Bruns, damals noch Vorsitzende des Veranstaltervereins und Redakteurin der Tageszeitung Die Welt, hatte sich mehrfach in verschiedenen Aufsätzen und Interviews über das schwierige Verhältnis zwischen Politik und Medien beklagt. "Wir Journalisten hatten den Eindruck, die Politiker inszenieren sich vor den schönen Berliner Kulissen mit ein paar kurzen Statements, aber wenn die kritischen Fragen kommen, dann schlagen sie sich schnell zu den Hinterausgängen durch und verschwinden."3 Vor allem der rasante Erfolg des Fernsehens habe dazu geführt, dass sich die Volksvertreter für das Publikum öffentlichkeitswirksam und kameragerecht in Szene setzen und dabei die politischen Inhalte verschleiern. "Es gibt kein politisches Ereignis mehr, das nicht zuallererst über das Fernsehen kommuniziert wird. Also über Bilder, und Bilder sind es auch, die maßgeblich darüber entscheiden, ob Spitzenpolitiker X oder Y beim Bürger glaub- und vertrauenswürdig ist", so Bruns.4

This volume focuses on the ways discourse is used in ritual performances as an important medium of power, enabling speakers/actors to construct, redefine and transform interpersonal relationships, cultural concepts and worldviews. The various case studies gathered here, from South Asia, South East Asia, Africa and South America, show that recent developments in linguistic anthropology, ritual theory and performance studies provide new conceptual tools to take a fresh look at these issues.
