The perfect complement to all French programs, French Fun is a must for anyone wishing to have a more intimate acquaintance with the French language of Québec and the people who speak it. Ce livre constitue un recueil des mots et expressions les plus courants et colorés de la langue québécoise de tous les jours. Sorry I Don T Speak French written by Graham Fraser and has been published by Douglas Gibson Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-02-24 with History categories.

As the threat of another Quebec referendum on independence looms, this book becomes important for every Canadian — especially as language remains both a barrier and a bridge in our divided country Canada’s language policy is the only connection between two largely unilingual societies — English-speaking Canada and French-speaking Quebec. The country’s success in staying together depends on making it work. How well is it working? Graham Fraser, an English-speaking Canadian who became bilingual, decided to take a clear-eyed look at the situation. The results are startling — a blend of good news and bad. The Official Languages Act was passed with the support of every party in the House way back in 1969 — yet Canada’s language policy is still a controversial, red-hot topic; jobs, ideals, and ultimately the country are at stake. And the myth that the whole thing was always a plot to get francophones top jobs continues to live. Graham Fraser looks at the intentions, the hopes, the fears, the record, the myths, and the unexpected reality of a country that is still grappling with the language challenge that has shaped its history. He finds a paradox: after letting Quebec lawyers run the country for three decades, Canadians keep hoping the next generation will be bilingual — but forty years after learning that the country faced a language crisis, Canada’s universities still treat French as a foreign language. He describes the impact of language on politics and government (not to mention social life in Montreal and Ottawa) in a hard-hitting book that will be discussed everywhere, including the headlines in both languages.

Seminar paper from the year 2001 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2 (B), Dresden Technical University (Anglistics/ American Studies), course: Seminar: Varieties of Canadian English, language: English, abstract: Canada and Quebec With ten million square kilometers Canada is the world′s largest country. It consists of ten provinces and two territories, each having its own character due to the landscape and people who settled there. Just to name a few, there is the Prince Edward Island (P. E. I.), for instance, the smallest of all ten provinces. Farming is most important for the economy of the region, but fishing also helps. Attracted tourists can reach the sandy beaches by ferry to enjoy a quiet atmosphere. Or, there are three prairie provinces. At the end of the 19th century they were settled by immigrants of German, Scandinavian and Ukrainian origin. Saskatchewan is one of them. Lying in the center, it is home to the "Mounties," the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Canada is a country with two official languages, English and French. Every public service has to be offered in both languages, which is why sales people welcome their shoppers by saying "Hello / Bonjour," and which is why a third province needs mentioning here: Quebec, the largest of all Canadian provinces. It is very different from the rest because of a high French influence. Economically important for this region are hydroelectric power, logging, and manufacturing. Quebec′s commercial center is formed by Montreal. It is not only the second largest French-speaking city in the world, it also offers a wide range of cultural activities. However, there is more to Quebec than these rather late developments. Already 300 years ago the problem between the English and French originated. Reasons can be found in two facts. One, in 1608 the Frenchman Samuel de Champlain was the first to start a settlement in Quebec. Two, after the English and French colonies had grown and battles had begun, the Seven Years′ War was fought in 1763. The French lost and had to give nearly all their territory to the British. That was the so-called Treaty of Paris. Thus, French power actually ended then. People have their own way of life, though. They simply kept the French language, their Roman Catholic faith, and a civil code that had its origins in French laws. [...]

Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject American Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,0, LMU Munich (Amerikanistik Institut), course: Canada Today, language: English, abstract: This research paper wants to discuss the question, whether French is able to remain the predominant language in Canada ́s province Quebec, or if there is a shift towards replacement by the English language. Obviously, the number of the French speaking population in Quebec is a lot higher than the one that speaks English. Currently, about 9% of world ́s Francophones are Canadians and of those, around 30% are Quebecers. French is the mother tongue of over 80% of the Quebecois population, and of only 13%, it is English (Gentsch 142). It seems as if the roles in Quebec are assigned. But English is the world language and is spoken in the rest of Canada as well as by 280 million inhabitants of its huge southern neighbor, the United States of America. Quebec is surrounded by English speaking countries. Will a small province like Quebec be able to preserve its culture and its language or is it going to be overswept by the wave of "anglicization" after all? Canadians are very proud of their culture and language. It is very important for foreigners, who visit Quebec, to speak French. In an newspaper article about a winter festival in Quebec, a German boy said about himself and his friends: "Wir alle können kein Französisch" (Tourisme du Quebec) and therefore implicated that it is not possible to manage a visit in the Canadian province without knowing any French. But Quebec is not an only-French speaking province, is it? In almost all parts of the world, tourists, who visit other countries, are able to correspond in English there. In Quebec, although about 11% of all inhabitants are Anglophones, people prefer leading a conversation in French. They are proud of their culture and their language and therefore, they are looking down on everything that could endanger it. Quebecois are very much afraid of En
