and the model is more applicable to WEG compression.

Image sequence processing is becoming a tremendous tool to analyze spatio-temporal data in all areas of natural science. It is the key to studythe dynamics of of complex scientific phenomena. Methods from computer science and the field of application are merged establishing new interdisciplinary research areas. This monograph emerged from scientific applications and thus is an example for such an interdisciplinaryapproach. It is addressed both to computer scientists and to researchers from other fields who are applying methods of computer vision. The results presented are mostly from environmental physics (oceanography) but they will be illuminating and helpful for researchers applying similar methods in other areas.

Psychophysical experiments were conducted to investigate how the human visual system determines the spatial structure of a visual scene. The theoretical basis of the research centers on three ideas: that local spatial filters constitute an initial stage of contrast-encoding; that the properties of these initial filters can affect accuracy of the judgements of the perceived separation; and that the actual encoding of interobject separation occurs at a higher level of processing with its own properties. the properties of the higher levels of processing can be determined by controlling the input from the local spatial filters. Unlike thresholds that are determined primarily at lower levels of processing, thresholds for spatial relationships were found to be highly sensitive to the context in which the stimuli are presented and highly insensitive to those spatial and temporal characteristics that are known to play major roles in the determination of contrast detection thresholds. Context was found to affect both the threshold and the perceived value of interobject separations. Furthermore, the effects of context vary over time, being profound at short durations (100 ms) and small or negligible at long durations (500 ms). The effects of context on the accuracy of judgements of spatial relationships at brief durations were found to depend on the spatial proximity and spatial similarity of the targets and the background context.
