“Special Envoy is an exceedingly French spy thriller.” —New York Times Book Review A dazzling satirical spy novel, part La Femme Nikita, part Pink Panther and part Le Carré—from one of the world’s preeminent authors Jean Echenoz’s sly and playful novels have won critical and popular acclaim in France, where he has won the Prix Goncourt, as well as in the United States, where he has been profiled by the New Yorker and called the“most distinctive voice of his generation” by the Washington Post. With his wonderfully droll and intriguing new work, Special Envoy, Echenoz turns his hand to the espionage novel. When published in France, it stormed the bestseller lists. Special Envoy begins with an old general in France’s intelligence agency asking his trusted lieutenant Paul Objat for ideas about a person he wants for a particular job: someone to aid the destabilization of Kim Jong-un’s regime in North Korea. Objat has someone in mind: Constance, an attractive, restless, bored woman in a failing marriage to a washed-up pop musician. Soon after, she is abducted by Objat’s cronies and spirited away into the lower depths of France’s intelligence bureaucracy where she is trained for her mission. What follows is a bizarre tale of kidnappings, murders and mutilations, bad pop songs and great sex, populated by a cast of oddballs and losers. Set in Paris, rural central France, and Pyongyang, Special Envoy is joyously strange and unpredictable, full of twists and ironic digressions—and, in the words of L’Express, “a pure gem, a delight.”

Lodi Gyaltsen Gyari spent decades drawing attention to the plight of the Tibetan people and striving for resolution of the Tibetan-Chinese conflict. He was the Dalai Lama’s Special Envoy and chief negotiator with the People’s Republic of China in the formal negotiations over the status of Tibet. In this revealing memoir, Gyari chronicles his lifetime of service to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan cause. Gyari recounts his work conducting formal dialogue with the Chinese leadership from 2002 to 2012, as well as his efforts during the many years of quiet diplomacy preceding these historic negotiations. He details the fits and starts of the parties’ relationship, addressing successes as well as failures and highlighting misperceptions, missteps, and missed opportunities by both sides. Gyari grounds his recollections of his time as Special Envoy in his life experience, providing a powerful account of the personal side of Tibet’s struggles. He describes the Tibetan resistance to the Chinese invasion and the tumultuous early years of the Tibetan community in exile as well as his family’s history and spiritual lineage. A reincarnated Tibetan Buddhist lama forced to flee Tibet during the Chinese invasion, Gyari illuminates how his political efforts fulfilled his spiritual calling. Informed by his unparalleled experiences, Gyari offers realizable—but provocative—recommendations for restarting the Tibetan-Chinese dialogue to achieve a mutually beneficial resolution of the issue. For all readers interested in Tibet’s complex modern history, this book offers an incomparable look inside the decades-long effort to achieve the Dalai Lama’s vision of a reunited Tibet.

