This richly illustrated book explores the fascinating and ubiquitous occurrence of spirals and vortices in human culture and in nature. Spiral forms have been used as elements in the arts for thousands of years, whereas their role in nature and science - from DNA and sea shells to galaxies - is still a topic of investigation in numerous fields. Following an introduction to the cultural history of spiral forms, the book presents contributions from leading experts, who describe the origins, mechanisms and dynamics of spirals and vortices in their special fields. As a whole the book provides a valuable source of information, while also taking the reader on an aesthetic and scientific journey through the world of spiral forms.

This book can be looked upon in more ways than one. On the one hand, it describes strikingly interesting and lucid hydrodynamic experiments done in the style of the "good old days" when the physicist needed little more than a piece of string and some sealing wax. On the other hand, it demonstrates how a profound physical analogy can help to get a synoptic view on a broad range of nonlinear phenomena involving self-organization of vortical structures in planetary atmo spheres and oceans, in galaxies and in plasmas. In particular, this approach has elucidated the nature and the mechanism of such grand phenomena as the Great of galaxies. A number of our Red Spot vortex on Jupiter and the spiral arms predictions concerning the dynamics of spiral galaxies are now being confirmed by astronomical observations stimulated by our experiments. This book is based on the material most of which was accumulated during 1981-88 in close cooperation with our colleagues, experimenters from the Plasma Physics Department of the Kurchatov Atomic Energy Institute (S. V. Antipov, A. S. Trubnikov, AYu. Rylov, AV. Khutoretsky) and astrophysics theoreticians from the Astronomical Council of the USSR Academy of Sciences (AM. Frid man) and from the Volgograd State University (AG. Morozov). To all of them we wish to express our gratitude. Whenever we speak of "our experiments", the participation of the entire team is implied.

Patterns are everywhere in the world around us, from the spirals of a seashell to the branching of a tree. But what are patterns, and why are they so important? In this fascinating book, we will explore the world of patterns, from the simple to the complex, from the natural to the man-made. We will discover how patterns can be used to create beauty, explain the natural world, and even understand the mysteries of our own consciousness. We will begin our journey with the concept of the gnomon, a simple geometric shape that can be used to create an infinite variety of patterns. We will then explore the golden ratio and the Fibonacci sequence, two mathematical patterns that are found throughout nature and art. Next, we will turn our attention to fractals, self-similar patterns that can be found in everything from clouds to coastlines. We will also explore spirals and vortices, two types of patterns that are often associated with chaos and complexity. Finally, we will conclude our journey with a discussion of emergence and self-organization, two processes that can give rise to complex patterns from simple beginnings. Along the way, we will see how patterns are essential to our understanding of the world. They are the key to unlocking the secrets of nature and the mysteries of our own consciousness. **The Spiral of Creation** is an essential read for anyone who wants to understand the world around them. It is a book that will change the way you see the world. If you like this book, write a review on google books!

The Magician S Workbook written by Donald Tyson and has been published by Llewellyn Worldwide this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Body, Mind & Spirit categories.

Contains everything that beginners need to start their esoteric training The Magician's Workbook has a single purpose: to present a graded and integrated series of practical exercises designed to teach the essentials of ritual magic. It contains no history or theory-just forty exercises that anyone can do without prior training, special tools, or costly materials. The content ranges from simple mental exercises to complete rituals that form templates for future work in Western magic. These exercises do not merely teach-they transform. When practiced regularly, they cause changes in the body, brain, perceptions, emotions, and the will-changes necessary for the successful working of magic in any of its ancient or modern traditions. A complete basic training manual for serious beginners who want to start performing ritual magic, rather than just reading about it Presents a progressive, forty-week schedule of daily study that fully integrates inner mental conditioning with external movements, gestures, and words Enables students to go on to study the Golden Dawn system in greater depth, or move forward with confidence to any other form of Western magic

Vorticity And Vortex Dynamics written by Jie-Zhi Wu and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04-20 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book is a comprehensive and intensive monograph for scientists, engineers and applied mathematicians, as well as graduate students in fluid dynamics. It starts with a brief review of fundamentals of fluid dynamics, with an innovative emphasis on the intrinsic orthogonal decomposition of fluid dynamic process, by which one naturally identifies the content and scope of vorticity and vortex dynamics. This is followed by a detailed presentation of vorticity dynamics as the basis of later development. In vortex dynamics part the book deals with the formation, motion, interaction, stability, and breakdown of various vortices. Typical vortex structures are analyzed in laminar, transitional, and turbulent flows, including stratified and rotational fluids. Physical understanding of vertical flow phenomena and mechanisms is the first priority throughout the book. To make the book self-contained, some mathematical background is briefly presented in the main text, but major prerequisites are systematically given in appendices. Material usually not seen in books on vortex dynamics is included, such as geophysical vortex dynamics, aerodynamic vortical flow diagnostics and management.

Vortices In Nonlinear Fields written by Len M. Pismen and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Mathematics categories.

Although natural phenomena can be described by a few simple and symmetric basic laws they exhibit an astounding variety of behaviours. This can be explained by a process known as symmetry breaking, which can cause an ordered state to form with topological defects. The dynamics of further evolution are determined to a large extent by the dynamics of such defects. This book covers the structure and dynamics of vortices in a variety of nonlinear field models with spontaneously broken symmetry. Point vortices or vortex lines can correspond, depending on the physical setting, to quantized vortices in superfluids or superconductors, dislocations in non- equilibrium patterns, rotating spiral waves, disclinations in liquid crystals, singularities in optical fields or strings in relativistic field theories. This book is unique in considering vortices in these different settings, but also emphasizes the analytical methods that allow an understanding of the common theoretical structure underlying defect dynamics.

Singularities And Groups In Bifurcation Theory written by Martin Golubitsky and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Mathematics categories.

Bifurcation theory studies how the structure of solutions to equations changes as parameters are varied. The nature of these changes depends both on the number of parameters and on the symmetries of the equations. Volume I discusses how singularity-theoretic techniques aid the understanding of transitions in multiparameter systems. This volume focuses on bifurcation problems with symmetry and shows how group-theoretic techniques aid the understanding of transitions in symmetric systems. Four broad topics are covered: group theory and steady-state bifurcation, equicariant singularity theory, Hopf bifurcation with symmetry, and mode interactions. The opening chapter provides an introduction to these subjects and motivates the study of systems with symmetry. Detailed case studies illustrate how group-theoretic methods can be used to analyze specific problems arising in applications.
