From the author of the New York Times bestseller Letters of Note comes a collection of 75 of history's most interesting, profound, and sometimes unknown speeches from a range of scintillating personalities such as Frederick Douglass, Justin Trudeau, Albert Einstein, Meghan Markle, Barbara Jordan, and Ursula K. Le Guin. This thoughtfully curated and richly illustrated collection celebrates oratory old and new, highlighting speeches we know and admire, while also shining a light on profound drafts that were never delivered or have until now been forgotten. From George Bernard Shaw's warm and rousing toast to Albert Einstein in 1930 and the commencement address affectionately given to graduates at Long Island University by Kermit the Frog, to the chilling public announcement (that was thankfully never made) by President Richard Nixon should Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become stranded on the moon, Speeches of Note honors the words and ideas of some of history’s most provocative and inspiring personages.

______________________ A richly illustrated and wonderfully eclectic collection of THE WORLD'S GREATEST SPEECHES - THE OLD, THE NEW AND THE UNSPOKEN - from the author of the international bestseller, Letters of Note. Discover speeches that altered the course of history, like NELSON MANDELA’s on the day he became South Africa’s first black President, and outpourings of much-needed change, such as the impassioned, impromptu appeal for women’s rights from SOJOURNER TRUTH, an African-American woman born into slavery. Expect the gloriously unexpected, as KERMIT THE FROG takes to the podium, and celebrate lives well-lived, including TILDA SWINTON’s tribute to ‘every alien’s favourite cousin’, DAVID BOWIE. While some speeches are heard by millions, some remain unspoken: the secret draft prepared for QUEEN ELIZABETH II during a military exercise for World War III, and PRESIDENT NIXON’s chilling public announcement should NEIL ARMSTRONG and BUZZ ALDRIN become stranded on the Moon. Excerpt from Famous Speeches: Selected and Edited With Introductory Notes A selection of speeches ought to include specimens of every class, so that no kind of oratory Should be altogether un represented. There have always been, perhaps in the nature of the case there must always be, at least two forms of rhetoric, often typified by the examples of Demosthenes and Cicero. There is the 'keen, terse, argumentative style, to be found in the great Athenian. There is the elaborate, or ornamental, decorative kind, of Which Cicero was the most consummate master, which aims less at the achievement of an immediate object than at the production of a general result. Neither kind can be excluded from any really representative series. Yet it must not be supposed that the two sorts of Speaking can always be separated, or that they are never found in the same speech. There must be some general proposition at the back of every practical scheme. There must be some particular inference to be drawn from every general rule. Much as the characters of speeches may vary, they have the common element of being all made for persuasion. A speech which does not persuade is useless. There are, how ever, examples of the eloquence which results from intense personal conviction, and has no ulterior motive, the eloquence of feeling. Excerpt from Selected Speeches: With Introductory Notes We all wish to leave behind us the memorial more lasting than brass of which the poet speaks, and I think we would all prefer to be remembered by a portrait rather than by an epitaph. This book is my portrait. I have put all of myself into these speeches. And I would like to think that when I am dead those who come after me and are for any reason interested in the story of my life will be able to form a judgment for themselves about me, and so far as possible judge me by my own words and actions. I must add a word as to the forensic speeches. A speech in a criminal or civil case is meant to secure a particular result, the verdict or the judgment, as the case may be; and its purpose is wholly fulfilled when that result is obtained. Here the art of rhetoric is at its highest; but it is not easy to choose forensic speeches for reproduction. Many are so full of detail which was well understood by the judge or jury to whom they were addressed that they cannot be appreciated or enjoyed by those who have not heard the evidence. Better Times written by D. Lloyd George and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-13 with Political Science categories.

Excerpt from Better Times: Speeches The speeches contained in this volume are a selection of those delivered by Mr. Lloyd George during the ten years of his political life from 1903 to 1913. Those years, whatever may be the judgment of future historians, can hardly fail to be classed among the most active and the most productive of his career. Perhaps the most obvious comment upon the speeches is that from first to last they show a marked consistency of thought and purpose. It is not merely that Mr. Lloyd George has not forsaken in office the ideals which he set before himself when he was one of the Opposition. To that negative virtue he can certainly lay a just claim. But he can claim, what is more, to have persuaded his party in the days of its triumph to put the whole of its fighting force into an effort to realise ideals which, when they had not yet become a part of the official programme of Liberalism, hadalready kindled some ofthe brightest fires of his eloquence. Some very boldcritics have suggested that the policy put forward by the Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1913 for dealing with the problem of the land was filched from the Tory plan of campaign. The most audacious partisan would not continue to put forward so preposterous a theory if he had read Mr. Lloyd George's early speeches. There is nothing to be added here to what has already been said as to Mr. Lloyd George's oratory in the preceding volumes. The reader may form his own estimate of it from the following pages. Excerpt from Modern American Speeches: Edited With Notes and Introductions Many times during his work as a teacher of English, the editor has felt that it would be desirable to present to high school pupils some speeches by American authors on subjects of our own day. He does not believe that the older classics have no message for the coming generation, nor does he believe that the later writings are too new or too poor in quality for the instruction and inspiration of our youth. If a science text-book should present the principles of the gas engine and the aeroplane, why should not a literature text offer equally modern material? Such an innovation has been made in poetry; and the effect of "Poetry of the People" on classes encourages the editor to attempt a similar innovation in prose. This book, therefore, presents four selections from authors who are living at the present time or who have died recently, on subjects of vital importance to Americans of to-day and to-morrow. Carl Schurz's "True Americanism," although the speech was delivered in 1858, nevertheless has present interest because it was far in advance of its time and foreshadowed some principles of twentieth century government. "The New South" brings now the the same appeal that Henry W. Grady carried to the North in 1886 for a better understanding of the South. Excerpt from Classified Models of Speech Composition: Ninety-Five Complete Speeches The classification used is the ancient classical grouping with such alterations as seemed to me to be demanded by modern conditions. It is the most helpful one I can make, and is used for this reason alone with no claim to perfection or finality. Of course certain of these speeches could be listed under a number of the headings used. I have put each one where I thought it fitted best, and hold the reasons for my choice either obvious or unimportant.