Priscilla J. Austin has been in training as a CIA agent since returning from her first time in Africa in the summer of 1986. Apart from continuing her public relations consultancy, "an excellent cover," her supervisor notes, she still has no notion of what the agency wants her to do. Meanwhile, her public profile as "an ordinary woman makes good" has been enhanced by her work as spokesperson for the Bernhardts of Bow Lake and her work with the Hollingsworth Presidential Election Campaign. But Priscilla does have her foibles-her tendency to be unpredictable and her phobias-which could threaten the success of any mission. Regardless, agency officials know that only someone of Priscilla's particular personality and individual characteristics can complete the impending mission successfully. Even so, they give her a dry run. The opening scene is of Priscilla starting her regularly scheduled meeting with the Bernhardt Foundation for Boarding Schools for Zimbabwean and South African Girls. She is at a conference center in Harare, where, before long, the ceiling caves in, and some mysterious-looking men drop down into the room, clinging onto ropes. The men are not there to rescue her, either. While Priscilla takes cover under the conference table, she reminisces about how she got there in the first place. On the heels of her wedding, she'd been contacted for her first assignment "in service to her country." Her trial run was to deliver an official sealed envelope to the emirs in the United Arab Emirates. Apart from proving herself to the CIA, she'd also wanted to shake off pressure from her forthcoming wedding, which was less than a week away. Despite a bout with one of her phobia, her courier mission had been a success. She then led the top-of-the-line to be the special envoy. It was then that she'd headed off to Harare to conduct the board meeting, when onboard her flight she learned, for the first time, what the CIA had wanted of her as a special envoy. She hadn't even minded dumping her husband for the trip, which proved how hardcore she was. And although her first experience in the region had made her a heroine, she was wholly unaware that remnants of the South African Nationalists Movement's Patrol Guard-the enforcement arm of the gazillion-dollar diamond, gold, and platinum conglomerate-still existed. But, unexpectedly, her trip to Harare had been put off. It was time to initiate her special envoy mission, and it was clear that she had been surprised by it, too, and so soon. Nevertheless, as Priscilla prepared to meet with the first delegation, no one could have prepared her for what so easily could have aborted the mission. One can feel her disbelief when Abdul-Hakim approaches her in an "uncharacteristic manner." Yet, she pushes past her pain and moves forward with the meeting as if nothing had ever even happened. It was then that she'd resumed her trip to Harare. So it had been after starting her board meeting at the conference center in Harare that things had begun to fall apart, literally. When the ceiling in the conference room caved in, this time, unlike her experience with Abdul-Hakim, Priscilla declares, "I'll be damned if I'm the damsel in distress." Henceforth, there is no letting up; so, too, does Priscilla's ability to fend for herself. Along the way, from Harare to Amman-her final destination, Priscilla tackles gruesome circumstances. At the same time, a special ops' unit of the CIA engages the very terrorists that are trying to obstruct her mission. Although Special Envoy 1 can be read as a standalone, it might be useful first to read the trilogy that precedes it: Priscilla Engaging in the Game of Politics, Mystery in Harare, and Three Metal Pellets.

This book begins by discussing the problems of non-recognition and breaches in diplomatic relations, and then considers the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods which states, not in diplomatic relations, employ when they nevertheless need to communicate. These include intermediaries, disguised embassies, ceremonial occasions such as working funerals, the diplomatic corps in third states and at the seat of international organisations, special envoys, and joint commissions. In short, it is concerned with the kind of diplomacy which produced the rapprochement between Israel and the PLO in September 1993.

In this, the fourth installment in what has become "The Priscilla Series," political science professor-turned-fiction writer M.J. Simms-Maddox creates more adventure and intrigue for Priscilla. After her time in southern Africa in 1986, Priscilla--a bright, carefree, enterprising young woman closely bound to her minister-father who has raised her to think like a man--secretly signs on as a special agent with the American intelligence community. In so doing, she continues her public role as a successful public relations consultant and successfully spearheads the marketing campaign for the next president. But, at the start of 1990, the world as Priscilla once knew it has changed dramatically, and America still practices its foreign policies and intelligence-gathering based on the precepts of the Cold War. It is into such a world--on the heels of her wedding--that the outgoing president appoints Priscilla as a special courier for a secret mission. Then, with the success of her special courier-mission behind her--which Priscilla believes to have been a test--the newly-inaugurated president commissions her as a "special envoy" for a second secret mission, and, the newlywed--and still rather inexperienced intelligence agent--sets out on a perilous trek into Arab Islamic territory. The suspense-filled plot is entertaining and educational while shedding light on the behind-the-scenes makings of American foreign policy, as well as the goings-on in the intelligence community. And, if one yearns for an image of a contemporary charismatic young female character who happens to be African American, then Special Envoy will not disappoint. Essentially, the narrative contains something for everyone: action and adventure, politics, religion, a little romance, treachery, lots of terrorism, even interesting anecdotes for travel buffs. Along the way, Priscilla experiences many challenging predicaments, such as the seemingly relentless plots by the terrorists who failed to get her during her earlier time in southern Africa or the backlash for being a feminist in Arabic Islamic territory. Ultimately, however, she emerges as a heroine for all seasons, for she has yet to come upon a challenge that she could not overcome.
