The devastation of Hungarian Jewry was among the worst atrocities of World War II, encompassing the murder of hundreds of thousands of men, women and children in the final months of the war. Facing defeat, Hitler and his allies brought the Holocaust to Hungary with unprecedented speed and barbarity. The Hungarian Jewish population was rounded up and deported to concentration camps in just 54 days. 437,402 Jews. 148 trains. Destination: Auschwitz. The German plan for annihilation of the Jews-called the 'Final Solution'-set the goal that not a single survivor would be left to bear witness to the events. Fifty years later, Steven Spielberg established Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation to record the testimony of as many survivors as possible. From the ashes of the Holocaust these voices now emerge to share their stories and to represent the nearly six million Jews who did not survive. Survivors and liberators share what they experienced in gripping, firsthand testimony. Archival photographs document history, and powerful color images chronicle the survivors' emotional return to the places of their pasts:from homes unseen for fifty years to the ghettos and concentration camps of their imprisonment. Top scholars have been brought together to share their insights into one of humanity's darkest chapters. These elements are poignantly synthesized in The Last Days as a warning for all mankind.

This illustrated, large-format book, Testimony: The Legacy of Schindler’s List and the USC Shoah Foundation—A 20th Anniversary Commemoration combines, for the first time, the behind-the-scenes story of the making of Schindler’s List with the history of the remarkable organization inspired by that landmark film. Steven Spielberg’s encounters with Holocaust survivors who visited the set and personally told him their stories set him on a quest to collect and preserve survivor testimony for generations to come. In 1994, he established the Shoah Foundation, and in the following four years nearly 52,000 eyewitness interviews were video recorded in 56 countries and 32 languages. This commemorative book relates how the foundation accomplished this feat through a worldwide network of dedicated people, pioneering interview methods, and state-of-the art technologies. A special 140-page section tells the riveting story of the film in photos, script excerpts, and the words of the cast and crew, including Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, and Spielberg. Drawing from the Universal Pictures archives and exclusive interviews, here are details on Spielberg’s struggle to bring Oskar Schindler’s story from novel to script to screen, the casting, cinematography, and especially what happened during the difficult shoot in Poland in 1993—on locations where actual events of the Holocaust occurred. Partnered with the University of Southern California since 2006, the USC Shoah Foundation has broadened its mission and now collects and preserves testimonies from other genocides, including those in Armenia, Cambodia, and Rwanda, while expanding its educational outreach, especially to young people. Its Visual History Archive—digitized, fully searchable, and hyperlinked to the minute—has become the largest digital collection of its kind in the world. As Spielberg writes in his introduction, “I believe the work of the USC Shoah Foundation is the most important legacy of Schindler’s List.”

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Film Science, grade: 2,7, University of Freiburg, language: English, abstract: "Schindler’s List" is certainly one of the most famous works about the Holocaust that has ever been created so far. Since the 1970s the memory of the Holocaust became more and more integrated as an important element not only of Jewish Amer-ican culture but of American culture in general. The film that was published in 1994 by one of Hollywood’s most famous directors can be seen as a milestone in this process of the “Americanization of the Holocaust”. Other very successful projects preceded that aimed to preserve the memory of the Holocaust in American culture such as the TV series Holocaust or the opening of the National Memorial Museum in 1993. This process of integrating the Holocaust as an essential part in American culture is described in Peter Novick’s study The Holocaust in American Life. I will try to analyze the film as part of this process and raise several questions about its meaning in this context. I will at first examine the historical background of the time when the film was published. I will try to find out what makes Schindler’s List typical for an American Hollywood movie and how the film “Americanizes” in this way the subject of the Holocaust. Before that I will examine how the idea of Schindler’s List emerged and how it became possible that this delicate topic was chosen by Spielberg who was rather known for his spectacular entertainment movies up to this point. To answer these questions I will also analyze elementary elements of the film: suspense structure, characters, technical aspects and also shortly deal with the reception and critics of the movie. Finally I will discuss the question which impact the movie had or could have for the viewer’s perception of the Holocaust and in which way the movie shaped what Novick calls the “collective memory” of the Holocaust.

Essay from the year 2011 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: A, The University of Chicago, language: English, abstract: Steven Spielberg was born in 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was an armature film maker as he grew up moving several times and spending most of his youth in Arizona. He attended California State University Long Beach before dropping out to pursue his career in entertainment. In 1957, he gained experience as an unaccredited assistant editor in Wagon train the western classic. In 1961, he made an effort directing Battle squad which made a combination of footage of a plane on the ground, and that of World War II. In the late 1960s, he became a director for Universal and with the help of a television film, called duel in 1972; he got the opportunity to become a director. This paper will seek to analyze his life and the impact he had on culture. Discussion Steven Spielberg began his career as an amateur recording films as a child using the family camera. He started by recording family events, and then proceeded to film narratives with the camera set at different angles. He then filmed a movie at around twelve years of age using a script and cast of actors. At sixteen, he managed to film a science fiction movie titled firelight which was more than two hours long. In one night of showing the film, it earned $100 more than it had cost to produce (Film makers para 3). Later on, Spielberg produced a twenty four minute movie entitled Amblin which led to Universal signing him up as the youngest director on a long term deal. The movie won many festival awards leading to the signing of a contract of seven years under the television division. It is then that he directed "duel" which was well received and released to the theatres (Film makers para 5).

The Fifth Diamond By: Irene Zisblatt “Irene Zisblatt eloquently speaks and inspires today’s generation with her story of remembrance and survival” -Steven Spielberg This is the story of Irene Zisblatt, Auschwitz and after. Her autobiography moves us from Hungary through her terrifying coming-of-age as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps and her life in America. It’s a story of compassion and hope between two girls whose bizarre fates brought together, whose love for each other inspired their survival, and whose friendship tragically ended in the forests of Germany. The lack of bitterness with which Irene tells her experience, along with her straightforward style, adds power to what is essentially a triumph of the human spirit. Faced with the dehumanizing ordeal of life in Auschwitz-Birkenau , she found that by believing strongly that her horrors were temporary, she could cling to the hope that she could survive and be human again. It has taken Mrs. Zisblatt 50 years to be able to recount the terror of her experience. We should be grateful for her courage to relive these events in order to write this book. Irene is grateful to this country for giving her the opportunity to begin life anew. She is not embittered or filled with hatred and it is her goal to educate children in order to rid the world of intolerance, prejudiced and indifference.
