Numerical Analysis is an interdisciplinary topic which develops its strength only when viewed in close connection with applications. Nowadays, mechanical engineers having computer simulation as a daily engineering tool have to learn more and more techniques from that field. Mathematicians, on the other hand, are increasingly confronted with the need for developing special purpose methods and codes. This requires a broad interdisciplinary understanding and a sense for model-method interactions. With this monograph we give an introduction to selected topics of Numerical Anal ysis based on these facts. We dedicate our presentations to an interesting discipline in computational engineering: multibody dynamics. Though the basic ideas and methods apply to other engineering fields too, we emphasize on having one homo geneous class of applications. Both authors worked through many years in teams developing multibody codes. Interdisciplinary work also includes transferring ideas from one field to the other and a big amount of teaching -and that was the idea of this book. This book is intended for students of mathematics, engineering and computer sci ence, as well as for people already concerned with the solution of related topics in university and industry. After a short introduction to multibody systems and the mathematical formulation of the equations of motion, different numerical methods used to solve simulation tasks are presented. The presentation is supported by a simple model of a truck. This truck model will follow the reader from the title page to the appendix in various versions, specially adapted to the topics.

This volume contains the edited version of selected papers presented at the Nato Advanced Study Institute on "Computer Aided Analysis of Rigid and Flexible Mechanical Systems", held in Portugal, from the 27 June to 9 July, 1994. The present volume can be viewed as a natural extension of the material addressed in the Institute which was published by KLUWER in the NATO ASI Series, Vol. 268, in 1994. The requirements for accurate and efficient analysis tools for design of large and lightweight mechanical systems has driven a strong interest in the challenging problem of multibody dynamics. The development of new analysis and design formulations for multi body systems has been more recently motivated with the need to include general features such as: real-time simulation capabilities, active control of machine flexibilities and advanced numerical methods related to time integration of the dynamic systems equations. In addition to the presentation of some basic formulations and methodologies in dynamics of multibody systems, including computational aspects, major applications of developments to date are presented herein. The scope of applications is extended to vehicle dynamics, aerospace technology, robotics, mechanisms design, intermittent motion and crashworthiness analysis. Several of these applications are explored by many contributors with a constant objective to pace development and improve the dynamic performance of mechanical systems avoiding different mechanical limitations and difficult functional requirements, such as, for example, accurate positioning of manipulators.

This proceedings volume contains 66 papers presented at the second "Contact Mechanics International Symposium" held in Carry-Le-Rouet. France. from September 19th to 23rd. 1994, attended by 110 participants from 17 countries. This symposium was the continuation of the first CMIS held in 1992 in Lausanne. of the Symposium Euromech 273 "Unilateral Contact and Dry Friction" held in 1990 in La Grande Motte. France. and of the series of "Meetings on Unilateral Problems in Structural Analysis" organized in Italy. every other year. during the eighties. The primary purpose of the symposium was to bring specialists of contact mechanics together in order to draw a representative picture of the state of the art and to identify new trends and new features in the field. In view of the contributions made. one may assert that the mechanics of contact and friction has now reached a stage where the foundations are clear both from the mathematical and from the computational standpoints. Some of the difficulties met may be identified by saying that frictional contact is governed by resistance laws that are non smooth and whose flow rule is not associated with the yield criterion through the traditional normality property.

Numerical Methods For Nonsmooth Dynamical Systems written by Vincent Acary and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-01-30 with Technology & Engineering categories.
This book concerns the numerical simulation of dynamical systems whose trajec- ries may not be differentiable everywhere. They are named nonsmooth dynamical systems. They make an important class of systems, rst because of the many app- cations in which nonsmooth models are useful, secondly because they give rise to new problems in various elds of science. Usually nonsmooth dynamical systems are represented as differential inclusions, complementarity systems, evolution va- ational inequalities, each of these classes itself being split into several subclasses. The book is divided into four parts, the rst three parts being sketched in Fig. 0. 1. The aim of the rst part is to present the main tools from mechanics and applied mathematics which are necessary to understand how nonsmooth dynamical systems may be numerically simulated in a reliable way. Many examples illustrate the th- retical results, and an emphasis is put on mechanical systems, as well as on electrical circuits (the so-called Filippov’s systems are also examined in some detail, due to their importance in control applications). The second and third parts are dedicated to a detailed presentation of the numerical schemes. A fourth part is devoted to the presentation of the software platform Siconos. This book is not a textbook on - merical analysis of nonsmooth systems, in the sense that despite the main results of numerical analysis (convergence, order of consistency, etc. ) being presented, their proofs are not provided.

Micromechanics Of Granular Materials written by Bernard Cambou and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-01 with Science categories.
Nearly all solids are compised of grains. However most studies treat materials as a continious solid. The book applies analysis used on loose granular materials to dense grainular materials. This title’s main focus is devoted to static or dynamic loadings applied to dense materials, although rapid flows and widely dispersed media are also mentioned briefly. Three essential areas are covered: Local variable analysis: Contact forces, displacements and rotations, orientation of contacting particles and fabric tensors are all examples of local variables. Their statistical distributions, such as spatial distribution and possible localization, are analyzed, taking into account experimental results or numerical simulations. Change of scales procedures: Also known as “homogenization techniques”, these procedures make it possible to construct continuum laws to be used in a continuum mechanics approach or performing smaller scale analyses. Numerical modeling: Several methods designed to calculate approximate solutions of dynamical equations together with unilateral contact and frictional laws are presented, including molecular dynamics, the distinct element method and non-smooth contact dynamics. Numerical examples are given and the quality of numerical approximations is discussed.

The coupling of models from different physical domains and the efficient and reliable simulation of multidisciplinary problems in engineering applications are important topics for various fields of engineering, in simulation technology and in the development and analysis of numerical solvers. The volume presents advanced modelling and simulation techniques for the dynamical analysis of coupled engineering systems consisting of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and biological components as well as control devices often based on computer hardware and software. The book starts with some basics in multibody dynamics and in port-based modelling and focuses on the modelling and simulation of heterogeneous systems with special emphasis on robust and efficient numerical solution techniques and on a variety of applied problems including case studies of co-simulation in industrial applications, methods and problems of model based controller design and real-time application.

Friction And Instabilities written by J.A.C. Martinis and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-04 with Science categories.
The book addresses instability and bifurcation phenomena in frictional contact problems. The treatment of this subject has its roots in previous studies of instability and bifurcation in elastic, thermoelastic or elastic-plastic bodies, and in previous mathematical, mechanical and computational studies of unilateral problems. The salient feature of this book is to put together and develop concepts and tools for stability and bifurcation studies in mechanics, taking into account the inherent non-smoothness and non-associativity (non-symmetry) of unilateral frictional contact laws. The mechanical foundations, the mathematical theory and the computational algorithms for such studies are developed along six chapters written by the lecturers of a CISM course. Those concepts and tools are illustrated not only with enlightening academic examples but also with some demanding industrial applications, related, namely, to the automotive industry.
