This book, first appearing in German in 2004 under the title Spezielle Relativit„tstheorie fr Studienanf„nger, offers access to the special theory of relativity for readers with a background in mathematics and physics comparable to a high school honors degree. All mathematical and physical competence required beyond that level is gradually developed through the book, as more advanced topics are introduced. The full tensor formalism, however, is dispensed with as it would only be a burden for the problems to be dealt with. Eventually, a substantial and comprehensive treatise on special relativity emerges which, with its gray-shaded formulary, is an invaluable reference manual for students and scientists alike. Some crucial results are derived more than once with different approaches: the Lorentz transformation in one spatial direction three times, the Doppler formula four times, the Lorentz transformation in two directions twice; also twice the unification of electric and magnetic forces, the velocity addition formula, as well as the aberration formula. Beginners will be grateful to find several routes to the goal; moreover, for a theory like relativity, it is of fundamental importance to demonstrate that it is self-contained and without contradictions.Author's website: www.relativity.ch.

Albert Einstein published two postulates in 1905 with the aim of resolving the issue of the propagation of electromagnetic radiation. A full-blown theory, known as the theory of special relativity today, based on the two postulates was then developed. The theory can be regarded as an extension of Newtonian physics (also known as Newtonian mechanics). Whereas Newtonian physics fails at speeds close to c, the speed of light, the theory of special relativity (the Relativity for short) covers speeds from zero to c. The Relativity is one of the greatest achievements of human intellect, and is often regarded as a subject difficult to comprehend. Since the Relativity is an extension of Newtonian physics, every aspects of the Relativity are in parallel to those of Newtonian physics. As Newtonian physics is comprehensible to most people, so should the Relativity be. The Relativity may be difficult to comprehend simply because it is not presented in an easy to understand format. This book is intended for easy to understand and for maintaining a balance between concept and mathematics. The mathematics involves only basic calculus. However, those who are not comfortable with it or are not interested in mathematical details can skip or glance through without missing the essential part of the theory. The book is divided into six chapters. The first chapter covers inertial reference frames (also called inertial systems), the principle of special relativity, the underlying concepts of Newtonian physics and the Relativity, and the Galilean transformations. The second chapter covers the ether hypothesis, the Michelson-Morley experiment, the efforts to save the ether hypothesis, and Einstein's two postulates of the Relativity. The third chapter covers the Lorentz transformations and the Relativistic kinematics. The fourth chapter covers a few applications and experimental verification of the Relativity. The fifth chapter covers the Relativistic dynamics. The sixth chapter covers the twin paradox and the essence of time dilation and space contraction resulted from the Lorentz transformations.

Relativity is a triumph of the power of human thought and Einstein's greatest gift to mankind. It is a fascinating but difficult theory to understand. Mathematics is intimidating for a beginner. The popular books do not go into details of the subject and textbooks are just too hard for self-study. This book aims to bridge the gap between the two. The emphasis of this book is to explain the meaning and intuition behind concepts and mathematics. There is extensive use of analogies from daily life to develop visualization and intuition. This book is well suited for a beginner who has limited physics and mathematics background. The biggest barrier in learning relativity is the notation, which is a language onto itself. If the meaning behind notation is not clear, it's easy to get lost in the maze of indices used in relativity. This book tries to address the reason and meaning behind relativistic notation.

This book is written for high school and college students learning about special relativity for the first time. It will appeal to the reader who has a healthy level of enthusiasm for understanding how and why the various results of special relativity come about. All of the standard introductory topics in special relativity are covered: historical motivation, loss of simultaneity, time dilation, length contraction, velocity addition, Lorentz transformations, Minkowski diagrams, causality, Doppler effect, energy/momentum, collisions/decays, force, and 4-vectors. Additionally, the last chapter provides a brief introduction to the basic ideas of general relativity, including the equivalence principle, gravitational time dilation, and accelerating reference frames. The book features more than 100 worked-out problems in the form of examples in the text and solved problems at the end of each chapter. These problems, along with the discussions in the text, will be a valuable resource in any course on special relativity. The numerous examples also make this book ideal for self-study. Very little physics background is assumed (essentially none in the first half of the book). An intriguing aspect of special relativity is that it is challenging due to its inherent strangeness, as opposed to a heavy set of physics prerequisites. Likewise for the math prerequisite: calculus is used on a few occasions, but it is not essential to the overall flow of the book.

In 1907, Albert Einstein started his ideas about the general theory of relativity. And it took eight more years after this to conceptualize, to mold, and to chisel (so to speak) so the theory could take proper form and come into being. The reason it took eight years to formulate and to produce his general theory of relativity was because the mathematics involved produced some difficulties to iron out. There are two different theories of relativity: general and special. For simplicity’s sake hereinafter in this book, we will call Einstein’s special theory of relativity: Theory S. And we will call Einstein’s general theory of relativity: Theory G. Thus, it took 8 years for Einstein to produce his Theory G. On the other hand, Einstein’s Theory S only required six or eight weeks to create. Einstein’s Theory S was a platform on to which to build higher and upward his Theory G, which is more expansive, and more all encompassing.

Writing a new book on the classic subject of Special Relativity, on which numerous important physicists have contributed and many books have already been written, can be like adding another epicycle to the Ptolemaic cosmology. Furthermore, it is our belief that if a book has no new elements, but simply repeats what is written in the existing literature, perhaps with a different style, then this is not enough to justify its publication. However, after having spent a number of years, both in class and research with relativity, I have come to the conclusion that there exists a place for a new book. Since it appears that somewhere along the way, mathem- ics may have obscured and prevailed to the degree that we tend to teach relativity (and I believe, theoretical physics) simply using “heavier” mathematics without the inspiration and the mastery of the classic physicists of the last century. Moreover current trends encourage the application of techniques in producing quick results and not tedious conceptual approaches resulting in long-lasting reasoning. On the other hand, physics cannot be done a ́ la carte stripped from philosophy, or, to put it in a simple but dramatic context A building is not an accumulation of stones! As a result of the above, a major aim in the writing of this book has been the distinction between the mathematics of Minkowski space and the physics of r- ativity.
